Affliction: Day of Reckoning Results & Recap

Affliction’s 2nd pay-per-view event did not disappoint. The main card presented all aspects of MMA and included exciting finishes. The production was well done and crisp. The biggest room for improvement was the ring side announcers. I doubt anyone would describe Tito Ortiz as having a firm grasp on the English language yet he was even worse than anticipated. Tito stumbled through the commentary and appeared lost and unprepared in his post fight interviews. The good news is Tito will likely be competing in the near future leaving the interviews to a more seasoned veteran. In the end, for some unknown reason, Chuck Zito and Scott Ferrall gave their opinions on the Fedor/Arlovski fight. There is no way to describe these “gentlemen” in a column that is somewhat family oriented so I will sum each of them up with this: clueless, distasteful.

On to the Affliction card:

  • Dan Lauzon defeated Horodecki fill-in Bobby Green. Green performed well with consideration he took the fight on short notice. The fight was filled with “low blows” by Green. The momentum and flow was often stopped. In the end, Lauzon wins by submission via choke.
  • Paul Buentello took out Kiril Sidellnikov via referee stoppage in the 3rd round. Buentello’s hand speed, pin point accuracy, and reach outclassed “Baby Fedor.” Kiril proved his has a very strong chin but has a long way to go to compete against the world’s best.
  • Babalu vs. Sokoudjou was an interesting match in terms of styles. Looking at the fighters, the novice fan would certainly pick Sokoudjou to win due to his impressive physique and intimidating appearance. In the end, Babalu’s ground game was far better than Sokoudjou’s resulting in a submission win via choke.
  • Matt “The Law” Lindland (see Lindland interview) was stunned via the quick striking ability of Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort only 37 seconds into the 1st round. It took several minutes for doctors to get Lindland to his feet. Lindland, showing the pride and heart of a champion, refused to leave via stretcher. Belfort looks like a different fighter competing at 185lbs as opposed to 205lbs. He is even quicker, if that’s possible, and looks much more fluid carrying less muscle. This time around, “The Phenom” may be here to stay.
  • Josh Barnett controlled all three rounds versus a game Gilbert Yvel. Barnett took the fight to the ground attempting submissions and dropping punishing elbows. Yvel showed tremendous heart taking vicious blows and managed to escape several submissions only to lose via a majority decision.

AFFLICTION MAIN EVENT:

Defending Champion and #1 fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko placed his title on the line vs. Andrei “The Pit Bull” Arlovski. The capacity crowd was loud and in awe as Fedor made his calm walk to the ring.

As the fight starts, the size difference and muscularity are noticeable as Andrei looks physically superior to Fedor. Arlovski controls the early part of the first rounds by connecting with quick straight punches. The schooling by legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach is evident. As the pace quickens, “The Pit Bull” connects with a forceful straight kick which pushes Fedor back. At this point in the fight, Arlovski is controlling the fight. He rushes Fedor and attempts a flying knee; Fedor connects with a wicked right cross that levels Andrei and leaves him laying face down, helpless on the mat. MMA icon, referee “Big John” McCarthy quickly stops the fight.

Fedor, yet again, proves why he is the best fighter in the world and of all time. Forget all of the pundits who rate Anderson Silva as the best pound for pound fighter in the world; they are living in a biased dream world. As The Triangle Choke pointed out in a column last year, Fedor is clearly the best the sport has ever seen.

What’s next for Affliction? Most likely a title match between Fedor and Josh Barnett and an appearance by a motivated Tito Ortiz. Affliction will no doubt prove to be a viable challenger to UFC’s seat at the top of the MMA world.
