Megumi Fujii vs. Lisa WardBellator’s 115-pound women’s tournament continues with a semifinal matchup between Megumi “Mega Megu” Fujii (21-0) and Lisa Ward (14-5). It will be part of the Fox Sports Net-televised main card portion of the event. Fujii, 36, is a Tokyo, Japan-based veteran who fights out of the Abe Ani Combat Club. She began fighting as a professional in 2004 earning victories with notable promotions such as Smackgirl, Hook-n-Shoot, Shooto, and Bodog Fight. After nineteen straight victories, she signed on with the Bellator promotion and defeated Sarah Schneider via TKO at Bellator 21 in her June debut. In the promotion’s opening round match-up this August, she defeated Carla Esparza via submission at Bellator 24. Ward, 27, is a Washington-based submission specialist who fights out of the United Training Center in Olympia. Turning pro in 2004, she went on to win nine of her first eleven bouts while competing for organizations like Hook-n-Shoot, Smackgirl, and Valor Fighting. Her career hit a roadblock after losing three of her next six including an opportunity to become the DEEP women’s lightweight champion in June 2009. She has posted back-to-back victories since joining the Bellator roster, first taking care of Stephanie Frausto at the June Bellator 22 event and then defeating Aisling Daly via unanimous decision in her women’s tournament opening round bout at Bellator 26 in August. Prediction – Fujii submission
Jessica Aguilar vs. Zoila FraustoThe second women’s tournament semifinal bout will include American Top Team’s Jessica “Jag” Aguilar (9-3) taking on Team Jorge Gurgel’s Zoila “Warrior Princess” Frausto (8-1) at the Bellator 31 event. This bout will be included on the FSN portion of the event. Aguilar, 28, is a Houston, Texas-based mixed martial artist whose strength is her stand up striking. “Jag” began fighting as a professional in 2006 and won five of her first eight bouts competing in promotions like Absolute FC, Combat FC, and Bodog Fight. She turned it up a notch in late-2009 and won her first of her current four-fight winning streak. She defeated Lynn Alvarez via submission in the Bellator 24 opening round tournament bout last month. Frausto is a Madera, California based fighter who is known mostly for her flashy technique and endless stamina. She began fighting as a pro in early-2009 and won her first five bouts competing for promotions like Tachi Palace Fights and Sho MMA. Her only career loss came in March at Sho MMA 7 via Miesha Tate submission. “Warrior Princess” has posted three consecutive victories including back-to-back bouts for the Bellator organization. Her Bellator debut in June was successful after she earned a KO over Rosi Sexton; she followed that up with a unanimous decision victory over Jessica Pene at Bellator 25 in the opening round tournament bout last month. Prediction – Frausto decision
Yoshiyuki Yoshida vs. Chris LozanoFormer UFC welterweight Yoshiyuki “Zenko” Yoshida (11-5) will fight for the first time since being released from the organization taking on undefeated Chris “The Assassin” Lozano (5-0) in a Bellator 31 main card bout contested at 170-pounds. Yoshida, 36, is a judo specialist who splits his training between Tokyo Yellow Mans and Jackson’s Submission Fighting. He turned pro in 2005 and won eight in a row while fighting for three different Japanese promotions. His eight straight victories earned him a contract with the UFC, where he got off to a great start winning two of his first three inside the octagon. After wins over Jon Koppenhaver and Brandon Wolff, Yoshida lost bouts at UFC 104 and UFC 113 to earn his release from the organization. Lozano is an Ohio-native who fights out of the Strong Style Fight Team. “The Assassin” turned pro in June 2009 and won via 1st round KO in all of his first four bouts. Three of his first four pro bouts came in the Ohio-based NAAFS organization. After earning his fourth victory in Oklahoma for Freestyle Cage Fighting, Lozano defeated former UFC lightweight Jason Dent via 4th round TKO in yet another NAAFS bout this past June. Prediction – Lozano TKO
