Last Thursday, April 8th, Bellator began its second season with a Fox Sports Net live broadcast from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. The night’s features included two lightweight quarterfinal bouts as well as two featherweight quarterfinal bouts. The new season of Bellator lived up to a major promotion push with two hours full of action-packed fights. In the night’s first televised fight, a featherweight quarterfinal bout, Armenian George Karakhanyan weathered an early storm from his opponent, Bao Quach, and connected with some high leg kicks before finishing him off with a brutal knee to the face. The 1st round (4:05) TKO finish by Karakhanyan advances him into the semi-final round at a later date. The second featherweight quarterfinal bout featured former DREAM competitor and NCAA All-American Joe Warren and Eric Marriott. Warren was the aggressor for most of the fight, using a takedown and brutal ground and pound to grind out a unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) victory. Marriott didn’t give up on the fight, almost catching Warren, first with an armbar and then again with a triangle choke. Warren had help from the bell and survived to advance into the semi-final round of their featherweight tournament. The featured bout that brought out a star-studded crowd was former UFC lightweight contender, Roger Huerta, and Cincinnati native Chad Hinton in a lightweight quarterfinal bout. Hinton was competitive, especially in the 1st round, but after the fight was taken to the canvas it turned to Huerta’s favor for good. Huerta used a series of ground-and-pound strikes and hammer fists until round 3 when he transitioned into a fight-ending knee bar submission (0:56). Huerta becomes an early favorite when he advances on into the lightweight tournament semi-final round. The night’s final televised bout was between American wrestling prospect, Carey Vanier, and Guam native Joe Duarte in a lightweight quarterfinal bout. Vanier overwhelmed Duarte and finished him via TKO at 4:14 of round 3. Vanier used a mixture of old-fashioned wrestling and solid striking to gain advantage from Duarte. Vanier makes a statement as a surprise legit contender in the very competitive lightweight tournament by advancing into the semi-final round.
