Bellator Fighting Championships burst onto the scene in 2009 with the first major United States-based MMA tournaments since the early days of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Over the course of twelve events in as many weeks, Bellator crowned four champions spanning the featherweight (145lbs), lightweight (155lbs), welterweight (170lbs), and middleweight (185lbs) divisions with each of its events airing live on ESPN Deportes.

Although the latter half of 2009 was a quiet time for Bellator as they geared up for Seasons 2 and 3 in 2010, the first few months of the new year have been abuzz with almost daily announcements from the Bellator PR department announcing everything from new, high-profile tournament participants such as UFC fan favorite Roger Huerta, 2008 U.S. Olympian Ben Askren, and fast-rising welterweight Dan Hornbuckle, to fight venues and tournament brackets.

Season 2 of Bellator Fighting Championships is set to kick off with Bellator 13 this Thursday night, April 8, from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, with the entire main card—all tournament bouts—airing live on Fox Sportsnet and its affiliate stations with special preview and highlight shows running throughout the week on Spanish-language Telemundo as well as on NBC. The tournaments, again made up of the four weight classes from Season 1, consists of eight fighters each, with the winner—crowned in the closing round of the tournament this June, guaranteed a shot at the defending tournament champions from Season 1 sometime this Fall.

Although some fans has issues with the overall production values of Bellator Season 1, Season 2 looks to be shaping up into a quality MMA product right up with the likes of Strikeforce and the UFC, and although Bellator has yet to grow the talent necessary to go head-to-head with the MMA juggernauts of the world, their tournament-style setup—a favorite among hardcore fans—as well as charismatic and promising returning champions and current tournament participants figures to make them a mainstay in one of the most competitive sports markets in the world.

Be sure to stay with ProFighting-fans.com throughout the Bellator Season 2 MMA tournament for unrivaled coverage during and between each event.
