Roy Jones vs Omar Sheika Preview & Prediction

Roy Jones is continuing to stay active in this final act of his boxing career. After suffering a loss to undefeated Joe Calzaghe, and getting busted up in the process, Jones is looking to rebound against journeyman Omar Sheika on Saturday, March 21, 2009. The once promising contender lost every step up in class he had after squeaking out a decision over Glen Johnson in 2000. He hasn’t fought for nearly a year and a half.

Does the former pound for pound champion have enough in the tank to take out a hungry opponent? And does he have a possible return to greatness left in him at this stage in his career?

Roy Jones
52 (38) – 5
Last 5 fights: 3-2 dating back three and a half years

Omar Sheika
27 (18) - 8
Last 5 fights: 3-2 dating back four and a half years

Of course, Roy Jones has worlds of experience that Sheika could never dream of. He outclasses Sheika in every physical and mental category as well. And even at his advanced age and with his diminished capabilities, he has been the more active man in recent years.

If this fight had happened five years ago, it would have been a brutal demolition that would have lasted as long as Jones decided he would extend it. Jones no longer has that kind of dominating ability in him. However, he still does possess far superior speed, boxing ability and power.

There is the outside shot that Sheika could manage to catch Jones off guard and land something huge. However, the chances of that happening – while greater than they were at any other point in Jones’s career - are infinitesimally small.

Credit to Jones for staying active and looking to keep himself in the ring. He clearly has the heart of a champion, and is trying to find a way to get himself back into title contention. A win here wouldn’t deserve any accolades, however, it would keep his name attractive enough for another champion to meet Roy in the ring. It must be hard for Jones to swallow, fighting on a B or C level circuit.

Maybe he has enough magic left to turn out a spectacular stoppage. More likely, Jones cruises to an easy although uninspiring unanimous decision, while showing occasional flashes of his old brilliance against a game but terribly overmatched opponent.
