Mayweather Injured; Marquez Fight PostponedMayweather's comeback postponed due to injury
It has just been reported by the camp of Floyd Mayweather Jr. that he has suffered a rib injury during training and will have to postpone his fight with lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez, originally scheduled for July 18. As of now, the plan is to reschedule the fight as soon as possible and not to cancel the fight entirely or to have either man move onto another opponent. However, more details have not yet been released regarding the changes to the fight schedule.
This is off the heels of the Cotto vs. Clottey fight which just aired on HBO, during which heavy advertisements were made for the pending Mayweather-Marquez 24/7 series and the fight itself. It also comes less than two weeks after the big Wladimir Klitschko vs. David Haye heavyweight title fight was nixed due to an injury suffered by Haye. That leaves the two largest fights of the summer for boxing cancelled. Klitschko found a great last minute replacement in Ruslan Chagaev, the number 3 rated heavyweight by Pro Fighting Fans. But as mentioned, little is known yet as to how the Mayweather vs. Marquez fight postponement will be handled. Already rumors are circulating around the Internet that Mayweather had a last minute change of heart, after hearing (unjust) criticisms about the match up. However, that is an unlikely situation as Mayweather, however disingenuous he may be in the promotion of a fight, takes his craft entirely too seriously to even attempt to pull something like that off. More likely is that Mayweather, coming off of an 18 month absence from the sport since his defeat of Ricky Hatton, is learning the hard way that an athlete's body – particularly a fighter's body – cannot be turned on and off at will. Mayweather is a fighter who had been remarkably injury free during his career except for problems with his hands.
His intense training after the longest he's been away from boxing since he was a small child was surely the cause of the injury for Mayweather, and the postponement of the Mayweather vs. Marquez clash. Stay tuned for more updates on the postponement of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight.
