UFC 121: Brock Lesnar - “Bring the Pain”Brock Lesnar will to face Cain Velasquez with the UFC Heavyweight title on the line at UFC 121 on October 23
At UFC 121, UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar will try and defend his title belt for a third time against rising contender Cain Velasquez, in what looks like the biggest fight in the heavyweight division. Each time Lesnar is given a new challenge, the tests seem to get tougher. Over three months ago, Shane Carwin landed some heavy shots and put Lesnar on his heels before fighting back to submit a fatigued opponent. Velasquez has to be viewed as a step up in competition, he adds much more speed, agility as well as conditioning, however he still has to be able to put the finishing touches on Lesnar, who by the way continues to improve as well.
When this title fight begins, both fighters will be weary of their opponents’ power. I can’t picture either fighter wanting to exchange with the other, at least right off the bell. This, I believe, is where Velasquez will be the most dangerous. If he does land a big one at this stage, he may have Lesnar on his skates and backpedaling once again. Lesnar on the other hand, will be looking to get his limbs around Velasquez and put him on his back. If that is the case, Velasquez will be at a huge disadvantage. No matter who the UFC puts in front of Lesnar, they will not be able to overpower the champion. That helps him in more ways than one. Lesnar can use his clinch game to utilize elbows and knees to damage Velasquez in the championship rounds. On the floor, Velasquez has never had someone the size of Lesnar on top of him, so chalk the ground advantage up for Lesnar. There is no doubt Velasquez is the best heavyweight not named Lesnar, but is he ready to carry the title belt with the confidence of a Brock Lesnar, I’m not sure. He has all that it takes to someday become a champion, however Lesnar also has it, and he may not be ready to give it up just yet.
Wherever you visualize this fight taking place, it has to favor Lesnar. The mental edge is included; Lesnar is even more confident now that he has fought back from near defeat and successfully defended his title. The comparisons are fairly even but what we already know about Lesnar is still an unknown for Velasquez. I’ll go with the known talent of the champion, no matter how much the revolving door of contenders continues to move.
