A Fan's View from his Couch: UFC 94 Recap

Finch vs. Gono

If John Finch is the terminator I guess Akihiro Gono is a scared John Connor. With that said, I told you that Finch was going to dominate Gono, the official scorecards read: 30-27, 30-27 and 30-26 all in the favor of one Mr. John Finch. Dana sorry to say, but Finch won the pissing contest and you will have to give him another fight with a top contender on the main card soon enough. I’d love to see Finch v Koscheck, but unless one of them leaves AKA it won’t happen. Making the next best fight for Finch an octagon battle v Parisyan, after his win albeit indecisively over Kim, making UFC 94 their own mini tournament.

Guida vs. Diaz

Clay Guida should run marathons, triathlons, hell, the Iron Man in Hawaii; on the other hand when Nate Diaz is done with MMA he will undoubtedly run a very successful jujitsu gym, and when the 15 minutes was up, all I thought was wow it was a pretty boring fight…..to the average fan. Not this one, I actually saw a lot of action, two men trying to instill their will on one another; 15 minutes full of reversals and top-bottom fun and frivolity. I sat there just waiting for Guida to make a mistake and for Diaz to capitalize, it never happened. Nate picked him apart with his reach, 84 inches and an 8 inch reach advantage in the 3 rd, but it wasn’t enough to capitalize on the calm, cool, and collected “Carpenter.” In the end I hate to agree with a split decision (see any other post I have written) but this was a very close battle I would have given to Guida as well. Here come Clay, maybe the Diego v Stevenson winner. As for Diaz, he is still right there in the UFC lightweight top 10.

Machida vs. Silva

WOW, REALLY, SERIOUSLY, all words that I said aloud at the end of the fight. Doctors tell you its going to be quick and painless, for Silva it was quick and painful!

Guess I have to eat my words and give the karate practitioner his due. Lyoto not only deserves his shot at Sugar Rashad, but will most definitely get it. “Whenever, wherever, whoever” he said it and I have to agree, whoever that title holder is DON’T chase him, he will knock you out!

Penn vs. St. Pierre

Blood is thicker than water and in this fight BJ’s brother did probably the best thing he could have done for his little brother Baby Jay by stopping this one early. On that note, GSP is a man, I don’t throw around the word “greatest” too much because I believe it is way over used, but we may be seeing the greatest mixed martial artists ever. What a great way to celebrate the passing of the man who started this all in Helio Gracie. GSP you have my up most respect and so does Penn. Both of these men will dominate their natural weights for a long time to come!
