A Fan's View from his Couch: UFC 98 Recap

Rashad Evans vs. Lyoto Machida
The Dragon is the Slayer....Just as I predicted Rashad's title run lasted exactly zero fights and his over-punching, flaying strikes finally caught up to him when he fought a MMA practitioner who has patience and counter strikes with the patience and fury of a starving wolverine.  This fight was never really in doubt from the opening bell to the devastating knockout as Machida, the boring counter puncher who has now finished back-to-back undefeated strikers with heart-stopping knockouts, controlled the action and owned the overzealous Evans. Machida showed that he may have what it takes to rule the deepest division in the fight game for more than one fight like it's last two champions.  Up next for Lyoto, well I hope it's Rampage. For Evans, he shouldn't fall to far as I see Shogun in his future.

Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra

This fight gave both men what they wanted and that was a chance to tee off on one another for 15 minutes and go back to their very different homes and brag to their friends about how hard they hit the other.  However, one man gets to brag a little bit more as Hughes has for all practical purposes relegated Serra to the under card or UFC Fight Nights for the rest of what should be a short end to his career.  The "one trick pony" as Serra irrationally called the 9 time champion showed that Serra is nothing more than a "one hit wonder" and as far as this fight fan is concerned this fight should move the velvet rope over and usher Hughes right into his rightful place in the UFC's Hall of Fame. If he so chooses to stay one more fight, hopefully he will do so against Koscheck and show us the old guard vs. the new guard as far as wrestling is concerned at 170 lbs.

As for the rest of the card....how about 60 percent of the fights ending early and giving Dana a plethora of options when it comes to "Fight of the Night," "Knockout of the Night" and "Submission of the Night."  As I said in my preview, it is often the fights or fight cards that are overlooked which give us the most eye bulging results!
