UFC 129: GSP-Cyberdyne Systems Model Q-1000
While GSP has a huge following, the Quebec fighter is not without detractors, even in his home country, but more so in English-speaking Canada. Criticisms focus primarily around two things: 1) men getting pissed that their girlfriend/ wife begins to breathe heavily when GSP appears in his Under Armour shorts 2) GSP’s fights usually go the distance. Dealing with the first issue is a little touchy. What I do is fire back 6 or 7 shots of Cabo Wabo so when I look in the mirror I see GSP’s body with my head. But that may not work with everyone. Boys, if you get jealous, just remember the fifteen women you gawked at earlier in the day and stuff it down.
Even though GSP’s popularity is high outside Quebec, his status at home is that of legitimate superstar. Quebec is an island of predominantly French speakers and French culture. In order to thrive their citizens need to support achievers. And they do. Painters, writers, speed skaters and MMA athletes alike are feted in that province in a way that is foreign to the rest of Canada, where many English-speaking artists and athletes are snubbed in a form of self-deprecation. Quebec, a province with a population of only around 8 million, is able to create millionaire superstars, an admirable feat. The other beef some have with GSP (his lack of killer instinct) has been most noticeable after the champion’s KO loss to Sera, considered by many to be the greatest upset in MMA history. This understandably put GSP in safety mode. However, MMA is entertainment, and the decision to not gamble much has taken its toll on some fan’s patience.
Despite being MMA's most rounded fighter, GSP showed in his match against Dan Hardy an inability to submit a fighter not known for his ground game and, in spite of his stellar stand up technique, evident in crushing Koscheck’s orbital bone with his jab, he has lacked KO power. GSP isn't perfect. He is constantly evolving, though, and brings aspects to training that makes him a truly unique fighter: gymnastics, Olympic-style snatch lifting, and training with world class wrestlers and boxers. Likely the only realistic improvement GSP could make is to add some degree of KO power to his strikes, which according to him on Primetime he is attempting to do. More KO power will stifle the recent criticism and bring any naysayers online. Considering his incredible technique and second-to-none jab, More KOs would just about make the French Canadian as dangerous a fighter as could be conceived without a Cyberdyne Systems Model T-1000 endoskeleton.
