Jon "Bones" Jones - "He's Too Good"
Back in the mid-eighties I travelled from my home in Saskatoon to Chicago and, while there, took in a Bulls game. I was a white face is a sea of black, a new experience for a young Canadian Prairie man.
“Who’s that player who seems to float?” “That’s the rookie, Michael Jordan,” he answered. “He’s going to bring us a championship.” That’s what I think of when I see Jon ‘Bones’ Jones. Bones is just that gifted, has that much potential. Shogun thinks so too. When asked about Bones he replied, “He’s too good.” Shogun would know. Athletes talk about flow, how years of training slows the field of play, and action becomes unconscious. Bones demonstrates this as being his greatest gift by absorbing rare, strange and odd maneuvers and implementing them effectively and with precision, confounding his opponents. Consider this: Couture could not take down Brandon Vera, but Bones did easily and with devastating consequences. The buzz now, which Bones expressed openly, is that he needs top contender opponents, not tin cans. He needs to be fighting Griffin, Evans, Machida or Rampage, and eventually Shogun and Anderson Silva. I’m not saying he should have a title shot in his next fight or two. I’m saying he should have one by his third upcoming fight at the latest.
As physically gifted as he is, Bones’ greatest asset is his mind. After his DQ loss to Hamill, Bones was asked if he was disappointed. He responded by saying no, that he and his family had their health and that he was doing the job that he loved. Great champions in MMA, in any sport, seem to have that respectful, grateful attitude, and an ability to move on from adversity. Ask any NFL Defensive Back how long he can hold a garbage call in his head while the Quarterback parks himself behind the center. And if that’s not proof of his potential, his nickname ‘Bones’ is. It’s as apt for Jon Jones as “Air” was for Michael Jordan. Other fighters have looked like eventual belt holders but didn’t pan out – Brandon Vera again. Yes, tests remain for Jon ‘Bones’ Jones. I don’t have a crystal ball, and strange things happen in this sport, but I’ll tell you that you’re daft to bet against him cleaning clock and getting the UFC Light Heavyweight belt.
