WEC 48: Jose Aldo - “No Way Jose”Jose Aldo to face WEC fan-favorite Urijah Faber in WEC 48's main event
Jose Aldo is the reigning champion of WEC’s featherweight division. Near the top of every MMA pundit’s pound-for-pound list, Aldo has rightfully earned comparison to pre-UFC 112 middleweight Anderson Silva. He defends his belt this Saturday versus “The California Kid” Urijah Faber.
23-year-old Jose Aldo lacks a nickname – when I was a kid, “no way Jose” was a way to say, “it’s not happening.” Maybe a fitting nickname for the 16-1-0 fighter is “No-Way” Jose. As in, there doesn’t seem to be a way to beat him. With an early string of victories in Brazil and England (losing only once in 17 professional bouts - by submission to Luciano Azevedo), Aldo graduated to the WEC. Jose Aldo climbed effortlessly to title contention with dramatic victories over featherweight veterans Cub Swanson and Alexandre Nogueira. He's on a nine fight win streak which he's been coasting since May 2006. Aldo has a black belt from the elite Brazilian Jiu Jitsu camp Nova Uniao, but he doesn't let that stop him: no one can get past his Muay Thai. Six straight TKO victories punctuate his record, with three garnering fight of the night bonuses - and an unforgettable flying knee KO of Cub Swanson in eight seconds at WEC 41. Can any other MMA champ boast that many Fight of the Night honors? With fists like depleted uranium and a feral will to finish, Jose Aldo is currently poised to defend the belt against stalwart WEC featherweight Urijah Faber at WEC 48 on Faber’s home turf of Sacramento, California - and Faber in Sacramento is like Brett Favre in…well, you get the point. In case you forgot, Aldo wrested the belt from Mike Brown at WEC 44. Not to mention, Brown himself already dispatched Faber twice. Although Brown’s dominance over Faber has no direct bearing on the upcoming title fight, Aldo has surely taken notes.
Whatever happens, do not miss the calculating Brazilian with the laser-guided fists defend his belt this Saturday, April 24, on WEC’s first PPV.
