DREAM 11 is set for October 6, 2009 at the Yokohama Arena in Kanagawa, Japan and will be broadcast in North America on HDNet. The DREAM 11 preview & predictions have been posted for the October 6 DREAM event here at ProFighting-fans.com!

There were two new champions crowned on Tuesday at DREAM 11 in Yokohama, Japan. Shinya Aoki, the new lightweight champ, lulled former champ, Joachim Hansen to sleep with his patient grappling skills before converting on a second armbar attempt with only 4 seconds remaining in the fight. Bibiano Fernandes surprised tournament favorite, Joe Warren with a controversial armbar submission in the semis. He then outpointed Hiroyuki Takaya to earn a tight split decision victory and the featherweight grand prix crown.

Bob Sapp vs. Sokoudjou – Superhulk Semifinal

The popular Sapp (10-6-1), who was replacing an injured Mousasi, looked determined to stop his losing streak early with a flurry of punches, however Sokoudjou (7-4) survived the flurry and worked Sapp to the canvas, where he unleashed his ground and pound until the referee stopped the fight, awarding “The African Assassin” the TKO victory at 1:31 of the 1st round.

“The Beast” continues his slide, falling for the third time in his last four bouts. Similar to his most recent bout against former WWE wrestler Bobby Lashley, Sapp looked slow and helpless against the quicker opponent. Sokoudjou did what he had to do to advance into the tournament final. He will need to be on top of his game when he meets fan-favorite Minowaman for the Superhulk title.

Minowaman vs. Hong Man Choi – Superhulk Semifinal

Minowa (43-30-8) looked to be up against it early in his semifinal bout against 7’2” Hong Man Choi (2-3). Other than some knees to the body, Minowa had easily lost the first ten minutes, as Choi repeatedly caught him with several long armed strikes. However in the 2nd round, Minowa worked on Choi’s leg for close to a minute before converting on a heel hook submission at 1:27.

Minowa, a winner in three of his last four, advances to face Sokoudjou in the finals on New Year’s Eve. As usual, the Japanese crowd loved the performance that Minowaman put on in the cage and after the fight, leading the audience with his trademark cheer. Choi, a regular in K-1 Kickboxing, will probably revert back to K-1 rules and stick to one MMA fight per year.

Kazuyuki Miyata vs. Daiki Hata – Featherweight GP Reserve

Kazuyuki Miyata (8-7) controlled every aspect of the first round, landing uppercuts, hooks and jabs to Daiki Hata’s (11-6-3) face and body. As the fight grew into the 2nd frame, Miyata continued his onslaught by converting on takedown after takedown and pinning Taiki on his back for much of the bout. Miyata survived a late guillotine choke to have his name called on all three judges’ scorecards, winning the unanimous decision and a possible spot in the featherweight grand prix.

Miyata, who has won three straight featherweight bouts, is the reserve option in case of an injury for the featherweight grand prix. “DJ Taiki,” a winner in his three previous bouts, is no longer in the running for the featherweight grand prix title.

Bibiano Fernandes vs. Hiroyuki Takaya – Featherweight Grand Prix Final

After Bibiano Fernandes got by American Joe Warren and former WEC competitor, Hiroyuki Takaya knocked out Hideo Tokoro, the featherweight grand prix final was set. Fernandes flirted with a fight ending submission early in the fight only to find a game Takaya still wanting to stand and trade at a frantic pace. After a Takaya right hand opened up a cut above “The Flash’s” eye, he decided to pick the pace up even more. As the 2nd round came to a conclusion, both fighters were left pleasing the crowd with their striking display.

Fernandes was awarded the split decision victory over a disappointed Takaya. The win was his fourth straight of the tournament and sixth overall. Takaya loses for the first time since appearing in the WEC in December of 2008.
