DREAM 12 took place on October 25, 2009 in Osaka, Japan and wase broadcast in North America on HDNet. Be sure to check out the DREAM 12 predictions & preview and our recap below from ProFighting-fans.com and for the full DREAM 12 results scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Tomoya Miyashita vs. Keisuke Fujiwara

Judo practitioner Tomoya Miyashita (13-5-6) was dominant in his three round unanimous decision victory over fellow Japanese featherweight Keisuke Fujiwara (7-2-3) in the opening bout at Dream 12. Miyashita easily converted takedown after takedown then covered Fujiwara like a blanket all the while delivering elbows, punches and knees from side and front mount. Fujiwara attempted several different submissions, however never really threatened Miyashita at any point during the three-round affair. Miyashita was declared the winner on all three judges’ scorecards. While Fujiwara loses for the first time in over two years, Miyashita wins for the third consecutive time.

Kuniyoshi Hironaka vs. Wong Sik Park

Former UFC lightweight Kuniyoshi Hironaka (16-6) slugged it out with Wong Sik Park (7-2-1) for the first of three five-minute rounds before being awarded the TKO victory after Park’s corner threw in the towel from an apparent eye injury. For the first two minutes of the initial round both fighters took turns stuffing takedowns and then trading low leg kicks until “Parky” countered with a right hook that dazed Hironaka. Hironaka hung tough and fought back catching Park with an accidental glove to the eye late in the round. In between rounds, Park’s corner man threw in the towel ending hope for a victory in his DREAM debut. Hironaka (2-1 in DREAM) has won four straight bouts, all via stoppage, while Park loses for the first time since his professional debut over three years ago.

Yoshihiro Maeda vs. Chase Beebe

Yoshihiro Maeda (26-7-2) set a torrid pace from the start of the fight until he locked in a tight rear naked choke at the 3:36 mark of the 1st round on former WEC bantamweight champion Chase Beebe (12-6). Maeda came out from the opening bell swinging and kicking until a takedown from Beebe put a stop to the madness. The initial takedown lasted only seconds on the ground; however Maeda was successful with the fights’ second takedown, where he caught Beebe as he was scrambling to escape his disadvantageous position. In his post-game speech Maeda made it clear that he would first like to fight on New Year’s Eve and then would appreciate a fight with champion Bibiano Fernandes. Maeda (2-1 in DREAM) has won back-to-back bouts and three of his last four overall; Beebe (0-2 in DREAM), who may need to consider a change in weight, drops his fifth consecutive bout and hasn’t won since a WEC 30 bout in September of 2007.

Tarec Saffiedine vs. Dong Sik Yoon

Team Quest fighter Tarec Saffiedine proved to be a tough out as a replacement for Paulo Filho against Dong Sik Yoon (5-7), who escaped the three round technical striking battle with a split decision victory. Saffiedine, who took the fight on just days notice, controlled much of the first round with his ruthless attack of dirty boxing and knees. Dong Sik Yoon dominated round number two after converting a single leg takedown and transitioning to dominant position where he nearly finished the bout with a rear naked choke. It was the slow moving third frame, which saw both fighters receive a yellow card warning, which figured to be the deciding round. Both fighters had pleaded their case for the decision; Saffiedine landed solid combinations highlighted with precise uppercuts and Yoon made his mark with more accurate hooks to the head and body of his opponent. It was Yoon (2-3 in DREAM) who convinced two of the judges to earn the split decision win, his first after suffering three consecutive losses. Saffiedine (1-1 in DREAM) snaps a six-fight winning streak that he had accumulated over two plus years.

Katsuyori Shibata vs. Tokimitsu Ishizawa

When two professional wrestlers face-off inside a cage, it’s usually on a WWE pay-per-view card, however in Japan anything can happen. Katsuyori Shibata (4-6-1) dropped his wrestling idol, Tokimitsu Ishizawa (1-5-1), with a well-placed left hook and then finished him off with ground and pound to earn the Laughter7 fighter a 1st round TKO victory. Shibata (2-2 in DREAM), who seems to be getting serious about his MMA career, has won back-to-back bouts for the first time in his budding career. Ishizawa (0-1 in DREAM) has lost four straight bouts, all four were stopped early.

Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Zelg Galesic

Kazushi Sakuraba (26-12-1) proved once again why he is so well respected in Japan and all over the MMA universe after he hung on long enough to submit former Cage Rage UK middleweight champion Zelg Galesic (9-5) with a 1st round knee-bar. Sakuraba shot in for the single leg takedown and worked Galesic to the ground, all while still holding onto the leg that he had first secured. Galesic began to land numerous hammer-fists to the face, head, and body of the Japanese legend, trying to get out of the dangerous position that he was put in. Sakuraba weathered the storm long enough to work into a better position so that he could submit Galesic with a knee-bar. Galesic tapped almost immediately after Sakuraba transitioned from the leg to the knee; he had to be helped out of the cage by the DREAM medical staff. Galesic (2-2 in DREAM) has dropped back-to-back fights after winning his first two DREAM bouts. Sakuraba (3-1 in DREAM) has notched back-to-back wins or the first time in his DREAM career.

Marius Zaromskis vs. Myeon Ho Bae

DREAM welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis (13-3) showed why he is so dangerous with his 1st round head kick knockout versus South Korean Myeon Ho Bae (8-5). Zaromskis came out with a unique jumping knee attempt but instead was caught with a looping left hook that had him momentarily on his heels. Zaromskis circled to his right and struck with a high left head kick that put his Korean counterpart out while still on his feet. The win marks the fifth consecutive for Zaromskis (4-0 in DREAM), who has also been victorious in nine of his ten most recent bouts. Myeon Ho Bae (0-1 in DREAM), a recent participant in the M-1 Challenge and DEEP organizations, has lost two of his last three fights.

Eddie Alvarez vs. Katsunori Kikuno

Recent Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (19-2) rebounded from a lackluster 1st round, to secure a 2nd round arm triangle choke on DREAM lightweight contender Katsunori Kikuno (12-2-2). The victory will possibly earn Alvarez an opportunity to fight for the DREAM lightweight belt in the near future. Kikuno tired Alvarez out for much of the first frame with his standing crucifix attempt. Alvarez, totally dominated in the 1st round, fought back in the 2nd round to drop Kikuno with a left hook/straight right hand combination. After taking the fight to the ground, Alvarez reversed a guillotine from Kikuno to a fight-ending arm triangle choke from side mount position. Alvarez (4-0 in DREAM) has won four straight and nine of his last ten overall. Kikuno (1-1 in DREAM) had his impressive nine fight winning streak snapped with the loss to Alvarez. It marks the first time that Kikuno has been finished in over four years and sixteen bouts.

Alistair Overeem vs. James Thompson

In one of the most mismatched bouts in MMA history, Alistair Overeem (31-11) made quick work of James Thompson (14-11), submitting him with a standing guillotine only seconds into their DREAM 12 bout. Thompson made true on his entertaining “Gong-and-Dash,” although the 6’5” 265 pound British bruiser couldn’t execute on anything else as Overeem caught him and within seconds had him tapping from the guillotine submission. Thompson (0-1 in DREAM) has been defeated in five consecutive fights and nine of his last eleven overall. Overeem (3-0, 1 NC in DREAM) has recorded an undefeated record over the last two years at 6-0, with 1 no contest. He promised to come back to DREAM after completing his duties in K-1 fighting while speaking to the audience after his victory.
