Quinn Mulhern vs. Rich ClementiFighting on short notice, Quinn Mulhern came into his HDNet televised fight with UFC veteran Rich Clementi obviously feeling very little pressure. It showed, as Mulhern was able to pull off a huge upset winning via TKO by way of strikes at the 3:09 mark of the 2nd round. After a back and forth 1st round, Mulhern gained advantage in the 2nd frame with his surprisingly dominant ground game. After Clementi pulled guard, Mulhern opened up a cut on Clementi’s face with an elbow that worked to distract him enough so that he could get full mount position. After getting the top position, Mulhern began the ground and pound process hammering away with elbows and punches before the referee stepped in to call an end to the dismantling. Mulhern (9-1), 25, came into his most high profile bout off of his first career loss, however rebounded nicely with the stoppage victory. While Mulhern gained a lot of exposure and credit with the win, Clementi (45-16-1) suffered maybe the most devastating loss of his seasoned career. Coming into a bout that he was supposed to win, Clementi left disappointed, instead losing and snapping his three-fight winning streak.
Joe Coca vs. Abel CullumDefending King of the Cage Flyweight Champion Abel Cullum continued his steady career with an easy submission of “Bazooka” Joe Coca at 2:09 of the 1st round of their Flyweight Championship bout. Former DREAM fighter, Cullum, immediately clinched with Coca and then showed that he could do whatever he wished as long as the fight was on the ground. After pulling guard and working both a triangle choke and armbar, Coca was able to get back to his feet; however it soon went back to the mat where Cullum secured the fight-ending kimura submission. Cullum (17-3), 22, looks destined for bigger and better promotions, although for the time being looks content with being the King of the Cage Flyweight Champion. Joe Coca (8-1), 20, suffers the first loss of his young career after piling up eight straight to start his career.
Tyler East vs. Tony LopezAfter a controversial decision victory of Tony “Kryptonite” Lopez over Tyler “The Beast” East in their first meeting, the rematch was thought to bring plenty of fireworks to the King of the Cage Heavyweight Title bout. The rematch didn’t live up to the hype, as defending champ, Lopez, was able to secure a 1st round submission (4:54) over East leaving little doubt as to who the champ really is. The title bout began with both fighters throwing kicks, Lopez looked more on the defense trying to keep East a safe distance away with low leg kicks and front kicks. East finally got close enough to secure a takedown with about 1:30 remaining in the 1st round, however Lopez turned to the offensive from his back. During a transition, Lopez went from an armbar to a triangle choke submission, the latter working as the fight-ender. East (6-3), who is only 19-years of age, has lost back-to-back fights with Lopez. Prior to his consecutive losses, he had posted three straight victories, two of which in King of the Cage bouts. Defending KOTC Heavyweight Champ, Lopez (18-2), 36, notches his 16th straight victory which qualifies as one of the longest current streaks in all of MMA.
Victor Valenzuela vs. Donald SanchezDonald Sanchez kept his King of the Cage Interim Bantamweight Champion tag with an overwhelming 4th round (4:05) TKO of Victor “Joe Boxer” Valenzuela. Valenzuela possibly stole the first of the four rounds with his boxing skills, however it was Sanchez that dominated the second, third and fourth rounds. Sanchez secured takedowns in each of the last three rounds and then stayed on top of Valenzuela for much of each round. It was the fourth round when Sanchez converted another takedown and then began the ground and pound process on his way to a TKO finish late in the round. Sanchez (21-9), 25, in his 13th appearance for King of the Cage, earned his fourth consecutive victory and ninth career TKO. Valenzuela (9-5-2), 39, has now lost back-to-back bouts after posting victories in back-to-back bouts to start 2009.
Travis Wiuff vs. Mike KyleMike Kyle (16-7-1) used his heavy-handed striking game to earn the TKO victory at the end of the 2nd round when the ringside doctor deemed Travis Wiuff (60-14) not fit to continue. The bout was the main event on the five-fight King of the Cage “Vengeance” fight card. Wiuff spent much of the 1st round on top after he converted a double leg takedown at the 3:15 mark. He worked elbows and punches from top position and almost finished the fight with a guillotine choke. Kyle survived the initial flurry of offense and then took control during the 2nd round with some accurate stand-up. After referee Herb Dean stood the fighters up, Kyle wobbled Wiuff for the second time and then caught him with a left hand at the bell. When the confusion was sorted out, it was decided that Wiuff was not in any shape to continue meaning Kyle was the victor. Kyle’s victory was his fifth out of his last six fights, a stretch that included a pair of Strikeforce bouts. The 29-year old American Kickboxing Academy fighter is now in solid position to get picked back up by another major organization. Wiuff, 31, had his four-fight win streak snapped with the TKO defeat. With a victory, Wiuff stood to get a chance at another big-time organization. The 74-fight vet has fought for the UFC, Sengoku, PRIDE, and the IFL to name a few.
