Daisuke Nakamura vs. Ferrid Kheder

The night’s first HD Net televised bout turned out to be arguably the most entertaining. Ferrid Kheder (13-5), making his M-1 debut, came into this lightweight bout overweight at 159 pounds and was forced to give up part of his fight purse win or lose. Japanese veteran Daisuke Nakamura (20-11) punished Kheder even more, picking him apart for three full rounds on his way to a unanimous decision victory.

Nakamura got off to a fast start, landing punches, kicks and knees. Kheder had his moments early on landing some power punches, however none that Nakamura couldn’t handle. Kheder was content with taking punches from Nakamura and occasionally landing a strong kick or punch. He dropped Nakamura with a low kick late in the 2 nd round but as flashy as it was, it didn’t do much damage. Nakamura finished his lopsided decision victory by landing several combinations. Kheder did finish the fight by securing a takedown and an arm triangle submission attempt, nonetheless it was way too little and way too late.

With the victory, Nakamura’s career is at an all time high winning nine of his last ten fights. The DEEP, Cage Rage and Pride veteran is now 5-0 in the M-1 ring defeating top level fighters. The loss stops an accumulated eight fight winning streak for Kheder, who was fighting for the first time in since early April.

Lloyd Marshbanks vs. Michael Kita

In an intriguing heavyweight bout, Team World’s Michael Kita (6-3) took advantage of a dominant position and hammered Lloyd Marshbanks (18-9) for the submission victory 1:50 into the 1 st round.

After catching a front kick, Lloyd Marshbanks threw Kita to the mat and jumped into an advantageous position. Although, “Kadillac” was still in side-control, Kita got to his feet long enough to begin his striking assault. Kita hammered on his opponent, who tapped three separate times before the referee finally intervened.

Kita, with possibly the most impressive victory of his young career, has increased his credibility as a heavyweight prospect. Kita, now 3-1 in his M-1 career, has won three straight contests, all three via stoppage. Marshbanks, who came into the bout winning his last three bouts, falls to 2-1 in M-1 fights.

Rob Broughton vs. Jesse Gibbs

In what was predicted to be a heavyweight slugfest, instead turned into a low energy three round unanimous decision for Jesse Gibbs (9-2). Both fighters were touted and marketed as two of the top heavyweights in the M-1 Challenge; however did little to increase their value in their United States debut.

“The Bear”, Rob Broughton (10-5-1), definitely was the aggressor early on hitting with several well-timed jabs and hooks. When the fight hit the ground, it was Gibbs who ran with the momentum almost finishing his Team England opponent with a kimura. After the 1 st round the action slowed considerably, so much that the fighters received many jeers from the Kansas City crowd. With the fight being fairly even through two rounds, Gibbs put Broughton on his back and laid on top of him for much of the remainder of the fight.

Gibbs, who showed that two fights in two weeks took a toll on him, has now won three straight bouts. His 7-1 M-1 Global record is among the best in the organization. Broughton, who many believed to be the favorite in this bout, dropped his first bout in his last three contests. He now carries a 2-1 M-1 record.

Mikhail Zayats vs. Lucio Linhares

Lucio Linhares (13-4) used a hard right hand to drop Red Devil Sports Club fighter, Mikhail Zayats (8-4) to the ground, setting up the fight ending rear naked choke 1:00 into the 1st round.

Zayats came into the bout with the significant advantage in the striking department, and looked like he would use that to his benefit. Although he connected on several jabs and hooks, Zayats was dropped with a wild right hook. As Zayats was scrambling to his feet, Linhares jumped on his back and immediately locked in the rear naked choke.

Finland resident, Linhares, has now won five straight bouts all by way of stoppage. His 5-2 record in M-1 Challenge is filled with impressive victories. Zayats, who has fought exclusively for M-1, has lost his third consecutive bout and is now 1-1 in his career versus Linhares.

John Doyle vs. Karl Amoussou

Karl “Psycho” Amoussou (11-2-1) dominated Philadelphia native, John Doyle (8-9) in every aspect of the fight on way to his 1st round (3:15) rear naked choke submission victory.

Doyle, who was replacing an injured Nick Thompson, began the fight with an immediate takedown. Amoussou stayed busy from bottom position, connecting on several effective strikes. After nearly a minute on his back, Amoussou converted on a perfectly executed sweep into a mount position. In a panic, Doyle gave up his back and Amoussou took advantage. Doyle defended for a short time but ran out of options when Amoussou locked a rear naked choke, tapping with almost two minutes remaining in the 1st round.

Amoussou proved that he is ready for a shot in one of the major promotions, winning his third straight and sixth out of his last seven. While Amoussou 6-2 M-1 record is respectable, Doyle’s 1-2 organizational record may have cost him his job with the company. After beginning his career with a 6-1 record, he has now dropped eight of his last ten contests.

Gegard Mousasi vs. Fedor Emilianenko – Exhibition Sparring Match

Two of the top fighters in the world of MMA went at it half-speed in an exhibition sparring bout for the M-1 fans. Fedor demonstrated that he could take down Mousasi at will. Mousasi showed his worth converting on a couple of takedowns himself. Fedor continued his dominance by mounting Mousasi a couple of minutes into the bout. After seconds in the mount position, Fedor transitioned in typical fashion to a bout-ending armbar submission.

Mark Kerr vs. Mo Lawal – Main Event

When Don Frye pulled out of the M-1 Breakthrough main event many fans didn’t give his replacement, Mark Kerr, much of a chance. “King Mo” stayed the course in his young MMA career, easily pounding Kerr out 25 seconds into the 1st round.

Forty year old Mark Kerr tried a body kick when the two met in the middle of the cage. Lawal wanted nothing to do with the kick, catching it, picking him up and dumping Kerr on his side. In typical Lawal fashion, he began to pound on his grounded opponent until the referee put a stop to it. The highlight seemed to be Kerr’s mouthpiece flying across the cage courtesy of a solid right hook by “King Mo”. Kerr looked to have suffered a shoulder injury in addition to the pounding he took.

While Lawal proved that he is making progress and winning the fights he is supposed to, he didn’t get much in the way of cage experience. Lawal, looking impressive in his American debut, has now won four of his five bouts with TKO’s. Kerr basically demonstrated that he doesn’t belong in a cage or ring anymore. His shoulder injury may have just spelled his last MMA bout of his career.
