Check out all of the complete MFC 22 results for each fight listed below.
MFC 22 Main Event - Jason MacDonald vs. Travis LutterFormer UFC middleweight contender Travis Lutter (10-5) spoiled the homecoming bout for Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald (21-13) by dominating the first two rounds then surviving the last to take a unanimous decision victory. There was no question as to who was in control throughout the first two rounds, as Lutter methodically worked into dominant positions and nearly finishing the bout more than once with rear naked choke attempts. Late in the 2nd round, Lutter was seconds from sinking his arm under MacDonald’s chin for the submission. However, the Canadian native defended and survived in order to give himself a chance in the 3rd and final round. “The Athlete” did remain active and with no doubt won the last round but never really threatened to finish Lutter thus falling short on the judges’ cards. Both fighters are attempting to work their way back into a UFC contract, however MacDonald’s hopes were, at the very least, temporarily dashed. Lutter notched his first win since April of 2008 after losing to Rich Franklin and Anderson Silva. MacDonald, fighting in MFC for the first time since 2006, has lost three consecutive bouts in the past year.
Antonio McKee vs. Carlo PraterAfter the scheduled lightweight title bout was scrapped due to Carlos Prater (24-7-1) missing weight, Antonio McKee, the current champ, (23-3-2) took his frustration out in the ring on his way to a unanimous decision victory. McKee lived up to his moniker of a ‘grind-it-out’ type of fighter, using his superior wrestling skills to keep Prater at bay. The two fighters took a considerable amount of time to get the action started, however when McKee took Prater to the mat a couple of minutes into the 3 round non-title affair, that is where the fight remained. Each round was similar, as McKee would connect with numerous elbows and short punches from top position. The fight was never in danger of being finished by either fighter. McKee, who mentioned that he believes he is the best in the world at 155, hasn’t lost in over 13 bouts which date back over six years. Prater, who was coming off a May decision win in Palace FC, lost for the second time in his last three bouts. He is 1-1 in his MFC career; McKee is 2-0.
John Alessio vs. Luigi FioravantiXtreme Couture’s John Alessio (26-13) demonstrated his improved striking by knocking Luigi Fioravanti (15-6) out 1:34 into the 3rd frame. Alessio followed a well-thought out game plan, although having to take a number of heavy shots, he avoided the “big one” with his footwork. Fioravanti looked to be in control early on, getting the better of the exchanges, until Alessio countered with his weapon of choice that put Fioravanti on his back. Alessio stopped thinking the bout was over, but shortly realized that he better finish, which he did, with two hard right hands. Alessio puts himself in line for a possible MFC welterweight title shot by winning his fourth fight out of his last six. Fioravanti, making his MFC debut, loses for the first time since his release from the UFC.
Mike Nickels vs. David HeathIn what was quite possibly the Fight of the Night, Mike Nickels (8-2) broke David Heath (13-6) down then submitted him with a rear naked choke late in the 3rd round. After a fairly slow 1st round, where both fighters took their time trying to feel each other out, the action picked up considerably in the next two rounds until Nickels got the fight to the ground long enough to sink in a fight-ending rear naked choke. Nickels had an easy time landing the shots, however wasn’t able to finish Heath with his power. In fact, during the final round, Heath dropped his hands in order to allow Nickels a number of punches to the face. Heath, who also looked sharp with his stand up, may have bit off more than he could chew, running out of stamina for his defense. Nickels is now 3-0 since being released from the UFC in the summer of 2007. Heath, who is well-known for being on the receiving end of a Babalu choke, has his two-fight win streak stopped. He has now dropped three of four MFC bouts.
Marvin Eastman vs. Ryan JimmoRyan Jimmo (11-1) escaped with a narrow split decision victory over UFC veteran Marvin “Beastman” Eastman (16-11-1), in what many believed should have been scored the other way around. Jimmo and Eastman spent much of the fight in each others’ clinch, trying to use their dirty boxing and muay thai skills to wear each other down. The stand-up was virtually even as neither was able to land a significant blow. In the very short amount of fight time that was spent on the floor, Eastman looked to be in control of Jimmo. Nevertheless, the karate expert earned the victory via 29-29 scores from two judges, while the final judge awarded Eastman the same score. Jimmo, now 4-0 in MFC action, is on an eleven fight winning streak. The win over Eastman gives him a credible name on his fight resume, which lacked a notable victory up to this point. Eastman has lost four of his last five bouts, falling to 1-1 in MFC action.
Pete Spratt vs. Nathan GunnVeteran Pete Spratt (20-15) used his powerful punching ability to brutally knock out previously undefeated Nathan Gunn (7-1) late in the 2nd round. The first round was in favor of Gunn, who used an all-around effort to take the early lead. However, after defending Spratt’s early combinations, Gunn was caught off-guard by a right uppercut and sent crashing to the floor where he lay motionless for several moments. Spratt is now a winner in back-to-back bouts after suffering back-to-back losses last year. The 10 year MMA vet is 1-1 within the MFC ring. Gunn, who was making his MFC debut, lost for the first time in his career.
