After an exciting night of fights from the banks of Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio, those in attendance walked out of the Nautica Pavilion quite satisfied. The Cleveland area was well-represented in the event, with Strong Style MMA and GriffonRawl MMA each having several fighters participate.

Kicking off the event was a series of Amateur bouts:

  • At bantamweight Tyler Saltsman used a strong set of takedowns and a mauling ground and pound attack to take a unanimous decision from Victor Guarriello.
  • In the lightweight division, Clint Musser used his wrestling background to set up a guillotine choke and finish Mike Putnam in the first round.
  • Next up, Cory Ruthsatz and Craig Wilson squared off in a featherweight match. Ruthsatz used some slick transitions to set up an armbar in the first round.
  • The ladies took to the cage next in a matchup between Tamikka Brents and Jessica Zomcik. Brents used her heavy hands and cage control to score a split decision after 3 rounds.
  • Zac Gobel looked to make short work of #1 ranked amateur middleweight Milan Wesley and Gobel did so, with a rear naked choke victory in just 1:08 of the very first round.
  • RJ Buck used a slam and solid takedowns to earn a unanimous decision over Ben Quigley in a featherweight bout. Quigley attempted submission after submission, but Buck managed to avoid being submitted in every round.
  • Frankie Perez, a student of Ricardo Almeida, used a competent ground game to control Kenny Jackson en route to a unanimous decision in lightweight action.
  • Joey “Hitman” Holt did enough in the eyes of the judges against Bryon McCroskey to earn the split decision after 3 rounds in the lightweight division.
  • In the final amateur bout of the evening, Bill Morosetti took on #1 ranked Reggie Parks in a welterweight matchup. Morosetti used a well-planned ground game to set up submission attempt after submission attempt, finally getting Parks to tap out by way of arm bar in the second round.

NAAFS Professional Fights

Kicking off the professional fights, Gerric Hayes kept his submissions streak alive by submitting Chuck Ellison via kneebar in the 1 st round. Ellison left the cage under his own power, but appeared to be in a great deal of pain following the submission.

In one of the most anticipated bouts of the evening, hometown fighter Jessica Eye took on Amanda LaVoy in a women’s 125-pound bout. Eye used a series of vicious strikes on the feet, paired with a smothering ground and pound attack to force the referee to stop the fight in the 2 nd round. At the time the fight was stopped, Eye had LaVoy’s arms trapped and Eye was dropping heavy strikes to the face of LaVoy.

Fan-favorite Jessica Eye won her pro debut defeating Amanda LaVoy by TKO in Round 2.

Brian “The Predator” Rogers showed off his skills in front of his hometown fans in his victory over Jason Jones. Rogers ended the fight in short order, first landing a lethal kick to the body that crumpled Jones to the mat. Rogers swarmed Jones and rained down punches until the referee stopped the fight with after just 52 seconds. Rogers would earn the Stoppage of the Night Award.

Indiana native Brian Sparks took on John Hawk in a light heavyweight bout that ended with Sparks having his hand raised. After a back and forth battle with both fighters taking control at various points, Sparks managed to keep the fight from going to a judge’s decision by earning a submission victory by rear naked choke with just eight seconds left in the fight.

John Stansbury improved his record to 11-4 with a guillotine choke in the first round over Dane Bonningson. In a match that displayed each fighter’s grappling ability, it was Stansbury that found an opportunity and capitalized.

“Showtime” AJ Aeschlimann and Brandon Ezzo squared off for the interim Middleweight title with Showtime coming out on top. Aeschlimann appeared in control the entire fight and finished the fight with a rear naked choke from the back mount position to take control of the belt.

In the main event of the evening, Strong Style representative Chris Lozano met Jason Dent of GriffonRawl in a 170 pound Superfight. Dent came into the fight having never been knocked out and Lozano was riding a streak of four consecutive knockout victories. When the action kicked off, there was no doubt about it, this was going to be a stand and bang type of fight with neither fighter showing any interest in takedowns. Lozano hammered away at Dent in the first round, but Dent hung tough and began chopping away at Lozano’s left leg with some nasty leg kicks. While it was not apparent during the fight, it has since been confirmed by ProFighting-fans.com that Dent suffered a broken left forearm from a Lozano kick in round 1. Lozano demonstrated his well-rounded striking with a variety of attacks throughout while Dent showcased his heart and tough chin. Dent suffered cuts on the eye and in his hairline which were deemed bad enough to warrant a doctor’s stoppage following round #4 with Lozano being named the winner. It was clear that neither fighter wanted the fight to end that way, and each had nothing but praise for the other as that put a cap on an exciting fight card.
