NAAFS War on the Shore 4 Results: War on the Shore 4 Fight Card Results
The NAAFS put on War on the Shore 4 on July 24, 2010 at The Cove in Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio. War on the Shore 4 was an all-amateur MMA event featuring a main event between the NAAFS Amateur Lightweight Champion George Comer facing Al Pacosky. ProFighting-fans.com tracks NAAFS events below with all of the results from War on the Shore 4 as well as other NAAFS event results.
War on the Shore IV- July 24th, 2010
Here we are coming at you live from Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio for the NAAFS and their 4th War on the Shore. Tonight we have a plethora of Amateur Series mixed martial arts action from literally right on the shore of Lake Erie. This live coverage of the fights are brought to you by Intimidation Clothing. Check them out online at IntimidationClothing.com and you will find a selection of MMA-inspired clothing for men and ladies alike.
The fights are being held under a tent behind The Cove in Geneva-on-the-Lake, so there is a laid-back atmosphere in the crowd, but that will change as soon as the cage door closes and the action begins. The Cleveland area is well-represented with a number of fighters from StrongStyle MMA ( Independence) and GriffonRawl ( Mentor). Not only is the fight card dotted with local fighters, but their families, friends, and teammates are out in full force in the audience, here to offer their support despite the heat. Enough with the introductions, we are ready to rock and roll here at the Cove for War on the Shore IV.
Jeff Pelton vs. Zak Gilyard (155 lbs)
Pelton brings a strong wrestling background to the, with several strong showings at the Ohio State Wrestling Tournament, including a state Championship. Pelton looks relaxed as the cage door closes and we are ready to roll for 3 rounds of 3 minutes apiece.
After the bell, Pelton throws a flurry of strikes and Gilyard pulls guard. Gilyard is bleeding from his right eye and is eating lots of strikes. Pelton seems to be content in Gilyard’s guard and is not looking to pass. Pelton even attempts a few slams before raining down the punches. Gilyard is looking for a kneebar with about 30 seconds to go in round one. Pelton slips out of the attempt and pummels Gilyard with punches, causing the referee to stop the fight with 10 seconds remaining in round 1.
Pelton wins by TKO (strikes) over Gilyard
Victor Guarriello vs. George Murphy – Bantamweight
Murphy represents GriffonRawl so his followers are out in large numbers. Murphy grabs a clinch, but is taken down quickly. Murphy falls to guard an grabs for a guillotine choke. Guarriello slips out and Murphy slips in a triangle choke. Guarriello slips out after a lifting slam and subsequent body punches. The action is stopped due to a lost mouth guard and Murphy begins peppering his opponent with body kicks. Murphy shoots for and scores a takedown. Murphy tries to move to sidecontrol while Guarriello is throwing strikes from the bottom. Round 1 ends and I would have to score that round for George Murphy based on his control of the opponent, a few submission attempts, and striking.
UFC veteran Jason Dent is in the corner of Murphy and is instructing Murphy between rounds to stay loose and calm. Guarriello unloads some heavy shots while Murphy corrals him into the cage. Guarriello is bleeing from the nose. The action is stopped and we return to the center of the cage. Murphy presses his opponent into the cage. The round ends with Murphy pressing Guarrello into the cage. Murphy throws knees to the body while Guarrriello throws heavy right hands to the face and body of Murphy.
10-9 Murphy.
While we are between rounds, this is the perfect time to mention that Murphy is sponsored by Intimidation Clothing. Visit them online at IntimidationClothing.com
Here we go in round 3. The tables have turned here with Guarriello pressing Murphy into the cage. Murphy drops his head for a half-hearted shot attempt and Guarriello sinks in a choke. Murphy appears to stop moving and Guarriello is blocking the referee’s view. Guarriello lets go of the choke and throws a few undefended strikes to the head of an unconscious Murphy before the referee steps in to stop the fight.
Guarriello wins by TKO (punches) over Murphy
Chuck Jones vs Nick Albrecht (145 lbs)
Albrecht is fighting out of GriffonRawl and is brought to the cage by his teammates. Jones is introduced as fighting out of Fairport, Ohio, so both fighters are hometown boys. There has been much trash-talk on the NAAFS message boards about this match-up so the action in the cage will settle some disputes.
Albrecht shoots for a takedown and gets it momentarily before popping back to his feet. A second takedown attempt gets him sidecontrol where he begins raining down heavy punches. Jones kicks Albrecht and they momentarily go back to the feet before another Albrecht takedown. Neither fighter looks especially experienced in the standup game and Albrecht gets another takedown by vicious slam. Albrecht wins round one 10-9.
Albrecht shoots for a takedown and moves to sidecontrol. The fighters are slick and slippery and maintaining top control seems next to impossible.Albrecht shoots for a takedown and moves to sidemount. Albrecht, who by the way is sponsored by Intimidation Clothing, moves to full mount and rains down punches as the round ends. Round 2 goes to Albrecht 10-9.
Albrecht wants nothing to do with the standup game and he immediately takes Jones down and takes mount. Jones bellies down and defends the rear naked choke. Albrecht flips Jones over and appears too tired to do much in the way of striking. The fighters regain the standing position and both have their mouths hanging wide open, leaving them susceptible to the knockout. Albrecht takes Jones down yet again and ends the fight in mount. Albrecht goes back to the his corner with hands held high as we wait for the decision. No shocker there as the unanimous decision goes to Albrecht (30-27).
Nick Albrecht wins by unanimous decision over Chuck Jones
Neil Delos Reyes vs. Bob Hopkins (Welterweight)
Delos Reyes fights out of Cleveland’s own OhioBJJC while his opponent represents Evolve MMA, evidently he is from the Cleveland area because he sprts a Mushroomhead tattoo on his shoulder.
Both fighers are getting in some solid shots on the feet with Delos Reyes appearing to have the upperhand. Hopkins ducks under some heavy hands and secures a trip. Delos Reyes goes to guard and attempts an armbar in vain. Hopkins slips out of the attempt and throws some punches until the round ends. I’ll score that round 10-9 for Delos Reyes.
Delos Reyes is supported by teammate RJ Buck, who fights later on this evening. Buck I shouting out instructions from cageside.
Delos reyes grabs the clinch and lands a few knees to the body before Hopkins takes him down. Delos Reyes looks for an armbar and Hopkins uses the opportunity to pass to halfguard. Not much in the way of action as the round ends with Hopkins in the halfguard of Delos Reyes. Round 2 goes to Hopkins 10-9.
Third round here we go. The fighters touch gloves to start the round and immediately start throwing punches. Hipkins looks gassed and shoots a half-hearted shot that results in Delos Reyes taking his back, but then Hopkins throws Delos Reyes off and Hopkins takes half-guard again, and looks for a guillotine choke. Hopkins throws down some hammerfists and shots to the body. Hopkins finishes the fight on top and likely just scored a decision victory.
Bob Hopkins wins by split decision over Neil Delos Reyes
Daniel Zenowicz vs Dustin Wolf
In between fights, we have some unplanned action as two guys decided the fighting in the cage was not enough for them. There’s one in every crowd and for those in attendance tonight, hopefully they don’t leave this event with a bad taste in their mouths. Let it be known that not every mixed martial arts fan is a meathead or moron. It is too bad that this is often the impression to those outside of the MMA world.
As is their tradition, StrongStyle escorts their fighter (Wolf) to the cage en masse. Zenowicz is blooeied immediately by a shot to the nose and Zenowicz is digging and eventually scores a takedown. Zenowicz moves to side control, but is unable to pass to the mount. Wolf stays calm and mreverses position before the fighters end up on their feet. A flurry of action results in both fighters momentarily ending upon top of the other with no real damaging strikes thrown by either man. Wolf ends the round on top of Zenowicz and most likely won the round based on the majority of control.
Wolf takes a shot and cannot finish. Zenowicz lands some strikes eventually giving up his back. Wolf is unable to put both hooks in and seems content to throw the occasional hammerfist. Wolf momentarily gains full mount before ending up on his belly, trying to finish a shot. That was a tough round to score, but Wolf held the advantageous position for most of the round.
Wolf is sponsored by intimidation Clothing. Zenowicz gains a takedown and Wolf immediately looks for a kimura, which he is unable to finish. Wolf throws in a tight trianglechoke and has Zenowicz flattened out before Zenowicz slips out. Wolf maneuvers to the top and ends up in Zenowicz’s guard. The referee stands the fighters up and Wolf scores another takedown as time runs out.
Dustin Wolf wins by unanimous decision over Daniel Zenowicz
John Burbol vs. Butch Davis
According to the program, Butch Davis is giving up 15 lbs to Burbol, so the weight differential may be a factor in the fight. Burbol is the hometown fighter, representing Eastlake. Davis is a long-limbed fighter and looks for a trip right off the bat, but ends up on his back being mounted by Burbol. Burbol throws hammerfists while Davis looks to reverse position, and does, with Davis going into Burbol’s guard. Burbol is sponsored by Intimidation Clothing. Burbol attempts an armbar, and in so doing, gives up, side control.
Round 2 starts with some rangy punches. Burbol has the heavier hands and seems to be getting the better of Davis on the feet. Davis presses Burbol into the cage and the fight is stood up. Upon the restart, Burbol throws a couple of haymakers and lands a heavy shot to the head of Davis, putting Davis’ lights out.
John Burbol wins by knockout in round 2 over Butch Davis
Justin White vs. Dan Farnworth (145 lbs)
Both fighters are from the eastern suburbs of Cleveland, with White from Painesville and Farnsworth representing GriffonRawl in Mentor.
Farnsworth is sponsored by Intimidation Clothing.
White shoots for a quick takedown and Farnsworth immediately throws up a triangle choke, which he finishes in short order.
I am told that Farnsworth’s triangle choke submission was the fastest in NAAFS history at :34 seconds. Congratulations to Dan on that accomplishment.
Dan Farnsworth wins by submission (triangle choke) over Justin White
Josh Oppenheimer vs. Ricky Sandlin (170 lbs.)
Oppenheimer is by far the tallest fighter to step foot in the cage this evening, with his head clearing the top of the cage by several inches. He appears to have the height and reach advantage, as well as the beard advantage. Sandlin represents Triple Threat MMA from Painseville, Ohio, while Oppenheimer fights for Evolve MMA.
A low blow by Oppenheimer brings the action to a halt right at the beginning of the fight.
Oppenheimer uses his reach advantage to keep distance, but slips and goes to his back. Sandlin takes advantage, rushing in for a mount. Oppenheimer keeps his head about him and transitions to take the top position. Oppenheimer moves to Sandlin’s back and finishes the fight with strikes.
Josh Oppenheimer wins by TKO in the 1st round over Ricky Sandlin
Zach Sutek vs. Ryan Victory (155 lbs)
Victory waits for a legkick and catches it, scoring a takedown. Sutek looks to tie up Victory’s arms and circles his hips, possibly looking for an armbar. Sutek reverses position and goes to side control and eventually sinks in a rear naked choke, though in actuality he is off to the side and loses the choke. Sutek regains the choke and finishes the fight by way of rear naked choke.
Zach Sutek wins by submission (rear naked choke) over Ryan Victory
Rick Foster vs. Matt Hopkins (170 lbs)
Foster fights out of Triple Threat MMA in Painesville, while his opponent Hopkins trains at GriffonRawl MMA in Mentor, Ohio. Heading into this bout, the GriffonRawl team is 3-1, and they are looking to improve on that in this fight. Hopkins certainly has the louder cheering section, with a majority of the crowd on their feet during his entrance. Foster is a thick fighter, well built on the top and the bottom. Hopkins is introduced as fighting out of Geneva, Ohio, and he is tall and lanky. Hopkins is sponsored by Intimidation Clothing.
Hopkins shoots for a takedown and scores it, peppering Foster with strikes. Hopkins appears to be content with staying in Foster’s guard, and Hopkins is pressing Foster into the cage. The round ends with Hopkins throwing heavy hands to the head of Foster. Round 1 goes to Hopkins 10-9.
Hopkins looks for a shot and presses Foster into the cage. Foster muscles out and throws a spinning back kick to Hopkins’ chest. Hopkins waits on another low kick and capitalizes, taking Foster to his back. Foster looks for a triangle submission, but Hopkins slips out of it. Hopkins moves to north/south position and loses it with Foster getting back to his feet. Hopkins uses his long limbs to score yet another takedown as round 2 ends. Hopkins 10-9.
Round 3, here we go. Foster looks reenergized by the break. The crowd is really getting behind Hopkins, chanting his name. Hopkins scores aanother takedown, this time off of a single leg shot. Hopkins moves to side control after Foster attempts an armbar. Foster is pressing on the cage, looking to reverse position. Hopkins looks for an Americana, but loses it, as the fighters are soaked with sweat. Through a scramble, Hopkins takes Foster’s back and sinks in a rear naked choke. Foster is not done yet, throwing pnches to the head of Hopkins as time expires.
Matt Hopkins wins by unanimous decision over Rick Foster
Following the victory, Hopkins thanks his sponsors, including Intimidation Clothing, and then thanks the fans for coming out to cheer for him in his hometown.
Windom Craig vs. Nelson Best (Hvy)
Windom Craig comes to the cage wearing an Intimidation Clothing MMA t-shirt and a Karate Kid inspired headband. No word on whether Intimidation will begin manufacturing the Daniel-San headbands, but I am really concerned with Craig facing a fighter from Cobra Kai.
Best is ranked #4 in the NAAFS Amateur Heavyweight Division.
Best presses Craig up against the cage and digs for a single leg, but is unable to finish. Best floors Craig with a left hand and moves to side control. Best is working an Americana, but as previously mentioned, the fighters are too slippery to get much of a grasp. Best lands a devastating left hook and the cageside doctors are attending to Craig.
Nelson Best took this fight on 4 days notice, and came out on top.
Nelson Best wins by Knockout over Windom Craig
After a short intermission, we will now move on to the feature bouts of the evening.
Shannon Floyd vs. Deanna Biesan
Not to be outdone by the men, the ladies of northeast Ohio step up to showcase their skills in the cage.
Biesan looks calm, despite only having one previous amateur bout under her belt.
StrongStyle, as they are known for, escorts Biesan down the aisle to the cage.
Biesan immediately grabs a muay thai clinch and begins peppering Floyd with knees to the body. Floyd drops down for a shot attempt which is stuffed by Biesan. Biesan quickly slaps on a guillotine choke and maneuvers her way to a submission victory. It took a great effort, as Floyd had the height advantage. Biesan needed to work her opponent to a bent knee position against the cage so Biesan could apply the necessary pressure to finish the fight.
Deanna Biesan wins by submission (guillotine choke) over Shannon Floyd
Mario Micale vs. Brett Gruber
Micale begins the fight with furious punches, leaving Grubermostly on defense. Gruber pulls guard and seems to be looking for an arm. Gruber eventually throws up a triangle attempt and witches to an armbar attempt. Now back to a triangle. Gruber readjusts and finishes the fight with a triangle.
Brett Gruber wins by submission (triangle choke) over Mario Micale
Francis Healy vs. Ben Quigley
Healy is 4-0 while Quigley’s record stands at 5-2. This bout is a late addition to the card, but we are looking forward to some intense action inside the cage. At this point in the event, I’d like to mention that this coverage is brought to you by Intimidation MMA Clothing. Check them out online at www.IntimidationClothing.com. I would like to give credit to the announcer. Despite the high heat and higher humidity, he is still dressed in his tux, and making it look good.
The bout starts with a flurry of punches from both fighters. Healy executes an outside trip and takes Quigley to the mat. Quigley recovers full guard. Healy is into side control and is just raining down strikes. This one is over.
Francis Healy wins by TKO over Ben Quigley
Donny Walker steps into the cage to hype his upcoming fight with Mike Nesto for the NAAFS Featherweight belt on August 28 at Rock 'N Rumble. Intimidation Clothing is supplying two shirts that Donny threw out to the psyched crowd. Seeing the throwing arm on Donny makes it very clear why he went into the fight game instead of becoming a Major League pitcher. Good choice, Donny.
Bob Rech vs. Joe SanFilippo (185lbs)
Rech is ranked #5 in the NAAFS rankings, while SanFilippo is ranked #4. Let’s see how accurate the rankings are.
Both fighters are throwing some lunging shots, with Rech landing and dropping SanFilippo. Rech tells SanFilippo to get back up, and Rech promptly drops SanFilippo for good.
Bob Rech wins by KO over Joe SanFilippo
Corey Ruthsatz vs. RJ Buck
Buck comes into the cage with some neon yellow short trunks, so he will not go unnoticed in this fight. Buck is ranked #2 in the NAAFS Amateur Featherweight division.
The fight begins with some muscling for position with each fighter taking control of the cage while landing some knees to the thighs. Buck uses a combination of footstomps and knees to the thigh to set up a trip attempt, which he gets and moves to Ruthsatz’ guard. Ruthsatz attempts an armbar as the round comes to a close. Round 1 goes to Buck 10-9.
Ruthsatz attempts a throw and slips. Buck Goes into guard, avoiding another armbar attempt. Ruthsatz is throwing leg kicks in bunches. Buck waits on a kick and catches it, scoring a takedown. Buck moves to sidecontrol and looks form mount. Ruthsatz goes to his stomach and Buck throws punches until the referee has no choice but to stop the fight.
RJ Buck wins by TKO over Corey Ruthsatz
Rachel Dovidio vs. Nola Hessom
Hessom is ranked #1 in the NAAFS Amateur Women’s Division.
Hessom comes out with a southpaw stance and is making no mistake that she wants this fight to go to the ground. Hessom pulls guard. Hesson is digging for an armbar and there is a scramble with Dovidio ending up with a kneebar attempt. The round ends in the scramble position. Tough round to score but the edge goes to Hesson 10-9.
Round two kicks off with a flurry of punches. Dovidio is looking strong and she eventually puts Hessom to her back against the cage. The referee is dangerously close to ending the fight, and Dovidio adds one more big punch for good measure.
Rachel Dovidio wins by 2nd round TKO over Nola Hessom
Now we move on to our main event of the evening. The bout features two local fighters, Al Pacosky of Painesville against George Comer of GriffonRawl in Mentor.
NAAFS Main Event: Al Packosky vs. George Comer
At a glance, I believe GriffonRawl is 4-1 to this point in the night while Triple Threat MMA stands at 0-2. Local bragging rights are in order for the winner of this fight. I am told by GriffonRawl standout fighter Donny Walker that Comer is an outstanding wrestler and an explosive striker. Walker says that Comer is an excellent teammate and is an inspiration to all of his teammates at GriffonRawl. Comer is the reigning NAAFS Amateur champion. It is worth mentioning that Comer, along with the rest of GriffonRawl, is sponsored by Intimidation Clothing.
Both fighters begin the fight with some leg kicks and heavy punches. Comer drops Packosky with a right hand and looks to finish. Packosky is aware enough to wrap Comer up in his guard. Comer looks to pass guard and manages to take side control and eventually back sidecontrol. Comer throws some calculated strikes to the head of Packosky as time expires in the first round. Comer wins that round 10-9 or possibly 10-8.
Comer shoots in for a quick takedown and Packosky sets up a guard. Packosky works to his knees and both fighters show some wrestling skills. Comer is again using well aimed strikes to keep his opponent down. Round 2 is over and I am scoring this one for Comer 10-9.
Comer is in on a takedown. Comer is using the cage to control Packosky. Packosky
manages to make some distance and looks, momentarily for a kneebar. Comer is using heavy hands to dictate this fight. The referee puts them to their feet and Comer grabs a takedown, sealing the fight in his favor.
Though this fight goes to the judges, there isn’t much suspense.
George Comer wins by unanimous decision (30-27x3) over Al Packosky
As the night comes to a close, GriffonRawl went 5-1 on the night and cage announcer Jake Digman even got some attention as it was his birthday and the victorious Comer sang to him.
That’s it from War on the Shore IV.
