Shine FightsThe Triangle Choke takes a look at the Shine Fights, a MMA promotion that is set to debut in May 2009
Shine Fights premieres in Columbus, OH on May 9th at the Ohio Expo Center. Their debut event is appropriately named Genesis. I recently spoke with Brothers Devin and Dorian (former TUF participant) Price about their organization and what they foresee in the immediate future.
TTC- When did the thought process of having a MMA organization begin? D&D- I watched Dorian compete in the mid 90s in Thai Boxing. That is really when it all started. When Dorian went on The Ultimate Fighter I saw how the fight game really was. There were some good shows around and a lot of bad shows around. We saw a lot of opportunity for us. We knew how hard it was to get a fight against a quality opponent. We decided to create a promotion that allows fighters fight who they want to fight and fans get so see quality matchups.
TTC- Where did the name Shine Fights come from? D&D- Dorian actually came up with the name. The name really emphasizes what our organization is all about. Dorian- Its about giving fighters a chance to shine. We want to give fighters quality fights and give them a chance to showcase their abilities. The best way to sum up Shine Fights is; it’s a fighter’s organization. In my travels I’ve been around a lot of organizations that really do not care about the fighters. To be honest, being a fighter myself, I realized at the end of the day no matter how much money you put into it, if fighters don’t show up then the promotion doesn’t exist. The promoters are treating fighters like crap. We want to make sure the fighters feel appreciated. At the end of the day, without them we cannot have a show.
TTC- Why Columbus for your inaugural event? D&D- Devin-We both have strong ties to Columbus. I have my MBA from The Ohio State University. Due to the wrestling culture that exists here, I believe Ohio as a whole has some of the best MMA fans in the world. Dorian has been training here for quite awhile. Dorian-This is where I started my MMA career following Thai Boxing. I trained here with Mark Coleman and Kevin Randleman. We wanted it to be in Ohio because of the support here. You really don’t find that kind of support anywhere else.
TTC- Are you still planning on competing Dorian? Dorian- I’m planning on competing but probably not in MMA. Most likely back in Thai Boxing possibly in future Shine Shows.
TTC- Speak about the card. DD- Antonio Mendes vs. Antwain Britt will be a great fight. Luke Zachrich vs. Marcus Reynolds should be really good stand up match. We have a strong card from top to bottom.
TTC- What are your plans for future locations? DD- We are looking to fight all over, really globally. We are excited about the future.
We will provide a complete preview and review of the event in upcoming weeks. For ticket information and the complete fight card visit: www.shinefights.com
