Strikeforce is a relatively new MMA promotion and in order to put their name out their, as well as the names of up-and-coming fighters, Showtime periodically airs smaller broadcasts branded as their ShoMMA Strikeforce Challengers series. The May 21st fight card is headlined by a superior wrestler in Matt Lindland and should be an entertaining night of fights. ShoMMA: Strikeforce Challengers 8 begins at 11 pm ET on Friday night on Showtime.
Pat Healy vs Bryan TraversKicking off the main card will be a lightweight bout between Pat Healy and Bryan Travers. Healy has 37 fights under his belt, many of them against some top talent. Healy is a solid striker with better than average submissions. Travers was an NCAA wrestler with only one loss to his name. I’ll take Healy in this one due to his vast experience with some of the top fighters in mixed martial arts. Prediction: Healy wins by submission
Tarec Saffiedine vs Nate MooreTarec Saffiedine takes on Nate Moore in a welterweight matchup next on the card. The Belgian Saffiedine has fought all over the world and has amassed an impressive 8-2 record while showing a solid set of submissions. Saffiedine is squaring off against Nate Moore, a young fighter with a 6-1 record. I am taking Moore in this fight because he has the power in his hands to end a fight at a moment’s notice. Prediction: Moore wins by knockout
Roger Bowling vs Bobby Voelker
Up next is a welterweight matchup with Roger Bowling squaring off against Bobby Voelker. Bowling hails from Cincinnati and is primarily a striker, with 6 of his 7 fights ending thanks to his powerful fists. Voelker is the more experienced of the two fighters, compiling a 21-7 record thus far in his career. Voelker boasts 13 wins by way of the knockout, so this ought to be a real slugfest. I will take Voelker in this fight because of his edge in experience, as well as his background in jiu-jitsu (he trains with American Jiu-Jitsu). Bowling has finished all of his fights except one in the first round, so the longer the fight lasts, the more the advantage swings in the favor of Voelker. Prediction: Voelker wins by knockout
Tyron Woodley vs Nathan CoyIn yet another welterweight match-up, wrestler Tyron Woodley takes on the experienced Nathan Coy. Woodley is 5-0 inside the cage after a decorated amateur wrestling career at the University of Missouri. While many wrestlers just beginning their fighting careers will adopt the “lay and pray” style of fighting in which they control the opponent and pepper them with short strikes, Woodley has bucked that trend, winning all of his fights thus far by submission. Coy is a seasoned fighter with “big fight” experience under his belt, having won the welterweight title for the Sportfight organization. Coy has fought several mid-level fighters with UFC experience, so he will not be intimidated at all by Woodley. This fight promises to be exciting as both men have the stamina to go the distance. Despite Coy’s edge in experience, I am taking Woodley based on his explosiveness and ground skills. Prediction: Woodley wins by decision
Matt Lindland vs Kevin CaseyIn the headlining fight of the ShoMMA 8 Card, relative unknown Kevin Casey takes on Matt “The Law” Lindland in a middleweight bout. Casey is particularly versed in jiu-jitsu, learning from the best of the best, the Gracies. Casey is no stranger to facing well-known fighters, due to the fact that he took on Ikuhisa Minowa (better known as Minowaman) in his professional debut. Despite the fact that Minowa finished him with punches less than a minute into the second round, Casey has bounced back to score 3 straight wins entering the match with Lindland. Lindland’s area of expertise is his wrestling, in fact Lindland won the Silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games in Greco Roman Wrestling. In addition to his world-class wrestling, Lindland has developed a solid striking game that compliments his wrestling nicely. Lindland has fought a who’s who of MMA, so to speak, with fights against Quentin “Rampage” Jackson, Fedor Emilianenko, Vitor Belfort, and Murillo Bustamante to name a few. Unfortunately for Casey, I think he is being fed to the wolves in this fight against Lindland. “The Law” outclasses Casey in striking, grappling, and overall experience. I look for this one to be short and sweet, with Lindland winning in an explosive fashion. Prediction: Lindland by knockout
