Once again, Strikeforce is putting its rising stars on display for the Showtime viewers to enjoy. This time, the main event is a rematch of the Strikeforce Challengers 8 fight between Roger Bowling and Bobby Voelker. The event takes place this Friday, October 22nd, and should serve as a nice appetizer for the main course of UFC 121 the following night.
Shana Olsen vs. Julia BuddKicking off the card will be a battle between a striker (Shana Olsen) and a relative unknown (Julia Budd). Olsen brings a perfect 4-0 record (including a win over highly-touted Kaitlyn Young) in to this fight, with 2 of her 3 professional victories coming due to her powerful strikes. Budd will have her hands full in this, as she is making her professional debut. Budd has some solid Muay Thai skills (she is the only woman to have defeated Gina Carano in Muay Thai), but I believe that she will come up short against the more experienced fighter. Prediction: Shana Olsen wins by TKO (1st Round)
Billy Evangelista vs. Waachiim SpiritwolfThis bout will be contested at a 165 lb catchweight and Evangelista is going to be the heavy favorite. Along with fighting in his hometown, Evangelista is undefeated at 10-0-1, with decision victories over Nam Phan and Jorge Gurgel. Evangelista has some power in his hands and thrives at grinding out decision victories, as his last 6 victories have come by decision. Spiritwolf, on the other hand, has had his ups and downs and is at a real disadvantage the longer the fight lasts. Spiritwolf has 3 of his 5 career losses by decision and has never really gotten rolling on much of a winning streak. Spiritwolf is a journeyman fighter and shouldn’t be much of a problem for Evangelista. Strikeforce is most likely looking for Evangelista to roll through Spiritwolf as a tune-up, since Evangelista has only fought once in the past year. Prediction: Billy Evangelista wins by TKO (2nd Round)
Lavar “Big” Johnson vs. Virgil ZwickerIt is safe to say that Johnson’s toughest fight in his life will not be the one on Friday against Zwicker. Johnson was shot in the abdomen and chest on July 4 th, 2009 and was in critical condition before stabilizing and eventually returning to mixed martial arts. Johnson has rattled off 6 straight victories, all by TKO or KO, and looks to keep his impressive streak rolling against Zwicker. Zwicker is a proud Native American (Kumeyaay Tribe) fighter that won his first 8 professional bouts. His lone loss came to a much larger fighter in a bout taken on short notice. He has several wins by TKO, but will face a tough step up in competition against Johnson. Though it will be a tough fight to call, I have a feeling that a motivated Lavar Johnson will be too much to handle for Zwicker. Prediction: Lavar Johnson wins by TKO (3rd Round)
Strikeforce Challengers Main Event: Roger Bowling vs. Bobby VoelkerIn a rematch from a previous Challengers card in May, Roger Bowling will take on Bobby Voelker in a heated match that was surrounded by controversy the first time around. In the first matchup, an inadvertent eye poke by Voelker on Bowling sent the fight to the judges scorecards in what is known as a technical decision. Bowling was unable to continue the fight and all three judges scored the bout 29-28 for Bowling, who kept his perfect record intact at 7-0. Bowling is a Cincinnati native and trains out of Team Vision with a handful of other successful fighters. Bowling is a finisher, with his only pro fight to go to decision being his first fight with Voelker. Voelker is a Kansas native and has 30 professional fights under his belt, including a split decision victory over Cory Devala since his last fight against Bowling. Voelker is an experienced fighter with the tools to take a fight the distance. While it is difficult to predict a fight based on common opponents or other factors, it is also difficult to predict the outcome of a rematch. Both fighters inevitably have examined tape of the other and look for the other’s weaknesses. Judging by the fact that Bowling has not been defeated in his professional career, I am going to assume that he will have more of an advantage coming into this fight. Not only has Bowling never been defeated, but he has taken a fight from Voelker before and can look at Voelker’s other 7 previous losses to find a gap in his game. I think that the fight will be decided by whichever fighter sticks to their gameplan better. Prediction: Roger Bowling wins by decision
