Josh Thomson vs. Pat HealyFormer Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh “The Punk” Thomson (16-3, 1 NC) will see his first action of 2010 when he meets UFC veteran Pat “Bam Bam” Healy (23-15) in a lightweight bout on the Strikeforce “Fedor vs. Werdum” main card. Thomson, 31, is a former wrestler who now fights out of the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California. He debuted in 2001, and by September 2003 he was fighting in the UFC. He won two of three in the octagon before deciding to go another direction. He went on to fight for PRIDE and Strikeforce, where he won the title in June 2008 with a victory over Gilbert Melendez. He dropped that title in a rematch with Melendez this past December. He is 7-2 for the Strikeforce promotion. Healy is a St. Louis, Missouri native who trains at the Northwest MMA training camp. He debuted in 2001 and has fought for the WEC, UFC, and IFL among many other promotions. He lost his only UFC bout in August 2006 after being submitted by Anthony Torres at UFC Fight Night 6. He has been on the upswing as of late winning five of his last six including a victory in late-May over Bryan Travers at ShoMMA 8. Prediction – Thomson submission
Cung Le vs. Scott SmithFormer Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Cung Le (6-1) will be looking for revenge in his main card rematch with Scott Smith (17-6, 1 NC) at Strikeforce “Fedor vs. Werdum.” Le, 38, is a South Vietnamese former kickboxer who now trains MMA with American Kickboxing Academy. He kick boxed as a pro from 1998-2004 and then went on to make his MMA debut in 2006. He has fought exclusively for Strikeforce winning his first six before dropping his most recent bout against Smith. He won the middleweight title in March 2008 via TKO over Frank Shamrock but had to vacate it due to inactivity. Smith, 31, is a Nevada-born striker who now trains in California at the Capital City Fighting Alliance. He debuted in 2001 and fought for the IFC, Gladiator Challenge and WEC where he won ten of his first eleven. He moved into the UFC in 2006 losing at UFC 59 against David Terrell. He re-emerged after a stint on The Ultimate Fighter 4 winning his next bout, but he dropped two more and found himself on the outs. Since his release, he has been in some action-packed fights including winning three of his last four. He won against Cung Le last December at Strikeforce “Evolution.” Prediction – Smith decision
Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos vs. Jan FinneyStrikeforce women’s 145 pound champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (9-1) will make her second title defense at Strikeforce “Fedor vs. Werdum” against organizational newcomer Jan Finney (8-7) in the night’s co-main event. Santos, 24, is a five-year professional who fights out of the Chute Boxe Academy in Brazil and The Arena in San Diego. She lost her very first career bout, and then went on to win her next four before coming to America to fight for Elite XC. After winning two of two in Elite XC, she signed with Strikeforce where she won the title in only her second fight by TKO’ing Gina Carano. She recently made her first title defense in January and defeated Dutch grappler Marloes Coenen by 3rd round TKO. Finney is an Ohio-born fighter who made her professional debut in 2004 for Hook-n-Shoot. She has also fought in the King of the Cage, Bodog Fight, Sho XC, PFC, MMA Big Show, C3, and Freestyle Cage Fighting organizations before signing with Strikeforce this year. She won three of her first five career bouts before losing four consecutive in 2007. She has got back on track lately by winning four in a row including a split decision over Adrienne Jenkins at FCF 40 in late March. Prediction – Santos TKO
Strikeforce Main Event: Fedor Emelianenko vs Fabricio WerdumStrikeforce Heavyweight contender Fedor Emelianenko (32-1, 1 NC) will make his claim for a title shot at the appropriately named “Fedor vs. Werdum” in the main event against Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Fabricio Werdum (13-4-1). Emelianenko, 33, is a Sambo master who fights out of the Russian-based Red Devil Sport Club. He made his professional debut in May of 2000 and fought his first twelve bouts for the Rings organization. He then fought primarily for PRIDE from June 2002 until December 2006 winning the PRIDE Heavyweight Title and going undefeated (14-0, 1 NC). After PRIDE closed their doors, he went on to fight one bout each for the Bodog Fight and Yarennoka promotions. He became this first WAMMA World Heavyweight Champ with his Affliction victory over Tim Sylvia. He debuted for Strikeforce in November 2009 against Brett Rogers and won via 2nd round TKO. He hasn’t lost a bout in an astounding 29 consecutive fights. Werdum, 32, is a black belt in both Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo who trains at the famous Chute Boxe Academy. He debuted in 2002 and went 4-0-1 before his February 2005 PRIDE debut. He fought six times for PRIDE winning four of the six in the year and a half tenure with the organization. He transitioned into the UFC in April 2007 and went 2-2, defeating Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera. He abruptly left the organization in October 2008 after UFC 90, and has fought and won twice for Strikeforce. He defeated Mike Kyle in August and Antonio Silva in November in his most recent action.
