Strikeforce put on their second major event in June when they chose to co-promote with M-1 Global and host Fedor vs Werdum on June 26, 2010 for another Showtime televised event in San Jose, California. The fight card for the Strikeforce: Fedor vs Werdum on June 26 was a solid one featuring two former Strikeforce Champions in action and a main event featuring Fedor Emelianenko versus Fabricio Werdum. The final Strikeforce Fedor vs Werdum results have been posted below. Fans can also find historic Strikeforce results online here at ProFighting-fans.com.

Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum took place this past Saturday night at HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. In the span of two hours, we saw “Cyborg” Santos decimate another female fighter challenger, Cung Le avenge his only loss in the Strikeforce cage, and Fabricio Werdum become the first man to “defeat” Fedor Emelianenko in what is sure to go down as a historic night in MMA.

8 fighters entered the Strikeforce cage hoping to fulfill their dreams and propel themselves to the top of their respective divisions. Some succeeded, some failed. Here is where those 8 mixed martial artists stand following Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum.

Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum - Main Card

Josh Thomson vs. Pat Healy

Loser: Pat Healy – In a fight where many fans and media didn’t give him a chance, Healy was a minute away from pulling off the upset. Healy utilized his great wrestling and solid submission defense to wear out the former Strikeforce lightweight champion, and were it not for a critical mistake at the end of the fight, Healy tried to spike Thompson into the mat thereby opening up his neck for a rear naked choke, he would have won on the judges’ scorecards. Dropping down from 170 seems to be a good career choice for Healy, as his significant strength advantage at 155 makes him an even more dangerous fighter. At only 26, he could be threatening for the Strikeforce Lightweight Title within the next year or so.

Performance Grade: B-

Winner: Josh Thomson – In a night that would eventually end with one of, if not the, biggest upsets In MMA history, Thomson did a great job of avoiding being upset himself. Unable to stop Healy’s takedowns, Thomson was forced to try to win off his back. He was aggressive from the guard throughout the fight, and it finally paid of in the waning minutes of the match when he was able to get Healy’s back and sink in the rear naked choke. In a division that is full of great wrestlers, Thomson will have to continue to make strides in his takedown defense if he wants to be among the elite. A rematch with Gilbert Melendez is in his near future, but whether he’s ready for it, with only two fights in two years, is another story.

Performance Grade: B

Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos vs. Jan Finney

Loser: Jan Finney – Finney was utterly decimated in one of the most courageous performances of the year. Even though Santos kept knocking Finney down with jabs and right crosses, Finney kept getting back up and asking for more. While many were angry with the female referee Kim Winslow for not stopping the fight sooner, I think she did a terrific job. Finney was still intelligently defending herself throughout the fight and kept fighting back every time Winslow asked for her to do so. Finney’s striking was by no means technical, her skills by no means well rounded, but her heart was worthy of the best fighters in the world. Finney had a puncher’s chance to win the fight, and she gave herself as many opportunities as she could, until her body, not her mind, said no more.

Performance Grade: A (for effort)

Winner: Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos – Santos is easily the greatest women’s fighter of all time, but until another great women’s fighter steps up, she won’t have the chance to show what she’s truly made of. Santos displayed a solid chin against Finney, taking a few tough shots early on, and then proceded to make a striking clinic of a title fight. If I were Gina Carano, I’d stay as far away from the cage as well, because another fight with Cyborg could end any future Carano has as an actress.

Performance Grade: A

Cung Le vs. Scott Smith

Loser: Scott Smith – Smith came into the fight with one thing in mind, knocking Cung Le out in the first round. When the initial storm of Smith had been quelled, he was there for the taking. Scott Smith is the type of fighter who never gives up and always gives a great performance entertainment wise, but at 29, Scott has fallen into the pattern of relying solely on landing that one “lucky” punch. If he would dedicate himself to becoming a more well-rounded fighter, Smith could easily be one of the top fighters in Strikeforce’s 185-pound division, but as it stands, he is nothing more than a novelty.

Performance Grade: C

Winner: Cung Le – At the tender age of 38, Cung Le put on one of the best performance of his MMA career. His punches had pop, his kicks had explosion, as Cung Le seemingly brought the special effects from Hollywood to the Strikeforce cage. It was an emotional fight for Cung Le, having suffered his first loss to Smith in this past December at Strikeforce Evolution, and one that will more than likely define his career. With movie roles flowing in, and more children to feed (Le’s wife had just given birth to another baby this past weekend), MMA may eventually take a backseat in Cung Le’s life. But before it does, Cung Le is expected to take part in the 8-man tournament for Strikeforce’s Middleweight Title. If he is as prepared for the tournament as he was for the fight with Smith Saturday night, he is easily one of the favorites to take the tournament. But with fighters like Nick Diaz, Jacare Souza, and Dan Henderson expected to participate, Le is in for the biggest test of his fighting career.

Performance Grade: B+

Strikeforce Main Event: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Fabricio Werdum

Loser: Fedor Emelianenko –No doubt about it, this was the biggest upset of the year, and quite possibly the biggest upset in MMA history. Leading up to the fight there were signs a plenty that this could be the night Fedor loses for the first time legitimately, from the extra fat on his belly to the board shorts at the weigh-in, to the echoing talks of retirement, something was in the air. And sure enough, when Fedor stepped into the Strikeforce cage with his cleanly shaven head, something looked amidst with the fighter who seemed to be in a different mental state than usual.

After catching and dropping Werdum with a nice uppercut, Fedor smelled blood, and instead of fighting like the god everyone had been making him out to be, Fedor fought like an animal, an animal blinded by the scent of blood. Ignoring the BJJ pedigree of his opponent, Fedor practically dove into Werdum’s armbar, and all but left his head to be choked in the triangle. It was a big loss for Fedor, one though, that seemingly lifted the burden of god-hood off his shoulders and thereby freed the man to be human once again. M-1 Global has already made the statement that Fedor plans to have his next, and last fight on his current Strikeforce contract, in the early Fall of 2010. His opponent, given the timetable, will either be Werdum, or someone along the lines of Josh Barnett and Antonio Silva. Overeem vs. Fedor will have to wait, and could possibly end up as just another dream match MMA fans never got to see.

Performance Grade: C

Winner: Fabricio Werdum – In thirty years, if MMA continues to grow and prosper worldwide, Fabricio Werdum will be the answer to the trivia question, “Who was the first fighter to legitimately defeat Fedor Emelianenko.” By defeating Fedor in all of 69 seconds, Fabricio Werdum etched his name into the annals of MMA history. It may have been an anomaly, if the two were to fight 10 times, Werdum may only win once, but the reality of it is that in the one fight that did happen, Werdum choked out the #1 fighter in the world. With this win, Werdum will rise in the heavyweight rankings from #9 to a position in the Top 5. But with a rematch with Fedor imminent, and a possible collision with “The Demolition Man” Alistair Overeem on the horizon, this may be the last time we see Fabricio Werdum in the Top 5 of the heavyweight rankings. Of all the men that could have been the first to unseat “The Last Emperor”, Fabricio Werdum was the best man for the job. A humble fighter, who knows where he and Fedor truly stand in the MMA world. Had a fighter like Brock Lesnar or Alistair Overeem been the first to defeat Fedor, they might have made a mockery of it with their immaturity and insecurity, but Fabricio Werdum handled the monumental deed with the modesty and grace of a true mixed martial artist.

Performance Grade: A
