Kerry Vera tops Kim Couture at Strikeforce Challengers V
As predicted, these ladies brought in nice ratings on the Strikeforce Challengers V card that aired Saturday night on Showtime. This was by no means your average female MMA match, as the hype surrounding Brandon's loss by judges decision in last Saturday's UFC 105 made it as if something great would occur between the battle of the wives. As if there was something to prove here I just knew these women would go all out in this match and that's exactly what happened.
The first round Kim connected with Kerry striking her in the face with a punch or two and when she backed off Kerry for a few seconds it must've hit Kerry to the core and she just unloaded on Kim. Vera quickly landed two powerful knees to Couture's body while pressing her up against the cage and followed suit with numerous left and right blows to Kim's head. The referee stopped the fight at exactly 3:35 in that first round in favor of Vera by TKO (strikes).
While Vera in her post-fight interview stated "the first punch she hit me with I was like ooh, wake up time to go but I came back." This now makes Kerry 2-0 and there's talk about a possible future match with her and Sarah Kaufmann in the works. I have a feeling Kerry will continue to make a name for herself, she is committed to her training and in preparing for this match she was also training with Brandon in preparation for his bout with Randy. As for Kim, critics are saying she may never fight again but that remains to be seen just yet, she has proved she's tough and appears to have the desire to be an MMA contender. Perhaps longer training prior to her next bout (if there is one) will end victorious for Kim in the future. Congrats to both ladies for putting on a great show!
