UFC 114: Todd Duffee - “All in Record Time”

Todd Duffee to take on Mike Russow at UFC 114 on May 29

Todd Duffee (6-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) has only one UFC bout to his credit, but with all of the attention that he is currently receiving, you would think that he is the next coming of Brock Lesnar. Duffee disposed of Tim Hague in 7-seconds, a record for the fastest KO in UFC history, to earn a victory in his UFC 102 debut. While Duffee is without doubt one of the organizations brightest prospects, he can’t be expected to dismantle all of his future opponents with that much of ease.

Duffee’s next challenge will be in the form of former wrestler, Mike Russow at UFC 114 on May 29th. Duffee, again, should be a favorite, although Russow will not be as easy to overpower. Russow is a very skilled all around fighter in his own right, who also earned a victory in his organizational debut (UFC 102 unanimous decision over Justin McCully).

Still not much is known about Duffee, but he does look to be solid in the stand-up, an area that he will have to excel in to earn the victory. While Russow will be looking for the shoot and an eventual takedown, it may be in Duffee’s interest to try and pick him apart on his feet. Russow is going to be difficult to put away, but if he can wear him down, he may force him into making a mistake.

If Russow does get a solid takedown and is able to take top position, it may be a different story. Russow is a strong, durable, and intelligent fighter, so look for him to try and go this route. Duffee, however, will not be a pushover on the canvas; he is also an accomplished grappler. He wrestled at the University of Georgia and now trains with some top heavyweights, like Frank Mir, at Xtreme Couture. The ground fight may slightly favor Russow, but don’t count Duffee out on the mat.

For his second UFC bout, Duffee has a great deal of momentum behind him. He is all over the internet giving interviews, on magazine covers, and even a character on the 2010 version of the UFC’s video game, and all of this after 7-seconds of fighting inside the octagon. This should be an entertaining bout, one that at least on paper, should go Duffee’s way. With that in mind, it’s important to remember that he is still a young developing fighter. With a victory over a veteran fighter like Russow, he may make people forget about how young he is and instead remember how dangerous he is.
