Editor's Picks: UFC 118 - Edgar vs Penn 2Editor-in-Chief Scott Dryden chimes in on Saturday's UFC 118 fights including the main event rematch between Frankie Edgar & BJ Penn
UFC 118 is creating a lot of buzz, likely for the wrong reasons. Although Couture vs. Toney is certainly intriguing, the fact is Edgar vs. Penn in a rematch for the UFC Lightweight Title is more appealing. Even with two very hyped fights, the 118 card still has plenty to offer including a very good match-up between Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard - where the winner will likely face the winner of Edgar and Penn. What will happen? My predictions:
UFC 118 Picks:
Main Event: Lightweight Title Fight Frankie Edgar vs. BJ Penn: In their first fight Edgar used his quickness to stay away from Penn’s efficient hands which resulted in a stunning upset. Edgar is very talented and skilled in all facets but this time he will face a motivated Penn. Yes, Penn should always be motivated but that hasn’t been the case throughout his career. Penn will use his ground game and will be more aggressive on his feet to regain his title. BJ Penn via submission 3rd round
Randy Couture vs. James Toney: The bout is being billed as MMA vs. boxing but the fact is both fighters are far past their prime. However, Toney is clearly the best boxer to ever step foot in the cage and is very motivated. Despite that he hasn’t competed in a major fight since January of 2007 where he lost to Samuel Peter via UD (some would argue his bout against Hasim Rahman was a big fight in July of 2008). Toney has a lot on the line but will not be able to back up his words against the 47 year old Randy Couture. Couture will use his wrestling skills to take Toney to the ground where he will panic and submit in quick fashion. Couture via TKO 1st round
Demian Maia vs. Mario Miranda: Once thought of as the next big jiu-jitsu phenomena to hit the UFC’s Octagon, Maia fell on his face, literally, versus Nate Marquardt then was outclassed by Anderson Silva. The slick submission artist will have his hands full against talented striker Mario Miranda. Miranda is a very dangerous fighter who will look to unleash on Maia. Maia via submission due to a triangle choke 2nd round
Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard: A match-up worth of main event status features the lethal striking and submission game of Kenny Florian versus the hard nosed wrestling of Maynard. Florian will have a length advantage but Maynard is always good at closing the distance with his ever improving hands. This should be a great fight between two of the best lightweights in the world. Maynard via split decision
Marcus Davis vs. Nate Diaz: Marcus Davis is very good on his feet but will have his hands, and possibly his chin, full with the rangy Nate Diaz. Davis is one tough customer but Diaz will be better on the ground and his length should neutralize Davis’ hands. Nate Diaz via UD
