Twenty-three years old is young, and usually a time when up and coming mixed marital artists are just finding their way into the UFC. But for Jon Jones, 23-years old is when he will receive his first chance to battle for the UFC Light-Heavyweight title when he faces veteran striker Mauricio Rua in the main event of this Saturday’s UFC 128.

Some think that Jones’ time will come but right now he is too inexperienced to collect one of the most prestigious belts in all of MMA. Others think that he is ready for that title and will prove it when given the chance this weekend. There is only one way to find out, put them in the octagon and see what happens.

Is Jones ready for an opponent the caliber of Mauricio Rua? After all, he has defeated the likes of Stephan Bonnar, Vladimir Matyushenko, Brandon Vera, and Ryan Bader, but Rua however, is the next level. Each time he faced one of those opponents, the question arose as to whether or not he was ready for the challenge. Each time (minus his DQ loss to Matt Hamill), Jones shut the doors on the doubters with a convincing win.

When the two elite Light-Heavyweight’s meet in the octagon this Saturday, one of two things will happen. First, Jones may bulldoze right through Shogun with ease, or second, Rua will provide him some much needed competition. Either way, if Jones is to be successful, he will likely do it from the ground on top position. “Bones” matches up well with Rua, but he holds a distinct advantage when the fight hits the ground. His best chance to take the belt will be to convert one of his double leg takedowns and bash Rua’s face in with his razor sharp elbows.

Which ever way you want to look at this fight, Jones is in a win/win situation. A victory over Rua places Jones in the driver’s seat with unlimited potential for the future. A loss in the UFC 128 main event nets him some valuable championship experience for an almost certain second title run down the road. The future is bright for Jon Jones, so win or lose; it’s an opportunity that will benefit him in the near future.
