UFC 107 Predictions: Preliminary Card

Welterweight- Kevin Burns vs. TJ Grant:

Burns is 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the UFC. The UFC wasted little time with Burns throwing him into the fire. He defeated Roan Carneiro and Anthony Johnson then lost in a rematch with Johnson and lost an absolute war with Chris Lytle. Grant is 14-3 overall and 1-1 in the Octagon. This will be an interesting battle but Burns is an animal. Burns via KO in the third round.

Welterweight- DaMarques Johnson vs. Edgar Garcia:

Johnson’s last bout was a loss to James Wilks as he competed in the final of The Ultimate Fighter Season 9. Johnson is athletic and has some talent but struggles to put it all together. Garcia is 7-1 with his lone loss in his UFC debut to Brad Blackburn. Johnson will use his athletic ability to get his first win inside the Octagon. Johnson via TKO due to strikes in the second round.

Middleweight- Rousimar Palhares vs. Lucio Linhares:

Palhares is simply a beast. He holds a career record of 9-2 (2-1) in the UFC. At UFC 88 Rousimar gave legend Dan Henderson all he wanted in a loss via UD. Linhares has spent significant time competing in M1-Global. He holds a career record of 13-4. Watching film on Lucio I can see a bright future for him but he will not be able to handle Palhares. Palhares will control the ground and land heavy strikes from the mount. Palhares via TKO due to strikes in the second round.

Welterweight- Johny Hendricks vs. Ricardo Funch:

Both fighters are undefeated coming into the bout with Funch making his UFC debut. Hendricks power and strong wrestling skills will overwhelm Funch. Hendricks via TKO due to strikes (ground and pound) in the second round.

Lightweight- Matt Wiman vs. Shane Nelson:

An intriguing match-up between two guys who desperately need a win. A loss by Wiman may send him out of the UFC. Nelson is 2-1 inside the Octagon and shows a lot of promise. Wiman’s size and strength will be the difference. Wiman via UD.

Middleweight- Alan Belcher vs. Wilson Gouveia:

A very good match-up between two very talented fighters who are both coming off losses. Gouveia’s stand up skills will be the difference as he forces Belcher to give up his back. Gouveia via submission due to a Rear Naked Choke in the second round.

UFC 107 Predictions: Main Card

Heavyweight- Paul Buentello vs. Stefan Struve:

Paul Buentello, known as the headhunter, hasn’t competed in the UFC’s Octagon since 2006 when he faced Gilbert Aldana at UFC 57. Since then he has fought in Strikeforce and Affliction. Buentello’s physique isn’t impressive but his heavy hands certainly are. He will hunt the head of Struve but may have a hard time reaching it as Struve stands in at 6’11”. The Skyscraper is another Dutch style kick boxer who is very dangerous on his feet. He is 18-3 overall and 2-1 in the UFC with both of his victories coming by way of submission. It will take Buentello a while to find his distance and in the process he will eat plenty of jabs and kicks but in the end The Headhunter will find his mark. Buentello via TKO due to strikes in the third round.

Lightweight- Kenny Florian vs. Clay Guida:

Quite simply a great match-up between two of the greats in the division. This fight in and of itself makes the PPV worth purchasing. K-Flo is coming off a loss to Penn for the title at UFC 101 in a fight he was surprisingly dominated in throughout. In Clay Guida’s last fight he lost via split decision to Diego Sanchez at The Ultimate Fighter Season 9 Finale. In that bout Guida took several big time shots that would have ended most fights. With blood spewing and long hair swaying, he managed to survive and dish out his own punishment. I’ve never saw anyone with more energy and passion than Clay Guida. Florian will attempt to slow the pace and make it a tactical fight while Guida will apply a full court press. A conflict of styles with the winner likely being the fighter who dictates tempo. Guida will once again ignite the crowd into a frenzy but Kenny Florian’s overall game will get the victory. K-Flo wins via UD.

Welterweight- Jon Fitch vs. Mike Pierce:

Jon Fitch is simply one of the best welterweights in the world but doesn’t get near the credit he deserves. Fitch holds a career record of 20-3 and is 10-1 in the Octagon of the UFC. Fitch’s only loss was a war against Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 87. Mike Pierce is 10-2 having fought in the WEC and various other organizations. Pierce’s lone appearance in the UFC was a win over Brock Larson at The Ultimate Fight Night 19. Pierce has not fought the level of competition of a Jon Fitch. He will find that out very quickly as Fitch will dominate from start to finish. Fitch wins via TKO due to strikes in the 2nd round.

Heavyweight- Frank Mir vs. Cheick Kongo:

A tremendous match-up with plenty on the line. This will be Frank Mir’s first appearance in the cage since being destroyed by Brock Lesnar at UFC 100. In that bout Mir was in great condition but could not overcome the sheer strength of Lesnar. Kongo is now 14-5-1 following a bad performance against Cain Velasquez at UFC 99. Cheick Kongo supporters will point out that he didn’t have enough time to prepare for Cain as the fight was scheduled late. Cheick is a physical presence and a tremendous athlete who is a lethal striker. Although Frank Mir’s hands looked much better against Minotauro Nogueira at UFC 92, Kongo is much longer and quicker than Nog. For Mir to win he will have to go to his bread and butter, the ground game. Kongo has looked lost when on his back and would suffer the same fate if Mir controls the pace of the fight. Mir will take some heavy shots but finally will insert his will and dominate on the ground. Unlike Velasquez, Mir is very good at finishing fights on the ground. He will grab an arm and finish the fight early in the third round.

UFC 107 Main Event: BJ Penn vs Diego Sanchez - UFC Lightweight Championship Bout

BJ Penn has proven time and time again that he is the greatest lightweight in the history of the sport. He is tremendous on the ground and has improved his standup dramatically over his career. Since dropping down to 155 pounds, Diego Sanchez has went 2-0 with victories over Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida. The Guida victory was an all-time classic. Both fighters are very confident and bring a bravado to the cage. Each are very good on the ground and in the stand-up. The key to the fight is that it’s scheduled for five rounds. Penn has been in the championship rounds and knows how to win them. Sanchez will be in excellent condition and has never been stopped but doesn‘t know the grind of a title fight. Sanchez will win the early rounds but Penn will survive the onslaught and win the fight via a Rear Naked Choke in the 5th round.
