The UFC returns makes a trip to Australia with an impressive UFC 110 fight card featuring a main event of undefeated Cain Velasquez versus MMA Heavyweight legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. The main card for UFC 110 also includes Wanderlei Silva taking on Michael Bisping while both Ryan Bader and George Sotiropoulos take a large step up in competition with Bader facing Keith Jardine and Sotiropolous facing Joe Stevenson. UFC 110 is available on Pay-Per-View on Saturday, February 20, 2010 from Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia.
UFC 110 Predictions: Preliminary Card
James Te-Huna vs. Igor PokrajacNew Zealand native James Te-Huna (11-4) will make his octagon debut against UFC sophomore Igor Pokrajac (21-6), a fellow training partner of the legendary Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, when the two meet at UFC 110. The light-heavyweight bout will be a part of the preliminary portion of the Sydney, Australia card. Both fighters are trying to record a victory in order to stay in the UFC’s regular rotation. Te-Huna debuted in April 2003 and fought in small Australian organizations where he eventually built a mediocre 6-4 record with losses to notables James Lee and Hector Lombard. He has turned it around lately winning five straight, including the last three in the CFC light-heavyweight grand prix. His last fight was a 2:21 KO of UFC veteran Anthony Perosh in August to become the grand prix winner. Pokrajac, 31, started his professional career in February 2003 and over the next six years, piled up a 21-5 record fighting in his homeland of Croatia, as well as Slovenia, Poland, Holland, and the Czech Republic. He has fought UFC veteran Assuerio Silva and M-1 Challenge’s Mamed Khalidov, however lost to both opponents along his journey into the UFC. In September at UFC 103, Pokrajac earned his opportunity at UFC glory against longtime UFC fighter, Vladimir Matyushenko. The bout was slow moving and lacked action eventually resulting in Matyushenko coming out on top of a unanimous decision. Prediction – Te-Huna over Pokrajac via TKO
CB Dollaway vs. Goran ReljicUndefeated Croatian striker, Goran Reljic (8-0), will make his middleweight debut against The Ultimate Fighter 7 runner-up C.B. Dollaway (9-2). This 185-pound fight is scheduled to take place on the preliminary portion of the UFC 110 event. Dollaway comes in after defeating UFC rookie Jay Silva at UFC Fight Night 19 in September. Reljic, who has battled injuries as of late, will fight for the first time since May 2008 when he knocked out Wilson Gouveia at UFC 84. C.B. “Doberman” Dollaway, 26, benefited from significant amateur experience as an Arizona State wrestler, one of Division I’s top programs. He debuted in MMA in 2006 and went on to win all of his first six bouts fighting in organizations such as Rage in the Cage, the IFO, and HD Net Fights. After his TUF 7 experience ended with a loss to Amir Sadollah at the Finale, Dollaway posted back-to-back victories before falling to Tom Lawlor at UFC 100. The Arizona Combat Sports fighter earned the much-needed unanimous decision victory over Silva for his third win in five UFC opportunities. Reljic, 25, a Gracie Barra UK fighter, began his professional career almost six years ago in his native Croatia. He would go on to win his first seven fights (6 stoppages) while continuing to fight in Croatian as well as Slovenian and Dutch-based promotions. His UFC 84 victory over Gouveia won him a “Knockout of the Night” bonus in his first fight on a 3-fight contract. Prediction – Reljic over Dollaway via KO
Chris Lytle vs. Brian FosterVeteran welterweight Chris “Lights Out” Lytle (27-17-5) will take on upstart Brian Foster (13-4) in a UFC 110 preliminary bout. Lytle is back in action after 8 months on the sideline. He defeated Kevin Burns at The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale via unanimous decision in June. Foster defeated Brock Larson at UFC 106 in November in his most recent action. Lytle, 35, in his eleventh year as a professional, fought six times in the UFC from 2000-2005 but won just twice. He reappeared on The Ultimate Fighter 4 “The Comeback” and earned a runner-up finish to Matt Serra. Since re-joining the UFC elite in 2006 his results have been mixed. He is a 4-time “Fight of the Night,” 1-time “Submission of the Night” and 1-time “KO of the Night” bonus award winner. He has been awarded three straight “Fight of the Night” awards; however he only came out a winner in two of those bouts. Foster, 25, became a pro in 2006 and went on to win twelve of his first fifteen bouts spread out in several Southwest and Midwest promotions. In his UFC 103 debut, Foster went back and forth with Ricky Story before succumbing to an arm triangle choke midway through the 2 nd round; he was awarded for his “Fight of the Night” effort with a performance bonus. In his next fight, Foster overwhelmed UFC veteran Brock Larson before finishing him off with a well placed uppercut and ground and pound strikes for a 2nd round TKO. Prediction – Lytle over Foster via decision
Stephan Bonnar vs. Krzysztof SoszynskiThe Ultimate Fighter 1 runner-up Stephan “The American Psycho” Bonnar (11-6) will try and rebound from back-to-back losses when he takes on Krzysztof “The Polish Experiment” Soszynski (18-9-1) in a preliminary bout at UFC 110. Bonnar’s last fight was at UFC 100 in July where Mark Coleman put him on his back and ground out a unanimous decision. Soszynski lost at UFC 102 in August by unanimous decision against Brandon Vera in his most recent action. Bonnar, 32, only had seven fights to his credit when catching his break in the TUF 1 house. Since his runner-up finish and monumental bout with Forrest Griffin in 2005, “The American Psycho” has been riding the fine line between mediocre and sub-par with a 5-4 organizational record. He has been on the wrong side of back-to-back unanimous decisions, first against Jon Jones and then Coleman. He does hold notable victories over James Irvin, Keith Jardine, and Eric Schafer. Soszynski, 32, is a proud Team Quest-trained fighter who has also appeared in Strikeforce, IFL, and HD Net Fights events prior to appearing on The Ultimate Fighter 8. His UFC career got off to a steady start by winning fights against Shane Primm, Brian Stann, and Andre Gusmao, two of which earned him “Submission of the Night” bonuses. Vera’s speed and explosiveness was a little too much for “The Polish Experiment” at UFC 102, his first loss in the octagon. Prediction – Bonnar over Soszynski via decision
Elvis Sinosic vs. Chris HasemanIn what should be a crowd pleaser, fellow Australians Elvis “King of Rock and Rumble” Sinosic (8-11-2) and Chris Haseman (20-16) meet in a Light-Heavyweight bout on the preliminary card at UFC 110. Both are UFC veterans, although Sinosic has seen most of the action between the two fighters. This will be his eighth fight inside the octagon, whereas Haseman will enter the octagon for just the second time. Sinosic, 38, is a true MMA journeyman who has over thirteen years of professional experience to his credit. He joined up with the UFC at Dana White’s first event as President (UFC 30) in February 2001. He would fight seven times over the next six years for the organization and although he was loyal, he didn’t have much success winning only one of those fights. His career highlights included losing to Tito Ortiz at UFC 32 for the Light-Heavyweight belt and winning “Fight of Night” in his UFC 70 loss to Michael Bisping. He hasn’t shied away from tough fights; Sinosic has been in brawls with stars like Evan Tanner, Babalu, Ortiz, Forrest Griffin, Alessio Sakara, and Bisping. He has fought only once since his UFC 70 loss, losing to Paul Cahoon at Cage Rage 24 in December 2007. Haseman, 40, has been fighting since January 1996. He has fought the majority of his career in the Rings organization, however has fought all over the world including ZST, Caged Combat, and the UFC. He has fought Sinosic once before, defeating him in March 1997 via submission. His only UFC fight to date took place in July 2002 at UFC 38 where he lost to Evan Tanner by unanimous decision. He also has been in fights with some of the worlds’ best; Matt Hughes, Fedor Emelianenko, Akihiro Gono, and Murilo Bustamante have all been victorious against Haseman. He was on the losing end of four straight bouts before claiming a victory his last time out in November 2008. Prediction – Sinosic over Haseman via TKO
UFC 110 Predictions: Main Card
Mirko Filipovic vs. Ben RothwellBoth Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic (25-7-2, 1 NC) and his UFC 110 opponent “Big” Ben Rothwell (30-7) need a victory to possibly keep their roster spot in the ultra-competitive heavyweight division. This will be the first bout on the televised pay-per-view broadcast main card. Both Filipovic and Rothwell are coming off of losses, “Cro Cop” lost at UFC 103 and Rothwell at UFC 104. Filipovic, 35, is a longtime PRIDE FC fighter known for his powerful kicks. From 2001 through 2006, “Cro Cop” earned PRIDE victories over Josh Barnett (3), Mark Coleman, and Wanderlei Silva, among others. He joined the UFC in February 2007 at UFC 67 and went 1-2 before returning to Japan for about a year. He won his return fight at UFC 99 but lost in his most recent fight at UFC 103 via 3 rd round submission against Junior dos Santos. Rothwell, 28, is a Wisconsin native who trains under both Miletich Martial Arts and Duke Roufas. He debuted in 2001 and had a great deal of success fighting in promotions such as Extreme Challenge, Superbrawl, and the IFL. From September 2005 through September 2007 he won thirteen straight fights including victories over Roy “Big Country” Nelson, Krzysztof Soszynski, and Ricco Rodriguez. He got his UFC debut in October 2009 at UFC 104, however lost to Cain Velasquez via 2nd round TKO in what was a controversial stoppage. Prediction – Rothwell over Filipovic via TKO
Keith Jardine vs. Ryan BaderLight Heavyweight Ryan Bader (10-0) will get the biggest test of his three-year career when he meets UFC veteran Keith “Dean of Mean” Jardine (15-6-1) in a main card bout at UFC 110. Bader is perfect so far in his UFC career, however has yet to face someone with the knockout power of Jardine. Jardine has lost back-to-back fights and three of his last four. Jardine, 34, fought 3 ½ years in mid-level organizations like Extreme Challenge, Rage in the Cage, King of the Cage, Pancrase and M-1 compiling a 9-1-1 mark. His UFC career began with a semi-finals finish at TUF 2, although he has turned his reality show stint into a fairly steady career. His 5-5 UFC mark includes impressive victories over Wilson Gouveia, Forrest Griffin, Chuck Liddell, and Brandon Vera. He has run into tough times of late, including a KO loss in his most recent fight at UFC 102 against Thiago Silva. Bader, 26, has transitioned from an All-American wrestler at Arizona State University to a successful mixed martial artist. In his short time as a professional, he won seven in a row before getting the opportunity to fight on TUF 8. After winning the TUF 8 tournament, he picked up victories over Vinny Magalhaes, Carmelo Marrero and Eric Schafer. Prediction – Jardine over Bader via KO
Joe Stevenson vs. George SotiropoulosTUF 6’s George Sotiropoulos (11-2) will try and keep his perfect organizational record intact when he welcomes a rejuvenated Joe “Daddy” Stevenson (31-10) to his native Australia for their UFC 110 main card bout. Sotiropoulos has been impressive as both a welterweight (2-0) and a lightweight (2-0) since his arrival to the octagon. Stevenson is back on track since joining Greg Jackson’s camp in New Mexico, winning back-to-back bouts for the first time since 2008. Stevenson, 27, has been listed as a professional fighter for over a decade during which time he has fought in the Bas Rutten Invitational, Rage in the Cage, Gladiators Challenge, and King of the Cage organizations. He defeated Luke Cummo to win the TUF 2 welterweight tournament, however his career as a 170-pounder was short lived. He dropped down to 155 and won four straight earning a title shot against BJ Penn at UFC 80. He was stopped by Penn and then after losing bouts to both Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez, he made a change in his training. Since moving to New Mexico and Jackson’s Submission Fighting, he defeated Nathan Diaz and Spencer Fisher, the latter at UFC 104 in October. Sotiropoulos, 32, is a six-year MMA veteran who trains in Vancouver, Washington at the Fisticuffs Gym. He compiled a 7-2 record fighting in K-1, XFC, Spirit MC, and Shooto through his first couple years as a pro. He was knocked out of the TUF 6 tournament by Tommy Speer but defeated mid-level fighters Billy Miles, Roman Mitchyan, George Roop, and Jason Dent since. His last action was in November at UFC 106 where he used elbows during a 2 nd round submission victory against Dent. Prediction – Stevenson over Sotiropoulos via submission
Wanderlei Silva vs. Micheal BispingWanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva’s (32-10-1, 1 NC) return to the middleweight division will come against Micheal “The Count” Bisping (18-2) in a co-main event at UFC 110. Silva is hoping that a drop in weight will spark a successful run after losing back-to-back fights, one at 205 and another at 195. Bisping is coming off an impressive stoppage at UFC 105 in November against Canadian Denis Kang. Silva, 33, is one of the first MMA superstars, thanks in large to fighting in the early UFC as well as a long run in PRIDE FC. He lost a UFC 28 championship bout against Tito Ortiz and then migrated to Japan where he won both the PRIDE middleweight title and the 2003 PRIDE middleweight grand prix. He held the middleweight title for over five years defeating fighters like Dan Henderson, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, and Ricardo Arona along the way. It was Henderson who knocked Silva out in his last PRIDE fight in 2007 to end his run as the champion. Soon after, PRIDE was bought by the UFC and Silva was one of the prized fighters that came with the deal. His return to the UFC has been rocky, winning once in four fights including a June 2009 UFC 99 unanimous decision against Rich Franklin contested at 195 pounds. Bisping, 30, is an England native who trains out of the famed Wolfslair MMA Academy in Liverpool. His debut was made in April 2004 when within a year and a half, he was 10-0 with championship belts in both the Cage Rage and FX 3 organizations. In June 2006, he won the TUF 3 Light-Heavyweight Tournament in a bout with Josh Haynes. In all, he won his first four at 205 before dropping a bout to Rashad Evans at UFC 78 in November 2007. After his first career loss, “The Count” dropped to 185 where he has gone 4-1, losing only in dramatic fashion to Dan Henderson at UFC 100. He has since rebounded with a “Fight of the Night” performance at UFC 105 via 2 nd round TKO of Denis Kang. Prediction – Silva over Bisping via TKO
UFC 110 Main Event: Cain Velasquez vs Antonio Rodrigo NogueiraCain Velasquez (7-0) will get to prove whether he is ready for a future title shot with a main event bout against Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira (32-5-1, 1 NC) at UFC 110. The winner of this heavyweight contest will likely receive a future title bout. Nogueira fought less than two full months ago at UFC 107 with a decision victory over Randy Couture. Velasquez was in action in October at UFC 104 with a TKO victory over “Big” Ben Rothwell.
Velasquez, 27, is another former Arizona State wrestler who transitioned into MMA with great success. Much of the success is with help from his training camp at American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California. He made his successful pro debut in late-2006 with Strikeforce and won again two months later in the Bodog Fight organization. Two fights were all that the UFC needed to see before signing him to a multi-fight deal in 2008. He compiled three straight TKO victories before winning a unanimous decision bout with Cheick Kongo at UFC 99. His last fight was in October at UFC 104 where he earned his fifth consecutive victory at the expense of Ben Rothwell. Prediction – Nogueira over Velasquez via submission
