UFC 111 Predictions: Preliminary Card

Matthew Riddle vs. Greg Soto

The Ultimate Fighter 7 alum Matthew Riddle (3-1) will try and get back on the winning track against UFC newcomer Greg Soto (7-0) when the two meet on the preliminary card at UFC 111. Riddle is coming off of his first career loss in November at UFC 105 against Brit, Nick Osipczak. Soto has finished five of his seven opponents so far throughout his career including an October submission against Ray Steinbeiss.

Riddle, 24, was a rookie fighter when he appeared on Quinton Jackson’s Team Rampage at The Ultimate Fighter 7. He didn’t win the tournament, however impressed the right people to earn a contract. He went on to win his first three official UFC bouts with victories over Dante Rivera, Steve Bruno, and Dan Cramer. British fighter Nick Osipczak upset Riddle in November at UFC 105 with a 3rd round TKO ending the Pennsylvania-native’s perfect start.

Soto has experience in several different organizations throughout his four-plus years in the sport. He appeared in New Jersey-based Battle Cage Xtreme, Ring of Combat, and CITC organizations prior to signing with the UFC earlier this year. He has finished five of his seven bouts so far in his career. His most recent bout took place in October at the Beatdown at the Bears 5 event where he submitted Ray Steinbeiss via rear naked choke.

Prediction – Soto over Riddle via submission

Rousimar Palhares vs. Tomasz Drwal

Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Rousimar Palhares (10-2) will take on converted middleweight Tomasz Drwal (17-2) in a preliminary bout at UFC 111. Palhares has put together back-to-back victories including a December UFC 107 submission of Lucio Linhares. Drwal made his middleweight debut in September at UFC 103 and was victorious with a submission of Drew McFedries.

Palhares, 30, has been active with mixed martial arts since April 2006 when he made his debut. He jumped around several different Brazilian promotions for about 1 ½ years before making his UFC debut in May 2008. He earned submission of the night honors with his UFC 84 victory over Ivan Salaverry. He suffered his first defeat at UFC 88 in September 2008 with a unanimous decision loss against Dan Henderson, but bounced back with victories over ground specialists Jeremy Horn (UFC 93) and Linhares (UFC 107).

Drwal, 28, is a Polish-born fighter who has over six years of professional experience to his credit. He debuted in 2004 and went on a hot streak winning fourteen of his first fifteen bouts including a 2005 fight over Lucio Linhares. His UFC 75 debut wasn’t as successful, losing to Thiago Silva via TKO. Since his rookie appearance, he has turned in impressive performances by defeating Ivan Serati, Mike Ciesnolevicz, and Drew McFedries.

Prediction – Drwal over Palhares via TKO

Rodney Wallace vs. Jared Hamman

Former college running back and current UFC light-heavyweight, Rodney Wallace (9-1), will meet Vladimir Matyushenko-trained Jared Hamman (10-2) at UFC 111 on the preliminary portion of the card. Wallace lost at the TUF 10 finale in December via unanimous decision against Brian Stann. Hamman was knocked out in 41 seconds at his November UFC 105 debut by Alexander Gustafsson.

Wallace debuted in 2008 and fought for organizations such as Revolution Fight Club, M-1 Challenge, Vengeance Fight Club, and World Martial Arts organizations piling up nine victories without a loss. Among the victories was a September 2009 1 st round submission of Strikeforce veteran Antwain Britt. He made his debut in December at the TUF 10 finale losing a unanimous decision against Brian Stann.

Jared Hamman is a striking specialist who began his fighting career in April of 2006. He battled in Strikeforce, the IFC, Sho XC, and Chaos in the Cage before joining the UFC. He was 9-0 before suffering a loss to Poai Suganuma at an April 2008 Sho XC event. He debuted at UFC 105 but was knocked out when Alexander Gustafsson connected with his strikes early in the 1 st round.

Prediction – Hamman over Wallace via TKO

UFC 111 Predictions: Spike TV Televised Card

Ricardo Almeida vs. Matt Brown

After back-to-back victories in leaving the middleweight division, Ricardo Almeida (11-3) is set to make his welterweight debut against Matt Brown (11-7) in a Spike-TV preliminary bout at UFC 111. Brown has also been impressive as of late, winning his last three bouts including a November UFC 105 TKO of James Wilks. Almeida was in action last August at UFC 101 defeating Kendall Grove via unanimous decision.

Almeida, 33, is a New York-native and Renzo Gracie-trained fighter who has had stints with PRIDE, Pancrase and the UFC since his 2000 debut. He had a 1-2 record the first time around inside the octagon and then left for Japan where he won six in a row. Five victories in Pancrase, including the middleweight crown, and one in PRIDE was immediately followed by a four-year absence from the sport. Upon return, he has since won three of four within the middleweight division, although dropping weight adds another aspect to an already dangerous opponent.

Brown, 29, came into the organization through The Ultimate Fighter 7 and now trains at Warrior Training Center. He debuted in 2005 and fought all over the United States including thirteen fights in less than two years compiling a 7-6 record. After splitting his first two inside the octagon, he converted victories over his next three. He stopped Ryan Thomas at UFC 91, earned a TKO over Pete Sell at UFC 96, and knocked James Wilks out at UFC 105.

Prediction – Almeida over Brown via submission

Nate Diaz vs. Rory Markham

The Ultimate Fighter 5 winner, Nate Diaz (11-5), will make his welterweight debut at UFC 111 against Miletich Martial Arts fighter Rory Markham (16-5). This bout will be part of the Spike-TV preliminary card. Diaz is trying to bring life back to his career after losing three of his final four as a lightweight. Markham has split his pair of UFC bouts to date.

Diaz, 24, is a Cesar Gracie jiu-jitsu fighter from Stockton, California who made his name from The Ultimate Fighter 5 show. Prior to the TUF 5 appearance, he posted a 5-2 record fighting in the WEC, Strikeforce, Pancrase and Warrior Cup organizations. He won five in a row to begin his UFC career, but has since lost three of four including a Fight Night 20 event against Gray Maynard. He has been named submission of the night winner twice and fight of the night winner on three occasions.

Markham, 27, is a Chicago-born fighter with seven years experience involving many mid-level organizations. He won 11 of 12 from June 2004 through November 2006 and posted a 6-2 IFL record as well. However, it was after winning a bout in the Adrenaline organization that he was given his UFC opportunity on the undercard of the “Irvin vs. Silva” Fight Night event. He defeated Brodie Farber at that June 2008 event but lost to Dan Hardy at UFC 95 via KO in his most recent action.

Prediction – Diaz over Markham via decision

UFC 111 Predictions: PPV Main Card

Kurt Pellegrino vs. Fabricio Camoes

Red-hot lightweight Kurt Pellegrino (14-4) is set to take on UFC sophomore Fabricio Camoes (10-4-1) in a preliminary bout at UFC 111. Pellegrino has been victorious in three straight fights including an August UFC 101 bout with Josh Neer that he won via unanimous decision. Camoes made his UFC debut in November at UFC 106 and fought Caol Uno to a majority draw.

Pellegrino, 30, is a New Jersey-native who has been fighting for over eight years now. He debuted in the WEC and also has fought in Reality Fighting, Pancrase, Ring of Combat, Freestyle Combat Challenge and Absolute FC promotions. He debuted at UFC 61 in July of 2006 but lost via submission against Drew Fickett. After losing his third fight in six chances, he went on a run winning three consecutive bouts. He defeated Thiago Tavares, Rob Emerson, and in August, Josh Neer, at UFC 101.

Camoes, 31, is a Brazilian-born fighter who trains at The Arena in San Diego. He debuted in 2000 but showed only mediocre results through his first eight bouts. After going 4-4, he reeled off seven straight victories while fighting in Super Challenge, and Sho XC promotions defeating PRIDE vets, Luciano Azevedo and Jean Silva as well as UFC vet Sammy Morgan. His UFC debut against Caol Uno was highly anticipated however resulted in a majority draw.

Prediction – Pellegrino over Camoes via decision

Jim Miller vs. Mark Bocek

Both Jim Miller (16-2) and Mark Bocek (8-2) will be looking for their fourth consecutive victory when the two meet on the main card of the UFC 111 event in New Jersey. Miller was victorious in January at UFC 108 against Duane Ludwig. Bocek put on a submission of the night performance against Joe Brammer at the TUF 10 finale in December.

Miller, 26, is a New Jersey-based fighter with five years of professional experience with organizations such as Reality Fighting, Ring of Combat, Cage Fury FC, Battle Cage Xtreme, and the IFL. He won eleven of twelve prior to joining the UFC, losing only in a Reality Fighting event against Frankie Edgar in 2006. He won his first two bouts inside the octagon before dropping a March 2009 UFC 96 fight with Gray Maynard. Since that loss, he has put together three straight victories against Mac Danzig, Steve Lopez, and Ludwig.

Bocek, 28, is a Canadian-born Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist who trains in Florida with the American Top Team. He debuted in 2004 and with only four victories under his belt, signed with the UFC. He lost two of his first three fights in the UFC before winning his last three. He defeated Alvin Robinson at UFC 91, David Bielkheden at UFC 97, and then Joe Brammer at the TUF 10 finale.

Prediction – Miller over Bocek via decision

Jon Fitch vs. Ben Saunders

Ben Saunders (8-1-2) will be stepping in for Thiago Alves on the UFC 111 main card against Jon Fitch (21-3, 1 NC) in a bout that should have meaning in finding a future welterweight contender. Fitch was victorious in his most recent bout in December at UFC 107 defeating Mike Pierce via unanimous decision. Saunders upset Marcus Davis at UFC 106 in November with a 1st round KO.

Fitch, 32, is a former Purdue wrestler with eight years of professional fighting experience. He accumulated ten victories in twelve chances while fighting for Reality FC, Hook n Shoot, X-1 and other organizations. He reeled off eight straight victories to begin his UFC career, one as a middleweight and seven as a welterweight. He lost an August 2008 UFC 87 title fight against GSP, but has since won his last three. He has defeated Akihiro Gono, Paulo Thiago, and Mike Pierce in succession. Fitch has gone to decisions in his last six fights.

Saunders, 26, made his debut in May 2004 and carried an undefeated record with him into The Ultimate Fighter 6. After bowing out in the semifinals of TUF 6, Saunders went on to win his first three official UFC bouts before losing at UFC 99 to Mike Swick. He rebounded at UFC 106 with an impressive KO against Boston-native Marcus Davis.

Prediction – Fitch over Saunders via decision

UFC 111 Co-Main Event: Frank Mir vs. Shane Carwin

Frank Mir (13-4) wants to get another crack at heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar, however to do that he must get through undefeated Colorado native, Shane Carwin (11-0). The organizations’ interim heavyweight is up for grabs in this UFC 111 co-main event. Mir is coming in off of an impressive 1 st round submission against Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 in December. Carwin’s last fight was nearly a year ago at UFC 96 where he earned a 1 st round KO of Gabriel Gonzaga.

Mir, 30, is a Las Vegas-native fighter who has almost exclusively fought for his hometown promotion. He began in 2001 and ended up with the UFC in only his third career bout. He won 6 of his first 7 including the vacant heavyweight title at UFC 48 in June 2004. He couldn’t defend the title due to an injury resulting from a motorcycle accident, so Mir had to relinquish the belt. It took him nearly two years to return to the octagon, but he did and lost two of three bouts before finding rebirth and winning three consecutive. Among the three victories included a victory over Brock Lesnar and a victory for the unified heavyweight title against Antonio Nogueira. He lost his belt at UFC 100 in a rematch with Lesnar but looked spectacular in his UFC 107 win over Kongo.

Carwin, 35, is a native of Denver and trains with Greg Jackson’s team in New Mexico as well as Grudge Training Center in Colorado. He debuted in 2005 and fought for solid organizations like the WEC, Ring of Fire, and Art of War winning eight fights without a loss. After a victory over Sherman Pendergarst at Ring of Fire 31 in December 2007, he joined the heavyweight ranks in the UFC. Carwin earned a 1 st round KO over Christian Wellisch at UFC 84, a 1 st round TKO over Neil Wain at UFC 89 and a 1st round KO over Gonzaga at UFC 96 last March.

Prediction – Carwin over Mir via TKO

UFC 110 Main Event: Georges St-Pierre vs Dan Hardy

George St. Pierre (19-2) will defend his welterweight belt for the fourth straight bout against British fighter Dan Hardy (23-6) in the main event at UFC 111. St. Pierre earned a five round unanimous decision over Thiago Alves at UFC 100 in July. Hardy was victorious over Mike Swick in November at UFC 105 via unanimous decision.

St. Pierre, 28, is a successful mixed martial artist who has spent the majority of his professional career fighting in the UFC. He first fought for the title back at UFC 50 against Matt Hughes, losing at the end of the 1 st round from an armbar submission. He bounced back to win five in a row including the welterweight title in a rematch with Hughes at UFC 65 in November 2006. He was surprised at UFC 69 when Matt Serra knocked him out and took his belt. He reclaimed the belt two fights later at UFC 79 in December 2007, again against Matt Hughes. He currently is riding on the strength of a six-fight win streak including his most recent victory at UFC 100 over Alves.

Hardy, 27, is a British fighter who trains at the Nottingham-based Team Rough House. He debuted in 2004 and accumulated a record of 19-6 through four years fighting in organizations such as GCM, CWFC, and 2H2H. He joined the UFC late in 2008 and has won all four of his fights in the octagon. He defeated Akihiro Gono at UFC 89, Rory Markham at UFC 95, Marcus Davis at UFC 99, and most recently, Swick at UFC 105.

Prediction – St. Pierre over Hardy via submission
