In a fight that will surely help draw Pay Per View buys Kimbo Slice returns for his second UFC fight to faces fellow TUF 10 participant Matt Mitrione.
UFC 113 Predictions: Preliminary Card
Jason MacDonald vs. John SalterCanadian-native, Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald (24-13) will make his return to the octagon when he meets John Salter (4-1), an Alabama-based fighter who lost in his UFC Fight Night 20 debut, at UFC 113 in a middleweight bout from the Belle Centre in Montreal, Canada. MacDonald, 34, has been fighting as a professional for well over a decade and is currently affiliated with Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. He began in 1999 and fought for MFC, AFC, KOTC, TKO, UCW, and other organizations before setting foot in the octagon. He was 16-7 and riding the strength of a 4-fight win streak when making his October 2006 UFC debut. He won three of his first four in the octagon but lost four of his last six including his most recent UFC 97 loss to Nate Quarry in April of last year. He is 3-1 since his release winning three consecutive including an April decision victory over another UFC veteran, Matt Horwich. Salter, 25, is a former NAIA wrestling champion who made his MMA debut a little over a year ago. He won his first four bouts fighting in organizations like King of the Cage and Adrenaline where he defeated notables like Roberto Traven, current TUF 11 participant James Hammortree and former TUF contestant Jeremiah Riggs. He made his own UFC debut this January at UFC Fight Night 20 but succumbed to strikes from Gerald Harris and lost via 3rd round TKO. Prediction – MacDonald over Salter via submission
Yoshiyuki Yoshida vs. Mike GuymonUFC veteran, Yoshiyuki “Zenko” Yoshida (11-4) will try and rebound from his UFC 104 loss when he takes on Mike Guymon (11-3-1) on the UFC 113 preliminary card in a welterweight bout. Guymon, like Yoshida, is also coming off of a loss in his last bout; a submission defeat by Rory MacDonald at January’s UFC Fight Night 20. Yoshida, 35, is a Tokyo, Japan native who made his pro debut in 2005 and now spends some of his training camp at Jackson’s Submission Fighting in New Mexico. He lost two of his first three career bouts, but then went on a run that saw him win eight in a row including a victory over Dan Hardy to win the GCM-Cage Force welterweight tournament final. He also defeated War Machine in his UFC 84 debut and then alternated wins and losses. He lost to Josh Koscheck, defeated Brandon Wolff, and then lost to Anthony Johnson in his most recent bout at UFC 104 last October. Guymon, 35, is a former baseball player who runs his own gym in California, Joker’s MMA. Guymon made his debut in 1999 and went on to fight the majority of his career for King of the Cage. He dropped only two of his first fourteen, losing only to UFC veterans Diego Sanchez and Pat Healy. After winning five straight KOTC bouts, he was signed to a four-fight UFC deal. In his first of four fights, he was submitted by MacDonald at UFC Fight Night 20 in January. Prediction – Guymon over Yoshida decision
Joey Beltran vs. Tim HagueA heavyweight clash featuring UFC sophomore, Joey Beltran (11-3), and Canada-native Tim Hague (10-3) will take place at UFC 113 in Montreal, Canada on the preliminary card. Beltran surprised Rolles Gracie at UFC 109 by earning the 2 nd round TKO victory in his most recent action. Hague fought most recently in February losing to Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 109. Beltran, 28, is a San Diego-based fighter who trains with the Blackline Fight Group in California. “The Mexicutioner” made his pro debut in early-2007 for the Strikeforce promotion on the “Young Guns” branch. He lost only three times throughout his first three years of fighting dropping two of those bouts to longtime KOTC heavyweight champ, Tony Lopez. He also appeared for Total Combat, King of the Cage, Gladiator Challenge, Bellator, and 5150 Fight League promotions while posting victories over Wes Combs, Sherman Pendergarst, and Houston Alexander. His UFC 109 debut in February was successful defeating Rolles Gracie via TKO. Hague, 26, is a 4-year professional who is getting one last chance to prove his worth on the biggest MMA stage. He originally fought for KOTC Canada and once for Raw Combat before joining the UFC. He won nine of ten defeating notables Ruben Villareal and Sherman Pendergarst to earn his UFC way. He made a UFC 98 debut in May of last year surprising Pat Barry with a submission victory. He then dropped his next two losing to Todd Duffee in 7-seconds at UFC 102 and then to Tuchscherer at UFC 109. Prediction – Hague over Beltran TKO
TJ Grant vs. Johny HendricksCanadian TJ Grant (15-3) is ready to challenge Team Takedown’s Johny Hendricks (7-0) in a welterweight bout on the UFC 113 preliminary card. Grant won at UFC 107 in December via TKO over Kevin Burns. Hendricks fought and won on that same December card defeating Ricardo Funch via unanimous decision. Grant, 26, is a Nova Scotia, Canada based fighter who boasts 12 submission victories. He began his professional career in April 2006 and fought for ECC, King of the Cage, TKO, and PFP promotions while building a 13-2 record. He defeated tough veterans such as Chad Reiner and Forrest Petz to earn his UFC contract. He debuted at UFC 97 and won a split decision over Ryo Chonan, but then, dropped a decision against Dong Hyun Kim at July 2009’s UFC 100. He did rebound in his most recent fight at UFC 107 with a Knockout of the Night performance against Kevin Burns. Hendricks, 26, is a former NCAA champ and four-time All-American at Oklahoma State University. He made his MMA debut in 2007 and won three bouts before earning a WEC contract. He earned two victories in the WEC and after his WEC 39 Fight of the Night performance; he was brought into the UFC welterweight division. He has showed promise defeating Amir Sadollah at UFC 101 in August 2009 and Ricardo Funch at UFC 107 in December. Prediction – Hendricks over Grant submission
Marcus Davis vs. Jonathan GouletCanadian Jonathan Goulet (22-10, 1 NC) will return to the octagon for the first time in well over a year at UFC 113 facing Marcus Davis (16-6) in a preliminary card bout in the welterweight division. Goulet lost his most recent bout in December 2008 via 33-second KO by Mike Swick. Davis dropped his last two bouts, including a November UFC 106 KO loss against Ben Saunders. Davis, 36, is a Maine-born former pro boxer who now trains MMA at Team Sityodtong in Boston. He made his debut in 2003 and had a 3-2 record when being chosen for TUF 2. He didn’t win the show and was defeated at the finale, but after five straight victories, earned his way back into the octagon. After his return, he won six straight UFC bouts defeating fighters such as Shonie Carter, Pete Spratt, Paul Taylor, and Jess Liaudin. After winning back-to-back fights, he dropped back-to-back fights losing against Dan Hardy and Saunders most recently. Goulet made his pro debut back in 2001 for the Canadian-based UCC organization. He started with a 5-5 record, but piled up eight victories to get a UFC invitation. He won at The Ultimate Fighter 2 finale via TKO over Jay Hieron, but lost two of his next three and found himself on the outside looking in. He was victorious in three of his next four bouts and earned a trip back to the UFC where he earned back-to-back victories before losing in his most recent action at UFC Fight for the Troops against Mike Swick. Prediction – Goulet over Davis TKO
Joe Doerksen vs. Tom LawlorEleven-year professional, Joe Doerksen (44-12), fills in for an injured Tim Credeur at UFC 113 against The Ultimate Fighter veteran Tom Lawlor (6-2, 1 NC) in a middleweight bout on the preliminary card. Doerksen earned a split decision just days ago in a KOTC event over Chad Herrick. Lawlor was defeated by Aaron Simpson this January at UFC Fight Night 20. Doerksen, 32, made his debut in 1999 at the legendary Bas Rutten Invitational, but also fought for promotions such as Extreme Challenge and Rings during his early years. He has had several stints with the UFC throughout his career compiling a less-than-desirable 1-5 mark. His lone victory inside the octagon came at UFC 52 in April 2005 against Patrick Cote. His most recent stint with the UFC ended in early-2008 after dropping back-to-back bouts to Ed Herman and Jason MacDonald. He has since rebounded by winning his last five bouts in organizations such as Sengoku, Canadian Fighting Championships, and King of the Cage. Lawlor, 27, fights out of the Florida-based The Jungle MMA gym. He debuted in March 2007 and won four out of six bouts before The Ultimate Fighter 8. He earned a victory in his TUF 8 finale debut over Kyle Kingsbury in the light-heavyweight division before dropping to middleweight. He then submitted CB Dollaway at UFC 100 in July 2009 in a “Submission of the Night” performance before losing to Simpson this January at UFC Fight Night 20 where he subsequently earned “Fight of the Night.”. Prediction – Lawlor over Doerksen deision
UFC 113 Predictions: PPV Main Card
Patrick Cote vs. Alan BelcherPatrick Cote (13-5) will be making his long-awaited return to the octagon at UFC 113 in a middleweight bout on the main card against Alan Belcher (15-6). Cote hasn’t fought in over a year-and-a-half when he was injured during his middleweight title bout. Belcher was victorious in December at UFC 107 knocking out Wilson Gouveia. Cote, 30, made his debut in 2002 while fighting in his native Canada. After he won his first five career bouts, he found his way into the UFC, but losses to Tito Ortiz, Joe Doerksen, and Chris Leben forced him out once again. He won his next two outside of the organization and then found his way back through The Ultimate Fighter 4. Since his TUF 4 runner-up finish, he has won four of his five bouts losing only after injuring his knee at UFC 90. He has been out of action since that middleweight title bout in October 2008. Belcher, 25, is a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who made his pro debut in 2004. He was victorious in his first seven bouts during a four-month span in 2006. He got the call to the UFC in August 2006 at UFC 62, losing to Yushin Okami, and hasn’t looked back since. He has stayed with the organization for parts of the last four years posting a 6-4 organizational record. He has won three of his last four fights including defeating Gouveia with a 1 st round KO in December at UFC 107. Prediction – Cote over Belcher TKO
Kimbo Slice vs. Matt MitrioneA pair of The Ultimate Fighter 10 heavyweights will slug it out on the UFC 113 main card, as Kimbo Slice (4-1) takes on former NFL player Matt Mitrione (1-0) in what should be a stand-up battle. Slice, 36, was born in the Bahamas and relocated in the Miami-area where he became a famed internet street brawler. He made his debut in November 2007 as the featured fighter for Elite XC. He won his first three bouts defeating Bo Cantrell, Tank Abbott, and James Thompson before getting knocked out by Seth Petruzelli at Elite XC – Heat in October 2008. After getting through the filming of TUF 10, he won his first official UFC bout with a decision victory over Houston Alexander at the finale in December. Mitrione, 31, is a Roufusport fighter who had a short stint in the NFL playing with three separate teams. He came into the TUF 10 tournament with low expectations, however, after advancing into the quarterfinals and defeating Marcus Jones at the TUF 10 finale, his stock has risen in the heavyweight division. He picked Jones apart on his feet and finished him 0:10 into the 2 nd round of their December bout. Prediction – Slice over Mitrione TKO
Sam Stout vs. Jeremy StephensCanadian Sam Stout (15-5-1) will meet Jeremy “Lil Heathen” Stephens (16-5) in an intriguing lightweight bout on the UFC 113 main card. Stout has won his last two bouts including his most recent UFC 108 Fight of the Night performance over Joe Lauzon. Stephens is also coming in off of a victory; he defeated Justin Buchholz at UFC Fight Night 19 last September. Stout, 25, is an Ontario, Canada-born fighter who is now affiliated with Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. He debuted in June of 2003 and after beginning his career with a loss and a draw, went on an 8-fight winning streak to earn a UFC contract. He split a pair of fights in the octagon and then won a pair in the TKO organizations before returning for his second go-around. It wasn’t until after a January 2008 UFC 80 victory over Per Eklund that he was in the organization for good. He has solidified his position with the organization with back-to-back victories including a UFC 108 victory over Joe Lauzon. Stephens, 23, is now training in San Diego, California with The Arena fight team. He debuted in January 2005 and won twelve of thirteen to find his way into the UFC. Stephens was defeated by Din Thomas in his octagon debut and quickly found himself on the outs again. He won one more bout outside of the UFC before returning for good. He dropped back-to-back bouts before winning his most recent fight in September with a TKO over Justin Buchholz. That victory was his thirteenth career TKO/KO victory. Prediction – Stout over Stephens decision
Josh Koscheck vs. Paul DaleyJosh Koscheck (16-4) will try and derail Paul Daley’s (23-8-2) fast-track to a welterweight title shot at UFC 113 when the two meet in a co-main event bout. Koscheck is coming in riding a two-fight winning streak including a victory at the November UFC 106 event. Daley comes in with a four-fight winning streak; two of the victories came inside of the octagon. Koscheck, 32, is a Pennsylvania-native who transitioned from a four-time All-American wrestler to a successful mixed-martial artist. He debuted in June of 2003 and won his first four bouts before earning his way onto The Ultimate Fighter 1. He came out of the show on fire winning seven of his first eight fights before falling into somewhat of a slump. From August 2007 through February 2008, he recorded a 3-3 mark. He has since turned it around with victories in his last two fights including wins over Frank Trigg (UFC 103) and Anthony Johnson (UFC 106). Daley, 27, is an England-born striker who fights out of the Team Rough House brand. He made a June 2003 debut and served as a journeyman for his first six years of his career. He had stints with Elite XC, Cage Rage, Strikeforce, and MFC, among others during that span. He has had nothing but success since moving into the UFC in September 2009. He first defeated Martin Kampmann and then stopped Dustin Hazelett within a four-month span. Prediction – Daley over Koscheck TKO
UFC 113 Main Event: Mauricio Rua vs Lyoto MachidaMauricio “Shogun” Rua (18-4) will try for a second time to overtake light-heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida (16-0) in a main event title bout at UFC 113. Rua and Machida met at UFC 104 in a controversial decision that went the champion’s way, although many believed that Shogun should have been the victor. Machida, 31, is a karate-style Black House fighter who made his pro debut in May 2003. He won his first eight defeating Stephan Bonnar, Rich Franklin, and BJ Penn in organizations like the WFA, K-1, and Jungle Fight. He made his UFC 67 debut in February 2007 by defeating Sam Hoger, and had little trouble with opponents David Heath, Kaz Nakamura, Sokoudjou, Tito Ortiz, and Thiago Silva following that bout. He won the 205-pound title in May 2009 at UFC 98 with a KO victory over Rashad Evans. He then defended it with his UFC 104 win over Shogun. Rua, 28, is a Brazilian-born fighter who completes his training in his homeland with Universidad da Luta. He debuted in 2002 and went 4-1 prior to joining the PRIDE organization. He won his first eight in PRIDE defeating top fighters like Quinton Jackson, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Alistair Overeem, and Ricardo Arona on his way to the 2005 middleweight grand prix title. Overall, he lost one bout in thirteen PRIDE fights losing only to Mark Coleman. He fell in is UFC 76 debut submitting to Forrest Griffin, but, won his next two defeating Chuck Liddell and getting redemption over Mark Coleman. His last action was at UFC 104 losing to Lyoto Machida in a light-heavyweight title bout. Prediction – Machida over Rua TKO
