UFC 115 Predictions: Preliminary Card

Mike Pyle vs. Jesse Lennox

Xtreme Couture’s Mike Pyle (19-7-1) finds himself in a must-win situation when he faces Jesse Lennox (11-2) in a UFC 115 preliminary card bout contested in the welterweight division.

Pyle debuted over a decade ago and was considered a true “journeyman” fighter after stints in the WEC, IFL, Elite XC, Strikeforce, Sengoku, Affliction and others. He was on a four-fight win streak when he was scooped up by the UFC last year. He has lost two of three since joining the organization including at UFC 108 by TKO against Jake Ellenberger.

Lennox is a well-rounded Miletich Fighting Systems member who debuted in 2006 and went on to win his first 7 bouts and 9 of his first 10 overall. He then joined the WEC and won his only bout in January (WEC 38) of last year via KO against Blas Avena. He moved into the UFC and won his UFC 101 debut with a TKO of Danillo Villefort, but, lost in his most recent fight at UFC Fight Night 20 by unanimous decision against Rick Story.

Prediction – Lennox submission

Ricardo Funch vs. Claude Patrick

Canadian striker Claude Patrick (11-1) will make his UFC debut against Team Link’s Ricardo Funch (7-1) in a UFC 115 preliminary card bout in the welterweight division.

Funch debuted as a pro in 2006 and won his first 7 bouts while fighting in Reality Fighting, WFL, XFC, and Cage Fight organizations. He lost in his December 2009 UFC 107 debut against Johny Hendricks, falling short on the judges’ scorecards. Of his 7 victories, 5 have ended in stoppage.

Patrick debuted in 2002 and went on to fight for several notable organizations like KOTC, IFL, TFC and Aggression MMA. His only loss came in his second career bout against UFC vet Drew McFedries by decision. He is currently on a 10-fight win streak that includes a February submission over Matt MacGrath. All 11 of his victories have ended early via stoppage.

Prediction – Patrick TKO

James Wilks vs. Peter Sobotta

The Ultimate Fighter season 9 winner James Wilks (6-3) is back in action against Polish-born Peter Sobotta (8-2) in a UFC 115 preliminary card bout in the welterweight division.

Wilks debuted seven years ago and split his first four bouts. He turned his career around by winning his next three fights and earned a spot on TUF 9. He became the TUF 9 champ by submitting DaMarques Johnson in June 2009 at the finale. He lost his sophomore bout at UFC 105 in November 2009 after Matt Brown finished him via 3 rd round TKO.

Sobotta debuted in 2004 and fought primarily in Germany through his first nine fights. He won eight of the nine before joining the ranks of the UFC. He lost his UFC 99 debut after Paul Taylor got the decision nod in their June 2009 bout. All 8 of his victories have ended in stoppages.

Prediction – Sobotta TKO

David Loiseau vs. Mario Miranda

Canadian native David Loiseau (19-9) looks to make one last run in the organization when he meets Brazilian Mario Miranda (11-1) in a middleweight bout on the UFC 115 preliminary card.

Loiseau debuted in 2000 and won 8 of 10 while fighting in his country’s UCC organization. He debuted with the UFC in April 2003 at UFC 42 and has fought off and on with them ever since. He had to earn his way back into the organization after losing 3 straight in 2006-07. He did that by winning four of five and was brought back to fight at UFC 97 in April 2009. He fought against Ed Herman, and, after a lackluster decision loss, he was shown the door once again. He picked up a victory in late-February in the MFL organization to earn yet another UFC opportunity.

Miranda debuted in 2006 and won his first eleven bouts including a unanimous decision over current UFC vet Rick Story in 2007. He had stopped his previous three opponents before falling in a UFC Fight Night 21 bout in March via 1 st round TKO against Gerald Harris. Nine of his eleven victories have ended in stoppage (5 KO and 4 SUB).

Prediction – Loiseau decision

UFC 115 Predictions: Spike TV Televised Card

Mac Danzig vs. Matt Wiman

Two lightweights in desperate need of a significant win will go head-to-head as TUF 6 winner Mac Danzig (19-7-1) will meet TUF 5’s Matt “Handsome” Wiman (11-5) in a UFC 115 preliminary card bout that can be seen as part of the Spike TV broadcast.

Danzig, 30, debuted in 2001 and fought for a variety of organizations until his first high profile bout at PRIDE 33 (Feb. 2007) against Hayato Sakurai. After getting knocked out against Sakurai, he was tabbed as a favorite on TUF 6. He breezed through the TUF 6 tournament submitting Tommy Speer at the finale and Mark Bocek at UFC 83 to begin his UFC career with a pair of victories. He lost his next three and faced a must win at UFC 109 in February against Justin Buchholz. He got the victory and dominated Buchholz winning via unanimous decision to even his UFC mark at 3-3.

Wiman, 26, debuted in 2004 and won six of his first eight before debuting at UFC 60. He lost to Spencer Fisher at UFC 60 and then entered the TUF 5 house. He didn’t win the TUF 5 tournament, but did receive a UFC contract after winning his TUF 5 finale bout. He would win three more after that, but, was on shaky ground after dropping back-to-back bouts. He, too, faced a must win situation before rebounding at UFC 107 this past December against Shane Nelson in a unanimous decision effort. He is 5-3 as a UFC lightweight.

Prediction – Danzig decision

Tyson Griffin vs. Evan Dunham

Undefeated lightweight Evan Dunham (10-0) takes a huge step up in competition at UFC 115 when he meets perennial contender Tyson Griffin (14-2) in a preliminary bout on the Spike TV portion of the card.

Griffin made his professional debut in 2004 and won his first 8 bouts including a Strikeforce victory over Duane Ludwig and a UFC 63 victory against David Lee. He lost in his UFC 67 bout with current champion Frankie Edgar, but would rebound nicely with wins in his next four bouts. He dropped another bout in October 2008 at UFC 90 via unanimous decision against Sean Sherk. He has since posted back-to-back victories including a UFC 103 KO of Hermes Franca in his most recent action.

Dunham, 28, is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who trains in Las Vegas at Xtreme Couture. He debuted over three years ago and won his first 7 bouts in organizations like Gladiator Challenge, Rise Fighting, and Palace FC. He made his UFC debut in February 2009 at UFC 95 and won via TKO over Per Eklund. He also picked up victories over Marcus Aurelio and Efrain Escudero, the latter at January’s UFC Fight Night 20.

Prediction – Griffin TKO

UFC 115 Predictions: PPV Televised Card

Carlos Condit vs. Rory MacDonald

Former WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit (24-5) will give undefeated Canadian prospect Rory MacDonald (10-0) his first true test in a UFC 115 main card bout.

Condit, 26, is an eight year professional who won 18 of his first 22 through his first four years of competition. In January 2007 he debuted for the WEC and went on to win the organizations’ welterweight title in just his second bout. He defended his title three times before transitioning into the UFC. He headlined a UFC Fight Night 18 bout against Martin Kampmann in his April 2009 debut, which he lost via split decision. He turned the tables and won his next bout at UFC Fight Night 19 in September via split decision against Jake Ellenberger.

MacDonald, 20, is a Toshido Fighting Arts member who debuted in October 2005. He fought primarily for KOTC Canada over his first four years winning nine bouts without a loss and capturing the KOTC 155-lb title. He had to give up his title to fight in the UFC where he became one of the youngest to ever set foot in the octagon. He debuted at UFC Fight Night 20 in January submitting Mike Guymon with a 1 st round armbar. All ten of his victories have ended early, four by way of TKO/KO and six via submission.

Prediction – MacDonald submission

Ben Rothwell vs. Gilbert Yvel

“Big” Ben Rothwell (30-7) will meet Dutch kickboxer Gilbert “Hurricane” Yvel (36-14-1, 1 no contest) in a UFC 115 main card clash. Both fighters fell in their respective organizational debuts.

Rothwell, 28, is a Roufusport fighter who made his professional debut nearly a decade ago. After a solid start to his career, he won 13 straight fights from March 2006 through September 2007 defeating notables Krzysztof Soszynski, Roy Nelson, and Ricco Rodriguez, among others. He dropped a July 2008 Affliction bout against Andrei Arlovski, but after winning his next bout 5 months later, signed with the UFC. He lasted part of two rounds in his UFC 104 debut against Cain Velasquez before succumbing to strikes and an eventual TKO.

Yvel, 33, is a former kickboxer who debuted in 1997 and was a PRIDE regular from 2000-2007. He fought stars like Vitor Belfort, Wanderlei Silva, and Don Frye while in PRIDE, but produced only a (2-7, 1 no contest) record in that span. He has resurrected his career as of late, he won 8 of 9 before signing to fight for the UFC. He made his debut in January 2010 at UFC 108 losing via 1 st round TKO against Junior dos Santos.

Prediction – Yvel TKO

Paulo Thiago vs. Martin Kampmann

In a match-up of top striking contenders, Brazilian Paulo Thiago (13-1) will meet top Danish welterweight Martin Kampmann (16-3) in a UFC 115 main card bout.

Thiago, 29, is a five year professional who now trains with the Black House in Brazil. He won his first ten bouts, all of which were contested in his home country. He finally made his UFC debut in February 2009 at UFC 95 and won “knockout of the night” honors after completing a devastating KO of Josh Koscheck. He lost in his second UFC bout in July 2009 at UFC 100 via unanimous decision against Jon Fitch, but has since posted back-to-back victories. He defeated Mike Swick at UFC 109 this past February via technical submission.

Kampmann, 28, is an Xtreme Couture fighter who has over seven years of professional experience to his credit. He won nine of his first ten bouts and was acquired with the purchase of the World Fighting Alliance organization. He made an August 2006 UFC Fight Night 6 debut with a victory over Crafton Wallace. He won his first four UFC bouts before dropping a UFC 88 bout against Nathan Marquardt. He won two more after the loss, but, when Paul Daley knocked him out at UFC 103, his momentum was shot. He earned back some of the momentum that he lost by defeating Jacob Volkmann at UFC 108 in January.

Prediction – Thiago KO

Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic vs. Pat Barry

A heavyweight clash between former kick-boxers and current contenders Pat Barry (5-1) and Mirko Filipovic (26-7-2, 1 no contest) will take place at UFC 115 in the co-main event slot.

Filipovic, 35, is a Croatian kickboxer who debuted in MMA in 2001. He made his name while fighting in Japan’s PRIDE organization from 2001-2006 where he earned the 2006 Open-Weight Grand Prix championship. He joined the UFC in February 2007 at UFC 67 and easily defeated Eddie Sanchez. He dropped bouts against Gabriel Gonzaga and Cheick Kongo and retreated back to Japan. He fought in DREAM and K-1 Dynamite winning two of three fights (2-0, 1 no contest) before returning to the UFC. He has won two of three since his return defeating Anthony Perosh by TKO in his most recent action at February’s UFC 110.

Barry, 30, is a Louisiana-born fighter who trains with Duke Roufas’ Roufusport. He made his MMA debut in 2008 after competing in kickboxing matches from 2002-2008. He won his first three MMA bouts when the UFC scooped him up and added him to their developing HW division. He debuted in December 2008 at UFC 92 where he dismantled Dan Evensen with leg kicks. He was then upset at UFC 98 via Tim Hague submission, but quickly rebounded in his last fight in October 2009 at UFC 104 with a 2 nd round TKO of another former kickboxer, Antoni Hardonk. He earned both “fight of the night” and “knockout of the night” bonuses for his UFC 104 efforts.

Prediction – Filipovic submission

UFC 115 Main Event: Chuck Liddell vs Rich Franklin

Although UFC President, Dana White insisted that Hall-of-Famer Chuck Liddell “would never fight again,” he is back at it and in headlining fashion. “The Iceman” is in the UFC 115 main event bout against former 185-lb champ Rich Franklin (26-5, 1 no contest). The bout will take place in the light-heavyweight division.

Liddell, 40, is a California native who trains with John Hackleman and John Lewis at “The Pit.” After wrestling at Cal Poly Tech, he debuted in MMA in 1998 at UFC 17. He fought the majority of his career in the UFC, winning the light-heavyweight title at UFC 52 in April 2005 with a KO of Randy Couture. He defended his title four times before losing at the May 2007 UFC 71 against Quinton Jackson. Including that loss, Liddell has dropped four of his last five bouts. His most recent fight was in April 2009 at UFC 97 losing via TKO against current 205 champ, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. He can currently be seen on The Ultimate Fighter season 11 as a coach opposite of Tito Ortiz.

Franklin, 35, is an Ohio-born fighter who trains with Team Extreme in his home state and with Matt Hume at AMC Pankration in Washington. He debuted in 1999 and made it into the UFC undefeated after 10 bouts. He posted four organizational wins before winning the 185-lb title at UFC 53 in June 2005 against the late Evan Tanner. He defended it twice before losing to Anderson Silva in October 2006’s UFC 64. He contended for the title again at UFC 77 one year later, but lost again to Silva via TKO. Since his second loss to Silva, he has won three and lost two while fighting at middleweight, light-heavyweight, and at 195-lbs. His most recent fight in September 2009 (UFC 103) ended in a loss via 1st round TKO against Vitor Belfort. It is rumored that Franklin will take over for an injured Tito Ortiz on the current season of The Ultimate Fighter.

Prediction – Liddell TKO
