UFC on FX 01 Predictions: Preliminary CardKamal Shalorus vs. Khabib NurmagomedovWEC veteran Kamal Shalorus (7-1-2) will likely be fighting for his roster position at UFC on FX in a preliminary card bout versus promotional newcomer Khabib Nurmagomedov (16-0) in a 155-pound bout. Shalorus is an Iran-born mixed martial artist who now fights out of a Texas-based gym. Shalorus made his professional debut in 2008 and after winning four of his first five bouts on the regional circuit, he joined the WEC’s roster of lightweight fighters. Over his two plus years as a WEC fighter, Shalorus was victorious in three of his four bouts including a WEC 53 split decision over Bart Palaszewski last December. After the WEC was absorbed into the UFC, Shalorus lost his octagon debut at UFC 128 this past March via TKO by Jim Miller. Nurmagomedov, 23, is a Russian-born mixed martial artist who has spent time recently training out of the AMA Fight Club in New Jersey. The striking specialist made his professional mixed martial arts debut in 2008 and has won all sixteen of his bouts over the last three years in decisive fashion. Nurmagomedov has spent time in Russia fighting for several organizations including M-1 Challenge, CSFU, and most recently Pro FC. In his most recent fight this past October, Nurmagomedov won via 1 st round TKO over Arymarcel Santos in a Pro FC event. Prediction – Nurmagomedov TKO
Charlie Brenneman vs. Daniel RobertsFormer NCAA Division I wrestler Charlie Brenneman (14-3) will try and get back in the winner’s circle at UFC 142 when he meets Daniel Roberts (12-3) in a welterweight clash on the preliminary portion of the card. Brenneman, 30, is a Pennsylvania-born mixed martial artist who fights out of the AMA Fight Club in New Jersey. Brenneman made his professional debut in 2007 and won eleven of his first twelve while competing for organizations like Ring of Combat, Extreme Challenge, and Sho XC. In March 2010 Brenneman won his UFC debut with a decision victory over Jason High. Johny Hendricks was the first to hand Brenneman a loss inside the octagon, however the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belt put together back to back victories in a rebounding effort including a surprise decision victory over Rick Story at UFC Live on VS 4 in Pittsburgh, PA. His winning streak was stopped in his most recent bout at UFC Live on VS 6 this past October when he was knocked out by an Anthony Johnson head kick. Roberts, 31, is an Illinois-born mixed martial artist who now fights out of California at the Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Roberts made his professional debut in 2007 and went on to win his first nine bouts while competing all over Oklahoma on the regional circuit. The submission specialist made his octagon debut in March 2010 losing via KO courtesy of John Howard. Despite the loss, Roberts made a good impression following the loss with three consecutive victories defeating opponents like Forrest Petz, Mike Guymon, and Greg Soto. Roberts hasn’t continued his success lately however, he has dropped back-to-back bouts falling to Claude Patrick at UFC 129 this past April and Rich Attonito at UFC Live on VS 6 in June. Prediction – Brenneman decision
Joseph Sandoval vs. Nick DenisUFC rookie Nick Denis (10-2) will bring his knockout power into the octagon at UFC on FX in a preliminary card bout versus Joseph Sandoval (6-1) that will be contested in the bantamweight division. Sandoval, 25, is a Texas-based mixed martial artist who fights out of Bighead MMA. The two-year professional won his first six bouts while competing primarily for the Texas-based Shark Fights promotion. At UFC on VS 6 this past October, Sandoval was handed his first career loss when he was knocked out by Walel Watson. Denis, 28, is a Canadian-based mixed martial artist who fights out of Ronin MMA in Ottawa. The knockout specialist made his professional debut in 2006 and won the first six bouts of his career fighting mostly in the King of the Cage organization where he was the Canadian Bantamweight Champion. In March 2009 Denis entered the Sengoku Featherweight Grand Prix in Japan advancing into the quarterfinals losing via TKO against Marlon Sandro. Since his May 2009 loss to Sandro, Denis was been victorious in three of his four bouts fighting in Japan and Canada for mid-level organizations. In his most recent action this past October, Denis won via KO slam over Nick Mamalis in a regional event in Quebec, Canada. PREDICTION – DENIS TKO
Daniel Pineda vs. Pat SchillingA pair of featherweight submission specialists will debut against each other at UFC on FX when Daniel Pineda (15-7) meets Pat Schilling (5-0) in a preliminary card bout. Pineda, 26, is a Texas-based mixed martial artist who fights out of the 4 OZ. Fight Club. Pineda made his professional debut in 2007 and won 8 of his first 10 to earn a spot on a Bellator FC card. He lost his only Bellator bout in May 2009 beginning a four-fight losing streak. He eventually came out of the slump and has since won seven of his last eight while fighting lately for the Texas-based Legacy Fighting Championships organization. Most recently, Pineda defeated Gilbert Jimenez via TKO at LFC 9 this past December. Schilling is a Midwest-based mixed martial artist who has been competing as a professional for two years now. After knocking out his first opponent in January 2010 Schilling followed by submitting the next four that he faced. Schilling has competed for several mid-level organizations including Iowa Insanity, Brutaal Fight Night, Barrera Promotions, and W-1 MMA. Most recently, Schilling submitted Cody Larson at Brutaal Fight Night last June during the 1 st round of their contest. PREDICTION – SCHILLING SUBMISSION
Fabricio Camoes vs. Tommy HaydenBrazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist Fabricio Camoes (13-6-1) will be back inside the octagon at UFC on FX in a preliminary contest versus promotional rookie Tommy Hayden (8-0) in a lightweight bout. Camoes, 33, is a Brazilian-native who fights out of San Diego with Gracie Humaita Blackhouse. The 3 rd Degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt made his professional debut in 1997 and won 8 of his first 13 while competing in his home country in regional events. In 2009 Camoes won three consecutive bouts for the Strikeforce organization and earned an opportunity to fight under the UFC banner. He fought Caol Uno to a majority draw at UFC 106 and then was submitted by Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 111. Camoes was released after his loss to Pellegrino but earned his way back in after recording back-to-back victories in the Tachi Palace Fights organization. His most recent win came last May winning a decision over former The Ultimate Fighter Efrain Escudero. Hayden, 25, is an Ohio-based mixed martial artist who fights out of Team Jorge Gurgel near Cincinnati. Hayden made his professional debut in March 2008 and fought in several different Midwest-based organizations. He picked up victories over eight straight opponents including submitting The Ultimate Fighter 14 participant Dustin Neace in a 2009 bout. His most recent activity took place last May at AMMA 13 where he posted a 1 st round submission victory over Harry Johnson. Hayden has 5 submission victories, 2 TKO victories, and 1 DQ victory. PREDICTION – HAYDEN TKO
Jorge Rivera vs. Eric SchaferLongtime UFC veteran Jorge Rivera (19-9) will try and stay relevant in the middleweight division at UFC on FX in a preliminary card bout when he meets another promotional vet, Eric Schafer (12-6). Rivera, 39, is a Massachusetts-born mixed martial artist who now fights out of Team Sityodtong in Boston. Rivera made his professional debut in 2001 and won 5 of his first 6 while fighting on the regional circuit across his home state. Rivera won only 2 of his first 5 for the UFC from September 2003 through January 2006 before he had to earn his way back into the organization through The Ultimate Fighter 4. Rivera didn’t win “The Comeback” season of TUF but did make it back into the organization in November 2006 and won 5 of his next 7 under the UFC name including 3 straight that set up a main event opposite Michael Bisping. Rivera promoted the UFC 127 clash with Bisping well but was finished in the 2 nd round of their heated match-up last February. In his most recent action Rivera was handed a second straight defeat when upstart Constantinos Philippou took a split decision this August at UFC 133. Schafer, 34, is a Wisconsin-based mixed martial artist who has been competing as a professional since 1998. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt won 6 of his first 9 fighting on local events across the Midwest United States. He finally did land a UFC job in 2006 but won only once over his first three fights before earning his release. Schafer pounded out back to back victories for the Wisconsin-based GFS promotion to earn a second crack inside the UFC’s octagon. His second stint began with two impressive victories but ended after losing back-to-back fights once again. This time he only had to win one bout outside of the organization before replacing an injured fighter on the UFC 136 card this fall. Schafer was competitive in the October 2011 bout but was defeated by unanimous decision against Aaron Simpson over three months ago. PREDICTION – RIVERA TKO
Pat Barry vs. Christian MorecraftFormer kickboxer Pat Barry (6-4) will likely be fighting for his job at UFC on FX against the well-rounded Christian Morecraft (7-2) in a heavyweight match-up that will be positioned on the main card. Barry, 32, is a Louisiana-born mixed martial artist who fights out of Minnesota with Team Death Clutch. “HD” made his professional debut in 2008 and won his first three fights of his career fighting on the regional fight scene to earn a UFC contract. Barry went on to win 2 of his first 3 inside the UFC’s octagon knocking out Dan Evensen at UFC 92 and Antoni Hardonk at UFC 104. Since his early UFC success, Barry has won only one of his last four bouts losing his most recent fight at UFC on VS 6 this past October against Stefan Struve. Morecraft, 25, is a Washington D.C. native who now fights out of New York with Team Bombsquad. Morecraft turned pro and made his debut in 2008 winning his first six bouts while fighting on the regional circuit in Massachusetts. Since arriving inside the octagon in late-2010, Morecraft has lost two of his three bouts. At UFC 117 he was defeated by Stefan Struve, he upset Sean McCorkle at UFC Fight Night 24 last March, and most recently lost to Matt Mitrione at UFC on VS 4 last June. PREDICTION – BARRY TKO
Mike Easton vs. Jared PapazianMike “The Hulk” Easton (11-1) has been promoted to the UFC on FX main card in just his second appearance for the promotion and will welcome organizational rookie Jared Papazian (14-6) in a bantamweight bout. Easton, 27, is a Washington D.C. native who now fights out of California with Team Lloyd Irvin and Alliance MMA. “The Hulk” made his professional debut in 2003 and won the first five bouts of his career before dropping his first bout in September 2007. After suffering his first loss, Easton picked up five straight victories to earn a UFC opportunity. In his UFC on VS 6 debut, Easton won via TKO against Byron Bloodworth. Papazian, 23, is a California-based mixed martial artist who fights out of Team Hayastan. Papazian made his professional debut in June 2008 but won only six of his first twelve bouts. The Rage in the Cage, King of the Cage, and Pure Combat veteran has since turned it around and won eight of his last nine including his most recent three bouts. In his most recent action, Papazian won a unanimous decision over Marvin Garcia at a King of the Cage event last September. PREDICTION – EASTON TKO
Duane Ludwig vs. Josh NeerRiding a two-fight winning streak, Duane “Bang” Ludwig (21-11) will take on Josh “The Dentist” Neer (32-10-1) in a welterweight contest in the UFC on FX co-main event. Ludwig, 33, is a Colorado-based mixed martial artist who fights out of the Grudge Training Center in Denver. “Bang” made his professional debut in 2000 and won nine of his first eleven fighting in regional promotions like Gladiator Challenge, King of the Cage, and Ring of Fire. The kickboxing specialist won two bouts for the UFC during the early days of the promotion but left to fight for other organizations. He joined Strikeforce in 2006 and fought seven times for the promotion over the next three years. He rejoined the UFC in early-2010 and lost back to back bouts while competing in the lightweight division. He immediately switched to the 170-pound division and has since won back-to-back bouts defeating Amir Sadollah at UFC on VS 5 this past August via decision. Neer, 28, is an Iowa-based mixed martial artist who now fights out of the Miletich Martial Arts camp. “The Dentist” made his professional debut in 2003 and won 13 of his first 15 fighting all across Iowa in several regional organizations. In his first go-around with the UFC from August 2005 through August 2006, Neer split the six bouts that he competed in. He did earn his way back into the UFC with six wins over his next seven fights. During his second stint with the organization, Neer won only twice out of the five fights he was in from April 2008 through October 2009. After winning bouts on the regional circuit for Shark Fights, Max Fights, and Superior Cage Combat, Neer returned to the UFC for a third time in early-2011. In his third stint, Neer won at UFC on VS 6 this past October via TKO over Keith Wisniewski. PREDICTION – LUDWIG SPLIT DECISION
UFC on FX 01 Main Event - Melvin Guillard vs. Jim MillerKnockout artist Melvin Guillard (30-9-2, NC) will match his skills against wrestling standout Jim Miller (20-3) in a pivotal lightweight division bout in the UFC on FX main event. Guillard, 28, is a Louisiana-born mixed martial artist who fights out of Imperial Athletics in Florida. “The Young Assassin” made his professional debut in 2002 and went on to win 18 of his first 25 bouts fighting in multiple promotions such as Freestyle Fighting Championships and Extreme Challenge. Guillard earned his way into the UFC through The Ultimate Fighter 2 and won three of his first four under the UFC banner. However, after suffering back to back losses in 2007, Guillard had to pick up a victory in the Rage in the Cage promotion before he could find his way back inside the octagon. He did return in 2008 and has since won seven of his last nine. Guillard has his 5-fight winning streak stopped in his most recent bout this past October at UFC 136 when Joe Lauzon submitted him. Miller, 28, is a New Jersey-based mixed martial artist who fights out of the AMA Fight Club. The former wrestler made his MMA debut in 2005 and won 11 of his first 12 while fighting for Ring of Combat, IFL, and Reality Fighting organizations. Miller joined the UFC in 2008 and won his first two bouts before falling to Gray Maynard at UFC 96 in March of 2009. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt bounced back and won seven straight fights inside the octagon defeating the likes of Duane Ludwig, Charles Oliveira, and Kamal Shalorus. His seven-fight winning streak was snapped this past August at UFC on VS 5 via decision against Benson Henderson. PREDICTION – MILLER UNANIMOUS DECISION
