UFC on Versus Predictions: Preliminary Card

Eric Schafer vs. Jason Brilz

Light-Heavyweights Eric “Red” Schafer (11-4-2) and Jason Brilz (17-2-1) will try and get back on track after both suffered losses in their most recent action. Schafer lost at UFC 104 in October after a decision went the way of his opponent, Ryan Bader. Brilz lost a tight split decision against Eliot Marshall at UFC 103 in September.

Schafer, 32, has been fighting professionally for nearly a decade. He won six of nine fights prior to signing with the UFC. He won his octagon debut, however dropped the next two forcing him out of the promotion. He won two bouts outside of the organization earning his way back into the UFC, where he has since won back-to-back bouts. His UFC 104 unanimous decision loss to Bader was his third in six fights.

Brilz is a North Dakota born fighter who debuted ten years ago. He lost only once in seventeen fights participating in organizations such as Victory FC, King of the Cage and Ultimate Wrestling. He recorded victories against credible opponents like Mike Patt, Jason MacDonald, and Alex Schoenauer. He signed with the UFC in 2008 and defeated Brad Morris and Tim Boetsch in his first two bouts. It was then, that Eliot Marshall handed him his first loss inside the octagon via split decision.

Prediction – Schafer over Brilz via submission

Mike Pierce vs. Julio Paulino

Mike Pierce (10-3) will make his third appearance inside the octagon when he meets UFC newcomer Julio Paulino (17-2) in a preliminary bout in the welterweight division on the UFC on Versus 1 card. Pierce was in action three months ago losing to Jon Fitch via unanimous decision at the UFC 107 card. New Jersey-based Paulino earned a 2 nd round TKO of former UFC veteran Rob Yundt at Alaska FC 68 on February 10 th.

Mike Pierce is a former Portland University wrestler turned mixed martial artist for more than three years now. He appeared in several mid-level organizations such as Elite Warriors Challenge, Gladiators Challenge, Sportfight, and Carnage at the Creek. He eventually worked his way up to a WEC 39 bout in March 2009 where he earned a TKO victory over Justin Haskins. His WEC win opened the door for a UFC contract, which he made his first appearance on the UFC Fight Night 19 event card in September 2009. He upset Brock Larson via unanimous decision in his debut but lost against Fitch in his latest follow-up bout at UFC 107.

Paulino debuted in January 2005 and fought primarily for Alaska Fighting Championships over the next four years. He was able to pick up seventeen victories in nineteen bouts, including defeats of UFC veterans Terry Martin and Yundt. One of his two losses came against current UFC-cager Rick Story during a November 2007 AFC bout. He brings his seven-fight winning streak into his UFC debut, the latest less than a month-and-a-half ago.

Prediction – Pierce over Paulino via TKO

Duane Ludwig vs. Darren Elkins

Duane “Bang” Ludwig (18-9) will now face UFC newcomer Darren Elkins (9-1) in a lightweight bout on the UFC on Versus preliminary card. His original opponent, Spencer Fisher, bowed out because of an injury. His November 2009 unanimous decision over former UFC fighter Gideon Ray was important to earning a UFC contract.

Prediction – Ludwig over Elkins via submission

Brendan Schaub vs. Chase Gormley

The Ultimate Fighter 10 runner-up Brendan Schaub (4-1) and UFC sophomore Chase Gormley (6-1) are in desperate need of a victory at UFC on Versus, especially since both heavyweights fell short in their debuts. Schaub lost against Roy nelson at the December TUF 10 finale and Gormley lost to 6 foot 11 inch Stefan Struve at UFC 104 last October via submission.

Schaub, 26, is a Jackson’s Submission Fighting student who was introduced to MMA after his college football career ended at The University of Colorado. He fought four times, three of which came in the Ring of Fire organization, before being featured on TUF 10. He was impressive in the reality show tournament until running into Roy Nelson at the finale. Nelson caught him with a well-placed punch that sent him crashing to the floor. He showed enough that he was earned a spot on the UFC roster.

Gormley was a standout wrestler at Montana State University prior to beginning his MMA career in April 2007. He compiled six victories without a loss while fighting for King of the Cage, Gladiators Challenge, COF, and Maximum FC. He was then scheduled to fight Ben Rothwell at Affliction Trilogy, however the bout and company ended up folding causing the match to be moved to a UFC card and then postponed all together. Gormley went on to fight Struve at UFC 104 where he was caught with a 1st round submission giving him his first career loss.

Prediction – Schaub over Gormley via decision

John Howard vs. Daniel Roberts

Daniel Roberts (9-0) will make his UFC debut while replacing Anthony Johnson in a welterweight fight against John “Doomsday” Howard (13-4) on the UFC on Versus 1 card. Roberts’s last fight came in January defeating Anthony Macias via submission; Howard stopped Dennis Hallman at the TUF 10 finale via KO in December.

Howard, 27, is a Boston-based fighter who trains at Wai Kru. He fought for several eastern based promotions like Combat Zone, WFL, Ring of Combat, and most notably the International Fight League after his 2004 debut. He compiled a respectable 7-4 record but after putting together three consecutive victories in 2008, signed on the UFC dotted line. He earned split decision victories over Chris Wilson and Tamdan McCory in his first two bouts before disposing of Dennis Hallman via KO at TUF 10 Finale in December.

Roberts debuted in September 2007 for the Extreme Fight League and later would fight in FCF, C3 Fights, Bricktown Brawl, and 5150 organizations. He earned his seventh submission victory in January with his drubbing of former PRIDE fighter Anthony Macias. Roberts is a former collegiate wrestler at Bacone College in Oklahoma.

Prediction – Howard over Roberts via TKO

Eliot Marshall vs. Vladimir Matyushenko

A light-heavyweight scrap between Eliot Marshall (8-1) and Vladimir Matyushenko (23-4) is on tap for the UFC on Versus preliminary card. Marshall has taken care of his business since emerging from The Ultimate Fighter season 8, winning all three of his UFC bouts. Matyushenko, now in his second UFC stint, won his return fight at UFC 103 in September.

Since that bout, he fought three more times for the UFC and then went on a streak winning eight bouts in a row capturing the IFL light-heavyweight championship along the way. He did fall in his January Affliction bout but has posted back-to-back victories including a UFC 103 decision over UFC newcomer Igor Pokrajac.

Prediction – Marshall over Matyushenko via submission

Clay Guida vs. Shannon Gugerty

Clay “The Carpenter” Guida (25-11) will try and get back in the winning column when he takes on Shannon Gugerty (12-4) in a lightweight bout on the UFC on Versus preliminary card. Guida is coming in after dropping back-to-back bouts, the latest at UFC 107 in December. Gugerty was in action in November at UFC 105; however he was submitted by Terry Etim.

Guida, 28, is a seven-year professional with experience in many different organizations. He won his debut over Dale Hartt but lost two of his last three bouts including his most recent fight at UFC 105 against Terry Etim.

Prediction – Guida over Gugerty via decision

Alessio Sakara vs. James Irvin

James Irvin (14-5, 1 NC) will make his middleweight debut against Italian, Alessio Sakara (14-7, 1 NC), on the UFC on Versus main card. Sakara fought last summer at UFC 101 defeating Thales Leites in a slow-moving bout that was decided via split decision. UFC on Versus Main Event: Brandon Vera vs Jon Jones

Brandon Vera (11-4) will test Jon “Bones” Jones (9-1) in an intriguing heavyweight bout featured as the main event at UFC on Versus. Vera, 32, has been a member of Team Lloyd Irvin for many of his eight years as a mixed martial artist. Prior to the UFC, “The Truth” recorded four victories without a loss, two of which came in the WEC. After losing to both Tim Sylvia and Fabricio Werdum, he decided to drop to 205-pounds where the results have been mixed.
