The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale Fight Card: TUF 10 Finale Fight Card & ResultsThe Ultimate Fighter 10 Heavyweights concludes with the TUF 10 finale on December 5, 2009, as the UFC will crown a new Ultimate Fighter Champion and award the 6-digit contract to fight in the UFC's famed Octagon. Our recap of the televised fights from the finale are below and we have also list the TUF 10 finale results for reference.
Matt Mitrione vs. Marcus JonesTwo sworn enemies in the TUF 10 house met inside the octagon and it was Team Rashad’s Matt Mitrione coming out on top of Team Rampage’s Marcus “Big Baby” Jones in the night’s first televised bout on the main card at the final. Mitrione was able to outlast an early takedown and ground and pound attack by the former number one draft pick from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a one-sided 1st round. It was in the early seconds of the 2nd frame when Mitrione caught Jones with a hard right hook that sent him crashing face first to the floor. Referee Steve Mazzagatti stepped in to save Jones after two more strikes connected while on the ground. Both fighters were making their official UFC debuts, but it was Mitrione (1-0) who was also making his professional debut. Jones (4-2), who played six seasons in the NFL, is defeated for just the second time in six career bouts.
Frankie Edgar vs. Matt VeachTop lightweight contender Frankie “The Answer” Edgar used his right hand to help set up his 2 nd round rear naked choke submission victory over previously unbeaten H.I.T. Squad fighter, Matt Veach. Veach opened up the fight as the aggressor, slamming Edgar to the mat twice with highlight-reel slams, but Edgar was able to survive the takedowns and weather the heavy power punches that Veach offered throughout the initial round. “The Answer” methodically broke down his opponent in the first half of the 2 nd round, using a hard right cross to drop the wrestling specialist. From there, Edgar worked to take his back, loosened up his opponent with punches and locked in the fight-ending rear naked choke submission at the 2:22 mark. Edgar (11-1) has now been victorious in three straight and six of seven UFC bouts since his debut in early 2007. While he moves up into contender status, Veach (11-1) drops to 1-1 in the UFC but remains steady within the 155-pound division after defeating Matt Grice in his octagon debut ten months ago.
Jon Jones vs. Matt HamillJon Jones, now of Greg Jackson’s camp in New Mexico, showed why he is so highly-regarded in quite possibly the promotion’s deepest division. He used his trademark unique striking skills and devastating ground and pound to control Hamill. However, when it was ruled that a couple of his 1st round elbows were illegal, he was handed the disqualification loss. Both fighters tried some classic striking skills early on, but Jones was first to engage after he tripped Hamill and put him on his back. Immediately, Jones jumped into mount position where he overwhelmed the collegiate wrestler with punches and elbows to the head and body. Referee Steve Mazaggati ruled that a couple of the elbows were too straight up and down, and when Hamill couldn’t continue, he had to stop the fight. Jones (9-1) has his three-fight winning streak stopped inside the octagon. Hamill (8-2) has put together three consecutive UFC victories and has won seven of nine bouts overall within the promotion. Both fighters remain at or near the top of the 205-pound division.
Roy Nelson vs. Brendan SchaubRoy Nelson finished the TUF 10 tournament with a 1st round KO victory over Team Rashad prospect Brendan Schaub using a hard right hand that landed behind the ear of the Colorado-native sending him crashing to the floor. It looked like Schaub was in control early, using his quickness and reach advantage to try and pick “Big Country” apart. Nelson was able to secure a takedown which interfered with Schaub’s stand-up strategy, but was unable to keep his counterpart on the ground. As both fighters returned to their feet, Schaub tagged Nelson with a couple of more well-timed shots to the head. Nelson picked his spots including a hard overhand right to the side of Schaub’s head sending him to the ground and unconscious at the 3:45 mark in the opening stanza. Nelson (14-4) is victorious for the first time since he defeated former TUF heavyweight Brad Imes in May of 2008 while fighting for the now-defunct IFL. He will probably jump right into the middle of the heavyweight division, whereas Schaub will have to start slow and improve on some of his holes in his stand-up defense. Schaub (4-1) dropped his first fight in five chances after winning four straight 1st round TKO’s.
Kimbo Slice vs. Houston AlexanderIn what was supposed to be quick slugfest between two similar-style strikers, Kimbo Slice instead was patient in outlasting Nebraska-native Houston “The Assassin” Alexander on his way to a unanimous decision victory on the main card at the TUF 10 final. Almost the entire 1st round featured Alexander dancing around the dangerous former street-fighting legend, who wasn’t exactly willing to waste his energy to track his opponent down either. The 2nd round contained more action as Kimbo slammed Alexander to the ground and demonstrated his improved ground game, even going as far as attempting a submission, thanks in large part to his change in training, which is now at the Florida-based American Top Team. Alexander worked on chopping down Slice with front leg kicks, and almost did that as he sent Kimbo to the ground in the last round with a hard kick. Kimbo survived and returned to his feet, where he did just enough to convince the judges in his favor. The scores were all in Kimbo’s (4-1) favor (29-28, 29-28, 30-27) on his way to his first UFC victory. He wins for the first time since his May 2008 TKO victory over James Thompson in Elite XC. Alexander (9-5), who recently moved outside of the organization to pick up a victory, drops his fourth straight fight under the UFC banner and puts his future with the organization in doubt.
