UFC 100 Results: UFC 100 Results, Recap & Review
UFC celebrated the historic UFC 100 event from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 11, 2009 in Las Vegas. The Ultimate Fighting Championship did not disappoint as they featured two title fights at UFC 100 as Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar faced Frank Mir in the UFC 100 Main Event and Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre took on Thiago Alves. It was an action-packed night that lived up the the hype; hype and coverage that has never been seen before in thw world of Mixed Martial Arts. UFC 100 1st Bout: Alan Belcher 13-4 vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama 12-1:Akiyama, a judo specialist, a legend in Japan made his UFC debut against the talented and experienced Alan Belcher who has 9 UFC events. The 1st round was halted due to a wicked leg kick by Belcher to Akiyama’s groin. As the fight resumed, the fight remained in the standup. Belcher landed a solid left hand which floored Akiyama but he quickly regained his composure. The 1st round was filled with solid punches and good excitement. Akiyama wins a very close 1st round. The 2nd round began with Akiyama quickly taking Belcher to the ground. Belcher slipped out but Akiyama quickly gained side control. Akiyama continued to control from the top position until 2 minutes left in the 2 nd round. Akiyama easily wins the 2nd round. The 3rd round remained in the stand up with Akiyama dominating on his feet. Akiyama caught Belchers kick and landed a solid right hand knocking Belcher to the ground. Belcher showed tremendous athleticism escaping. Late in the 3rd round Yoshirio took Belcher to the ground. A great fight, I have it 29-28 Akiyama. UFC 100 2nd Bout: Dan Henderson 24-7 vs. Michael Bisping 18-1:A matchup filled with bad blood stemming from The Ultimate Fighter. Henderson and Bisping are not just polar opposites in the cage but also in terms of personality. Bisping is a very special stand up fighter and Henderson has legendary wrestling skills. The 1st round begins with both fighters feeling each other out. Henderson through several big strikes with none landing until one finally landed stunning Bisping. Bisping did a good job of keeping distance throughout most of the 1st round but Henderson landed more shots. The 2nd round stayed in the stand up with both fighters showing excellent defensive skills. Henderson landed an incredible right hand knocking Michael Bisping completely stiff 3:20 into the 2nd round. The biased crowd roared in approval. This knockout will be shown for years as one of the most devastating in the history of the UFC. This victory should put Henderson in place for a rematch against Anderson Silva for the Middleweight Title.
Welterweight Championship: Georges St. Pierre 18-2 vs. Thiago Alves 22-4:GSP holds a 6 inch reach advantage and a quickness advantage. Alves will hold a strength advantage. GSP landed a very impressive take down into Alves’ guard. GSP gained control of Alves back but couldn’t maintain the control. GSP wins the 1st round controlling all 5 minutes. 2nd round: GSP landed another impressive takedown early in the round. GSP landed several elbows in Alves’ guard. Alves managed to escape to his feet with 35 seconds left in the round. Another round dominated by GSP. 3rd round: Despite Alves’ stand up skills he cannot get inside of GSP. The reach and athleticism of GSP has been too much as Alves is taken to the ground yet again. GSP landed a hard right hand knocking Alves to the ground late in the round. GSP jumped on Alves landing several knees and cruises to another round victory. 4th round: Less than a minute into the round GSP landed a devastating take down. GSP tried to grab Alves back but got to high causing him to slide off. For the 1st time in the bout Alves gained top control. GSP exploded back to his feet using his incredible athletic ability. GSP caught Alves’ leg kick and lands a tough right hand knocking him to the ground with a minute left in the round. GSP grabbed his back as the round ends. Another round dominated by GSP. 5th and final round: In between round GSP told his trainer Greg Jackson that he pulled a groin muscle. Even with that, GSP landed another takedown a minute into the round. GSP dominated the 5th round as well capping off a completely dominating performance, cemented himself as one of the best fighters on the planet. Official Decision: GSP via UD. In the post fight interview, GSP didn’t rule out a possible match up with Anderson Silva.
UFC 100 Main Event - Heavyweight Championship: Brock Lesnar 3-1 vs. Frank Mir 12-3:A rematch of two fighters who clearly don’t like each other. Lesnar starts the fight with more patience than their 1st encounter. The fighters exchange with Brock gaining the top position. Lesnar controls the top position keeping tight against Mir preventing him from rolling his hips. Lesnar lands several powerful right hands to Mir’s face. Brock completely dominated the 1st round leaving Mir’s face bruised and cut. The rematch will do something the 1st matchup didn’t, go to the 2nd round. 2nd Round: Mir landed a couple of knees but Lesnar quickly took Mir down. Lesnar landed several wicked blows on the ground knocking Mir senseless when the referee jumped in. Mir’s face was bloodied, bruised and swollen. A completely dominating performance by Lesnar. In the post fight interview the crowd reigned down boos on Lesnar. Lesnar complied by pumping the crowd up with his antics.
Paulo Thiago 11-0 vs. Jon Fitch 22-3:Thiago comes to the cage off an impressive victory over Josh Koscheck while Fitch holds one of the best records in the history of the UFC. 1st round: Thiago grabbed a guillotine choke putting Fitch in a difficult position. Fitch finally escaped attempting a kimura. A very technical 1st round with Thiago winning. 2nd round: Fitch landed a takedown to start the 2nd round gaining top position. Thiago eventually got the fight back to their feet where Fitch promptly took him back to the ground. Another technical round this time Fitch gets the nod. 3rd round: Fitch lands a takedown early in the round. Thiago managed to escape and attempted an anaconda choke. Fitch avoided the submission attempt and gained the top position. Fitch turned Thiago sinking in both hooks and grabbed Thiago’s back. Fitch dominated the 3rd round which should give him a 29-28 victory. An impressive victory by Jon Fitch. Official Decision: Jon Fitch wins via Unanimous Decision
A great night of action at the historic UFC 100. The level of depth within the UFC continues to expand and will not miss a beat despite the stacked card at UFC 100. UFC 101 will be held on August 8th and includes Kenny Florian vs. UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn as well as Forrest Griffin vs. Anderson Silva in a Light Heavyweight bout. It only gets better MMA fans!
