UFC 105 Results: UFC 105 Recap & Fight ResultsUFC 105 took place on November 14, 2009 at the Manchester Evening News Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom and was a free UFC event televised on Spike TV. The main event for UFC 105 featured UFC legend Randy "The Natural" Couture making the cut back down to Light Heavyweight (205 lbs) to face another former UFC Heavyweight, Brandon "The Truth" Vera. Several local favorites from England were also be in action as former The Ultimate Fighter 9 coach Michael Bisping and TUF 9 contestants James Wilkes, Ross Pearson, Nick Osipczak and Andre Winner as well as local favorite Dan Hardy. The official UFC 105 results are in and listed below for reference.
Aaron Riley vs. Ross PearsonExperience was supposed to be a huge factor in the UFC 105’s opening bout that was broadcast on Spike TV Saturday night, as 40-fight vet Aaron Riley battled 12-fight vet and “TUF” 9 winner, Ross Pearson. Pearson threw all the experience talk out of the octagon on his way to a 2nd round TKO of Riley. The fight was never really close as Pearson took command from the opening bell, using his clinch game as his mode of operation. Pearson delivered knees to all parts of Riley’s body, which caused significant damage. A confused Riley was helpless with no defensive answer for Pearson’s aggressiveness. Finally in the 2nd round, Pearson grabbed Riley with his thai-clinch and put the finishing touches on the fight by opening up a cut on the bridge of his nose that the octagon-side doctor found too severe to continue. The official decision rewarded Pearson with a 2nd round TKO at the 4:38 mark. His overall record improves to 10-3, including a perfect 2-0 start in his UFC career. Riley, the experienced veteran, falls to 28-12-1 overall and 2-4 inside the octagon. His UFC future remains uncertain as he has been defeated twice in his last three bouts.
James Wilks vs. Matt BrownAnother “TUF” 9 winner, James Wilks, was in action on the main card at UFC 105, taking on “TUF” 7 contestant and all-around tough-guy, Matt Brown. Both welterweights took their turns as the aggressor during the first two rounds of their bout. In the 3rd round it was Wilks that came close to finishing his opponent with a deep kimura-submission attempt. Brown dealt with the kimura, escaped danger, and transitioned into dominant position by mounting his British-born opponent. From there he began his assault by reigning down punches on a defenseless Wilks to force the stoppage. Prior to his stint on TUF 7, Brown owned a mediocre 7-6 record, but with the 3rd round TKO (2:27), he improves his record to 11-7, including a 4-1 record in the UFC. Brown, with his third consecutive win, stakes his claim as a serious contender in the welterweight division. Wilks is now 6-3 overall and 1-1 within the UFC welterweight division.
Michael Bisping vs. Denis KangMaking his first appearance since his devastating KO loss to Dan Henderson at UFC 100, Britain’s own Michael “The Count” Bisping picked himself back up from an early knockdown to force a 2nd round stoppage against a game Denis Kang during a main card bout at UFC 105. Kang, who is little-known but widely respected in MMA circles, wasn’t able to finish a downed Bisping early in the 1st round. So Bisping, who had nearly the entire Manchester crowd cheering him on, used the 2nd round to gain control. After securing a takedown, “The Count” began to cause damage on the Canadian with strikes from top position. Although Kang made it back to his feet a second time, Bisping finished off the TKO with several unanswered strikes to the head at the 4:24 mark in the 2nd round. The victory helps Bisping regain some of the progression he lost after UFC 100. He still has won three of four and improves to 19-2 overall and 8-2 inside the octagon. Kang falls to 32-12-1 overall and 1-2 inside the octagon. Although he was defeated, he probably is safe when the next series of cuts are made.
Dan Hardy vs. Mike SwickDan “The Outlaw” Hardy earns the next shot at 170-pound King, George St. Pierre, with his unanimous decision victory over Mike Swick in the night’s co-main event. After the 1st round, neither Hardy nor Swick stood out as a future number one contender. “The Outlaw” began to emerge as the aggressor during the 2nd round by wobbling Swick with a hard right hand then again later in the round with another bomb. Hardy sealed it up in the final frame by sending Swick across the cage courtesy of a looping right hand. “Quick” was able to hold on for the round but wasn’t able to produce any more offense the remainder of the bout. The decision was fairly straight forward with scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28. Hardy has been victorious in seven consecutive bouts; his 23-6 record is solid as is his 4-0 start to his UFC career. Swick, who has had a rough time staying healthy, loses for the first time as a welterweight and falls to 14-3 overall and 9-2 inside the octagon.
Randy Couture vs. Brandon VeraForty-six year old Randy “The Natural” Couture returned to the light-heavyweight division with solid results after earning a grueling three-round unanimous decision victory in the UFC 105 main event over Brandon “The Truth” Vera. This fight was a true contrast of styles, as Couture tried to take control with body-locks and takedowns, whereas Vera tried to utilize his muay-thai striking style. The 1st round was all Couture, as he spent almost the entire round with a body lock working for a takedown. Vera made the fight close with a momentum-turning 2nd round highlighted by a body kick that sent Couture flying to the ground. Couture survived the kick and was able to score with his dirty boxing enough during the 3rd to sway the judge’s decision in his favor. The UFC Hall-of-Famer improves to 17-10 overall, which includes a 14-7 record inside the octagon. Brandon Vera drops just his fourth career bout. His 7-4 promotional record includes a 3-2 mark as a LHW fighter. Both fighters, with their competitive styles, remain in the hunt for important main card bouts on future cards.
