The event was headlined by top Light Heavyweights Rashad Evans facing Thiago Silva and was broadcast live on Pay Per View. Our recap of UFC 108 as well as the official UFC 108 results are here at ProFighting-fans.com now the fights are complete.
Dan Lauzon vs. Cole MillerCole Miller (16-4) was able to steer his career back in the right direction after suffering a TKO loss in September by locking in an inverted triangle submission in his preliminary bout with Dan “The Upgrade” Lauzon (12-3). Miller’s performance was good enough to earn himself a $50,000 “Submission of the Night” bonus. Lauzon took the early advantage by getting the better of the stand-up exchanges, even dropping the American Top Team fighter with a hard left hand in the 1st round. Miller recovered, and after the fight went to the ground, transitioned into a beautiful inverted triangle submission. A puzzled and twisted Lauzon was forced to submit at the 3:05 mark in the 1st round. Miller, a veteran of TUF 5, improved his organizational record to a respectable 5-2. The victory was his fourth stoppage and third submission inside the octagon. Lauzon, who was fighting for only the second time in the promotion and first time in over 3 years, has his 8-fight winning streak stopped. He is 0-2 inside the octagon overall.
Martin Kampmann vs. Jacob VolkmannIn a high speed welterweight contest, Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann (16-3) used his precise striking to get the fight to the floor and submitted Jacob “Christmas” Volkmann (9-2) at 4:03 of the 1st round via guillotine choke. It was a fairly even striking battle through the first three minutes, however when Volkmann lunged forward with one of his combination attempts, “The Hitman” caught him flush on the jaw sending him to the canvas. Although Volkmann was able to temporarily recover, Kampmann waited until he tried to get back to his feet to lock in a guillotine choke from a standing position. Kampmann, who was coming off a September knockout loss, wins his third fight out of his last four attempts and re-establishes himself as a 170-pound contender. He is now 7-2 overall inside the octagon. Volkmann, a Minnesota Martial Arts Academy fighter, suffers his second defeat in as many UFC chances. He lost a decision in November against Paulo Thiago at UFC 106 and may have to put together a couple wins outside the organization before he returns to fight in the UFC.
Junior dos Santos vs. Gilbert YvelJunior “Cigano” dos Santos (10-1) solidifies himself as a legitimate heavyweight contender with his 1st round drubbing of UFC newcomer Gilbert “The Hurricane” Yvel (36-14-1). “Cigano” earned the TKO victory at the 2:07 mark of the very 1st round. Yvel came out swinging using his unique skill set, however he wasn’t able to cleanly land one of his trademark heavy bombs. Dos Santos did, connecting with a solid left hand that sent Yvel crashing to the floor. The Brazilian quickly jumped on Yvel, finishing him off with several unanswered ground and pound strikes. Yvel argued the stoppage with referee Herb Dean; however a review revealed that the stoppage was warranted. Dos Santos now has five consecutive victories overall including four wins in as many chances in the UFC. With TKO/KO victories over Fabricio Werdum, Stefan Struve, Mirko Cro Cop, and Gilbert Yvel, he has to be at the top of a very short list of heavyweight contenders. Yvel falls in his initial trip to the octagon and has lost two of his last three fights overall.
Jim Miller vs. Duane LudwigJim Miller (16-2) had to deal with a couple of different opponent changes for his UFC 108 main card bout, although all of the uncertainty didn’t seem to bother the New Jersey native. Miller finished UFC-returnee Duane “Bang” Ludwig (27-10), who took the fight on two-week notice, with an armbar submission at the 2:31 mark in the 1st round. Miller and Ludwig seemed to take turns landing combinations for much of the first 2:00. After the exchanges, Miller dropped a counter left hand on Ludwig that sent him down to the floor on his back. Miller immediately jumped on top, and after transitioning to mount position, locked his armbar in and forced Ludwig to tap out. Miller wins his third UFC fight in a row and his fifth in six trips. His name is quickly rising in the lightweight ranks, and with another victory over a quality opponent, he may find himself in the hunt for the title. Ludwig, who was 2-0 in previous UFC fights, loses his second fight in his last three attempts. Despite the 1st round stoppage loss, he should get another opportunity before having to rebuild his resume once again.
Joe Lauzon vs. Sam StoutIn a very entertaining lightweight match-up, Sam “Hands of Stone” Stout (15-5-1) put on an impressive striking display on his way to a unanimous decision victory over a very tough Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon (17-5). Both fighters received a $50,000 bonus for their part in the “Fight of the Night.” Stout overcame an early armbar submission attempt by rolling into his opponent and making it back to his feet. From his feet is where he did his damage landing combination after combination throughout much of the three-round contest. Lauzon proved to be extremely tough, after he wouldn’t allow Stout to finish him despite several close calls. Stout now evens his UFC record up at 4-4, and with his second straight octagon win, begins to climb the long ladder that is the lightweight title picture. Lauzon came into the bout with only one loss in his last nine fights, however drops his UFC record to 5-2 with his second loss in his last four fights.
Dustin Hazelett vs. Paul DaleyPaul “Semtex” Daley (23-8-2) earned his second consecutive knockout victory in the UFC by finishing submission specialist Dustin “McLovin” Hazelett (14-5) with a KO at 2:24 of the 1 st round. The early knockout victory was good enough to earn Daley the “Knockout of the Night” award that was worth $50,000. Hazelett knew to have a chance against Daley he would have to get the fight to the ground. Unfortunately, that chance didn’t come, after trading strikes and leg kicks, Daley landed a heavy left hand to the jaw of Hazelett that sent him to the floor on his backside. “Semtex” immediately jumped on and pounded a barely awake Hazelett out with strikes from the top. Daley is now 2-0 in the UFC welterweight division against a pair of quality opponents. His current run should get him a chance at one of the top three welterweights in the organization. While he vaults to the top of the 170-pound division, Hazelett plummets dropping his first fight in his last four attempts. He is now 5-3 overall underneath the UFC banner.
Rashad Evans vs. Thiago SilvaRashad “Suga” Evans (19-1-1) puts himself back near the top of the 205-pound division with a well-though-out game plan against dangerous Brazilian striker, Thiago Silva (14-2) in the main event at UFC 108. Evans won the unanimous decision taking the 1st and 2nd rounds and giving up the last round to Silva; all three scorecards posted 29-28 results. Evans executed his game plan perfectly throughout the first two rounds utilizing his world-class wrestling as well as his quickness and athleticism. Evans landed numerous takedown attempts, many of which converted with impressive slams, throughout rounds 1 and 2. However, midway through the 3 rd and final round of his main event bout, Silva caught Evans with a right hand that put him on his back for the first time of the night. Silva, who seemed to be very tired, wasn’t able to capitalize on his advantageous position, as Evans used his experience to make it to the end of the round and hang on for the decision victory. Evans put himself in solid position for a future fight with TUF 10 coach Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and a chance to regain the #1 contender spot. Evans is now 9-1-1 inside the octagon. Silva drops his second bout in his last three fights and is 5-2 in his 2½ years with the organization.
