UFC 109 took place on February 6, 2010 in Las Vegas and was televised on Pay Per View. The UFC 109 event saw many decision fights and a surprising outcome in the Middleweight division and the official UFC 109 results are here at ProFighting-fans.com now that the fights are complete.

UFC 109 took place last Saturday night, and in the span of four hours a lot transpired in the MMA universe. Before the event, 22 fighters came in hoping to fulfill their dreams and propel themselves to the top of the UFC. Here is where the 22 mixed martial artists stand now in their respective divisions, the UFC, and MMA following the event.

UFC 109 Results - Preliminaries

Rolles Gracie vs. Joey Beltran

Loser: Rolles Gracie – The worst performance ever by a Gracie, and arguably one of the most embarrassing performances in MMA of all time. Rolles looked like he belonged on The Ultimate Fighter 10 with his terrible cardio and obsolete striking. The sad thing is he probably would’ve lost in the Preliminary Round of the show. His future in the UFC looks bleak, a potential showdown with Kimbo is possible as a way to give Kimbo a win over a “name.” Otherwise, it looks like Rolles may be fighting somewhere else next time he puts on 4 oz gloves.

Winner: Joey Beltran – In a span of less than a month Beltran defeated Houston Alexander at 5150 Combat League / Xtreme Fighting League’s latest event and then captured a victory over a Gracie in the UFC. Even still, his win wasn’t that impressive thanks in part to Gracie nearly having a heart attack in the Octagon. A more formidable opponent would tell us where Beltran stands in the light heavyweight division, and with a four fight UFC contract, it’s only a matter of time before we found out.

Brian Stann vs. Phil Davis

Loser: Brian Stann – It was a disappointing night for Stann, being unable to show his striking prowess due to Davis’ dominant wrestling. Stann was left with nothing to do in the fight, but protect himself from a beating on the ground. With a two-fight UFC win streak prior to this fight, Stann is sure to have at least a couple of fights left to prove himself in the Octagon. In the meantime, expect him to be working on his wrestling to prevent a night like this from occurring again.

Winner: Phil Davis – Davis looked how every other world class wrestler looks when they first start out in MMA; the ability to take the fight to the ground and control the opponent for the duration of the match, but an inability to finish the fight. It was an impressive win for Davis being only his fifth fight, and he certainly showed potential to become a top contender in the LHW division, but he must work on all facets of his game before there are any talk of title bouts and championships.

Melvin Guillard vs. Ronnys Torres

Loser: Ronnys Torres – He shocked a lot of people with his ability to stand and strike with Guillard, but his inability to get the takedown and keep Guillard on the ground were what cost him the fight. It was a close decision loss, and being that Torres hadn’t fought in over a year and a half, his stock doesn’t drop too far. However, he certainly showed that he won’t be one of the UFC top lightweights anytime soon as the talented wrestlers in the division will give him more problems than Guillard. If Torres wants to be a top fighter in the organization he’s going to need to work on his wrestling and take his striking to another level, otherwise he will not make it in the deepest division of the UFC.

Winner: Melvin Guillard – In his first fight trained with Greg Jackson, Guillard showed improvement. He managed to keep his focus throughout the entire fight, never making a costly mistake and showed a great ability to get back to his feet against a top BJJ player. He was able to win a close decision by reversing Torres and taking full mount to win the final round. A fight against Sean Sherk or Tyson Griffin might be next in line for him as he journeys to a title shot in 2011 (or so he thinks).

Mac Danzig vs. Justin Buchholz

Loser: Justin Buchholz – This loss likely spells the end for Justin in the UFC. It was a hard fought fight which ended in a close decision. He has shown improvement from his last fight, and being only 26, with more training he may eventually make his way back into the Octagon. But for now, expect to see Justin fighting for smaller organizations after this loss.

Winner: Mac Danzig – He needed the win to save his UFC career and he got it. While Danzig didn’t win in impressive fashion, he lives to fight another day. Hopefully in the time between now and his next fight, he can find that spark he had prior to and during TUF 6 which propelled him to winning the competition. As for now, Danzig remains in the dungeons of UFC lightweight division.

UFC 109 Results - Main Card

Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg

Loser: Frank Trigg – From his walkout, to his introduction, Trigg looked like he hadn’t broken a sweat in days. His body language read knockout, and that’s exactly what happened. This is likely the last fight Trigg will have in the UFC, and depending upon how much he still wants to train, may be his last. A tough way to go out for ol’ Twinkletoes.

Winner: Matt Serra – Serra demonstrated once again that he is a threat to any fighter in WW division with the power that lies in his hands. He came into the fight with a smart game-plan, not wasting any energy trying to takedown a good wrestler in Frank Trigg, and instead opted to stand and trade. It paid off for Sera as he took home Knockout of the Night honors for UFC 109. His next fight will most likely be against a top ten WW to see how well Serra can handle himself with the young bucks in the UFC’s WW division.

Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller

Loser: Dan Miller – A fight expected to be Fight of the Night turned out to be a dud. Miller was out-boxed standing, and out grappled on the ground. While Maia is no slouch, if Miller ever wants to be a top fighter in the division he will need to improve his striking and takedown defense drastically. His Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is great, and one of the top in the division, but as Joe Rogan aptly put it, Maia’s jiu-jitsu is “from another planet.”

Winner: Demian Maia – It was a good win for Maia against a game Miller, but his decision victory was nothing to write home about. With this win, Maia is easily a top five middleweight, but not impressive enough to move him into the three spot. A rematch with Nate Marquardt could be in his near future, as could a showdown with the loser of the Silva/Belfort title fight.

Paulo Thiago vs. Mike Swick

Loser: Mike Swick – It was only a couple of months ago, November to be exact, that Mike Swick was on top of the WW division and with a victory over Dan Hardy, would be fighting for the welterweight crown. But as time rolls on things change, and boy has the career of Swick changed. In fact in just a few short months its been turned upside down. Swick demonstrates great technique on his feet, but with little power and a mediocre chin, he poses no threat to the top fighters in the WW division. This night may have marked the last time Swick is considered a top contender in the UFC. Unless he changes something drastically in his game to give himself an edge, Swick may be nothing more than the gatekeeper of the UFC WW division.

Winner: Paulo Thiago – If you didn’t know whether he was Thiago Paulo or Paulo Thiago, you do now. Next to Chael Sonnen, Paulo Thaigo had the most impressive performance at UFC 109, winning Submission of the Night honors against Mike Swick. Thiago displayed decent technique on his feet, but more importantly, great power. When he dropped Swick in round 2 of their fight, he showed that his KO of Josh Koshcheck at UFC 95 was no fluke. He immediately capitalized on the knockdown of Swick and submitted him with a beautiful D’arce choke. With this victory, Thaigo becomes a top 5 WW who poses a threat to each and every fighter both on the feet and on the ground. Look for his next fight to be against another top 5 WW like fellow Brazilian Thiago Alves or American Jon Fitch.

Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen

Loser: Nate Marquardt – Nate is a terrific fighter and worthy of all the hype he was getting pre-UFC 109. Both excellent on his feet and on the ground, Nate is a terror to fight, but as was shown Saturday night, not if you’re a world class wrestler like Chael Sonnen. Nate was dominated on his back for three rounds, and his limited ability to pose a threat in such a position was demonstrated the whole fight. Not all was lost though, he did open a nasty cut with a slicing elbow in round 2 that made blood pour onto him and the mat, and, as Chael said himself, almost choked Sonnen unconscious with a guillotine in round 3. Even with this loss, Nate is still top 4 in the MW division, and a rematch with Maia or a fight with the loser of Silva/Belfort looks imminent.

Winner: Chael Sonnen – No one’s stock rose higher Saturday night than Chael Sonnen’s with a dominating upset victory over Nate Marquardt. There was an onslaught of terrific sound bytes provided by Sonnen leading up to the fight, "This guy is no more real than the Loch Ness Monster. And if he needs me to expose him then I will,” (talking about Anderson Silva), just to show an example, and while he showed he could talk the talk pre-fight, he demonstrated in the fight that he can walk the walk as well. He dominated Nate on the ground for three rounds, survived a nasty cut to his forehead, and outlasted a fight-ending guillotine in the third. He was literally put through the grinder to prove he was worthy of a title shot, and prove he did. Sonnen’s wrestling is top notch, and the striking displayed against Okami showed he could hold his own on the feet. Whether or not he could beat the winner of the Silva/Belfort title bout is an answer we’ll have to wait to see, he certainly showed he has the ability.

Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman

Loser: Mark Coleman – It was a sad night for the UFC Hall of Famer as he was outclassed in what is likely his last outing in the UFC. His decision to stand on his feet and bang with Randy was not smart, and his age showed, as he looked slow and stiff against a man even older than himself. For all the points he gained with his win over Stephan Bonnar, they were subsequently lost and destroyed never to be seen again with his obliteration at the hands Randy Couture. Hopefully he chooses to retire, but if we’ve learned anything about Mark Coleman over the years it’s that he’s highly competitive and stubborn, all the markings for a man who won’t leave the sport until he’s forced to.

Winner: Randy Couture – With his impressive performance Saturday night, Randy showed the world that, “Age ain’t nothing but a number, throwing down ain’t nothing but a thang.” The older man looked younger in this fight, and Randy for the first time in his last three fights, thanks in part to Mark Coleman, looked fast. The consequences of how Randy and Mark approached MMA from when they first started out in the UFC in 1996 and 1997 till now was shown tonight. Randy, from the beginning, worked on every aspect of his game, from wrestling to boxing, he wanted to be an all-around fighter, while Coleman always thought his superior wrestling ability would be good enough to account for any shortcomings on his feet and the ground. These different trajectories clashed tonight, and Coleman was exposed by Randy for his one-dimensional fight game. From here, according to Dana White, it looks like they are going to give Randy a title shot while he’s still “young.” So expect him to take on the winner of the Machida/Shogun fight sometime in the summer in what will likely be his final attempt at a title. He showed Saturday night that his wrestling ability alone is better than any of the top LHWs fighting now, and if he is to compete against the terrific strikers the make LHW their home in the UFC, he will have to use his wrestling like a crutch.

Rising Prelim Fighter: Phil Davis

Biggest Loser of the Night: Rolles Gracie (Followed ever so closely by Mark Coleman)
