UFC 116 “Lesnar vs. Carwin” Recap
George Sotiropoulos vs. Kurt PellegrinoIn the night’s first pay-per-view bout, Australian George Sotiropoulos showed just why he is on the up-and-up in the UFC lightweight division by outlasting Kurt Pellegrino for three rounds and the unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) victory. It was clearly all Sotiropoulos in rounds one and two. Pellegrino was dropped early in the fight during the 1 st round. Sotiropoulos was the better fighter both on his feet and on his back. He landed numerous punching combinations in the stand-up and controlled Pellegrino on the ground as well. Pellegrino finally found an opening during the 3 rd and final round when he landed a well-timed knee that sent Sotiropoulos flying backwards. Unfortunately for Pellegrino, that knee came with only seconds on the clock. He may have put it on his lanky opponent with that knee, but it proved to be too little too late. With his sixth straight octagon victory, Sotiropoulos puts his name among the lightweight elite. The 32 year-old former TUF 6 competitor is now 13-2 overall and 6-0 in the UFC. Pellegrino, who joked about retiring with a loss, had his four-fight win streak snapped. The 8 year pro is now 15-5 overall and 7-5 within the organization. He remains near the upper echelon of lightweight fighters.
Stephan Bonnar vs. Krzysztof SoszynskiIn a pivotal rematch from their UFC 110 main card bout, “The American Psycho” Stephan Bonnar earned some redemption from his TKO-cut loss last February by TKO’ing (3:08) his Polish-born opponent during the 2 nd round of their pay-per-view contest. Both fighters from this rematch were rewarded with “fight of night” honors. In typical Bonnar fashion, he took just as much damage as he was able to dish out. Soszynski looked like he picked up where the two left off 5 months ago by cruising to an early lead landing several heavy blows to the body and face of Bonnar. Bonnar came out for the 2 nd with a badly bloodied face, but didn’t fold. After taking more shots early in the 2 nd, he landed a well placed knee to the face of “The Polish Experiment” and sent him buckling to the ground. Bonnar pounced on top of Soszynski and added countless punch after unanswered punch before Herb Dean called a stop to the action. Bonnar gets the much-needed victory and stops his three-fight losing streak that spanned over three years. He improves his record to 12-7 and evens his UFC mark at 6-6. Soszynski drops his second bout in his last three. He falls to 19-10-1 overall and to 4-2 in the organization. Both Bonnar and Soszynski remain firmly planted in the middle of the LHW division.
Chris Lytle vs. Matt BrownAfter escaping trouble early in the bout, blue-collar welterweight Chris “Lights Out” Lytle was able to lock in a fight-ending arm bar submission in the 2 nd round of their pay-per-view contest last night. The finish by Lytle came at the 2:02 mark when Brown was forced to tap out. Both fighters came out swinging as advertised, however it was the ground where the bout was decided. In typical slugger fashion, both Lytle and Brown landed some heavy shots while standing, but when the fight was forced to the ground it took a different life. It was Brown, who almost forced the submission stoppage during the 1 st round when he nearly choked Lytle out with a guillotine. There was little doubt that Lytle wouldn’t escape and make a full recovery. He did just that during the 2 nd round when he transitioned to side mount and slapped on a triangle choke. From that position, Lytle made it easier by grabbing Brown’s arm and converting on a straight armbar. This, the third straight UFC victory, puts Lytle in a relevant position when speaking about 170-lb. contenders. Although losing out on“submission of night” honors, he does pick up the victory and improve his overall record to 28-17-5 and 8-9 in the UFC. Brown suffers back-to-back submission losses and falls by submission for the sixth time in his career. He falls to 11-9 in his career and 4-3 in the UFC. While former TUF 4’s Lytle leaps toward the top of the division, TUF 7’s Brown desperately needs a win to keep his job.
Chris Leben vs. Yoshihiro AkiyamaAfter replacing MMA legend Wanderlei Silva on short notice and coming off one of his most impressive victories two weeks ago, confidence was at an all time high for surging middleweight Chris “The Crippler” Leben. He took another significant step in his UFC 116 co-main event bout when he submitted Japanese star Yoshihiro Akiyama with only 20-seconds remaining in the bout. The 3 rd round (4:40) triangle choke submission earned him “co-fight of the night” honors, but more importantly saved Leben from going to the scorecards where it looked as if he were losing. Akiyama was dominant throughout the 1 st round, but, in particular on the ground, where he nearly submitted his Oregon-born opponent on three different occasions. Leben fought through it, as he did during the 2 nd round when Akiyama connected with several hard strikes that froze Leben. He survived and made it all the way back during the 3 rd frame when he took advantage of a quickly fatiguing Akiyama by catching him in a triangle choke submission. With two victories in the last two weeks and three consecutive overall, Leben appears to be on the fast track to middleweight contention. He improves to 21-6 overall and a respectable 11-5 within the octagon barrier. Akiyama loses his first bout since March 2005 and falls to 13-2, 2 NC overall and 1-1 in the UFC. While it looks like Leben will get the next crack at Wandy, Akiyama may have to fight a youngster on his way to the top-level middleweight fighters.
UFC 116 Main Event: Shane Carwin vs. Brock LesnarBrock Lesnar survives yet again, however this time it was in the octagon and not for his life. In true champion fashion, Lesnar recovered from Shane Carwin’s 1 st round onslaught to secure a 2 nd round submission (2:19) victory to unify the UFC Heavyweight Titles. For his comeback efforts, Lesnar was rewarded with a substantial bonus for his effort in “submission of the night” honors. UFC Interim Champ, Carwin, came out and, as expected swinging away with his heavy hands. It was his dangerous right uppercut that sent Lesnar to the ground where he covered up. The rare sight of Lesnar folded over on the ground was made even more unbelievable when Carwin added strike after strike from top position. Lesnar barely did enough to keep the fight going, but he found a way to show referee Josh Rosenthal that he was defending. He took Carwin to the 2 nd round for the first time in his career, and, placed the fatigued Colorado-native firmly on his back with a takedown. Once on top, Lesnar moved into side mount where he was able to finish Carwin with the fight-ending arm triangle choke. Lesnar, now 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the UFC, will face AKA’s Cain Velasquez for his third title defense. Carwin had his 12-fight unbeaten streak stopped as well as his four-fight UFC streak. He still remains at the top of the Heavyweight contenders’ line despite the loss.
