Amir Sadollah vs. Peter Sobotta TUF 7 winner Amir Sadollah (4-2) recorded a much needed victory to remain relevant in the 170-pound division by outworking German-based Peter Sobotta (8-4) to a unanimous decision victory on the UFC 122 main card. It was obvious over the course of the three-round affair that Sadollah was sticking to his muay-thai heavy game plan. Sadollah repeatedly handed out sharp kicks and punches to the face and body of the 23-year old prospect. Sadollah took all three rounds, however Sobotta had a chance early in the opening round to gain an advantage by taking the back of Sadollah. Sadollah shook him off and cruised to the unanimous decision victory. For Sadollah, the victory puts him back in the middle of the welterweight picture. He has been victorious in three of his last four bouts, losing only to Dong Hyun-Kim at UFC 114 this past May. Sobotta will likely have to fight his way back into the UFC after losing in three straight octagon appearances. Dennis Siver vs. Andre Winner German-native Dennis Siver (17-7) stepped up and filled the co-main event role nicely as he picked up another important octagon victory by defeating TUF 9 runner-up Andre Winner (11-5-1) in his homeland at UFC 122. In what was thought to be an early pre-fight “Fight of the Night” candidate, it was Siver who single-handedly produced fireworks on center stage. It was clear that the quick Brit, Winner, was being cautious with kickboxing specialist Siver throughout the early going. After a couple of quick “stick and moves” by both lightweight competitors, Siver countered Winner with a well placed left hand that put him on his back in the center of the octagon. Although the fight could have probably been stopped at that point, the referee allowed it to continue and Siver switched from striker to grappler. After hitting the ground, Siver jumped on Winner’s back and slipped his arm under the chin of his opponent and choked him out at the 3:37 mark of the opening round. The rear naked choke victory vaults Siver into contention in the UFC lightweight division. He has now won back-to-back fights and five out of his last six octagon brawls. Winner, however, looks to be on shaky ground, he has lost back-to-back fights after posting wins in two of his first three promotional appearances. Duane Ludwig vs. Nick Ospiczak MMA veteran Duane “Bang” Ludwig (20-11) picked up a hard-fought split decision victory over a fatigued “Slick” Nick Ospiczak (5-3) in a UFC 122 main card bout. The switch back to welterweight turned out to be a crucial decision for Ludwig, who was already on shaky ground with the promotion. The action began with a fierce pace as England’s Nick Ospiczak hammered away and dropped Ludwig in the opening round, however was unable to finish the durable American. That would prove to be vital, as Ludwig fought back in the middle round earning two of the three in the final round, as Ospiczak slowed considerably allowing Ludwig to pick him apart in the standing position and seal the victory to his favor. Ludwig’s victory was his first inside the octagon in over four years. It also likely saved his roster spot with the company; he had lost back-to-back bouts since returning to the UFC last year. Ospiczak is probably on his way out of the organization, he has lost three straight bouts, all coming by way of decisions. Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Goran Reljic The first round saw “The Polish Experiment” continually move forward connecting with sharp jabs and hooks, however Reljic made the scoring interesting by converting with two powerful double-leg takedowns as well. The middle round looked to be a lot of the same early on as Reljic properly placed Soszynski again on his backside, although could do nothing more. Soszynski recovered and used a solid clinch game to pick up some much-needed points in the final round to clinch. The victory was Soszynski’s second in his last three bouts and helps in his quest to climb towards the 205-pound contender status. Reljic, who posted an impressive victory in his UFC debut, is probably on his way out of the organization after dropping three consecutive octagon fights. Nate Marquardt vs. Yushin Okami It was widely believed that Nate Marquardt () would be the favorite in the number one contender’s match on top of the UFC 122 main card, however it was Japanese middleweight Yushin Okami () who out-scored Marquardt on his way to a unanimous decision victory and a berth in an upcoming 185-pound title bout. After some early peppering by both competitors, it was Marquardt who made the first dent in the scorecard with a takedown midway through the opening frame. Marquardt was unable to keep Okami there as the action returned to their feet, where he took advantage utilizing his much-improved stand-up game. Marquardt seemed to be hesitant throughout much of the fight, and Okami moved forward playing the role of aggressor throughout much of the 2nd and 3rd rounds to pick up the unanimous decision victory. Okami has now been in the octagon winner’s circle in his last three bouts and six of his past seven overall. While he will be fighting either Anderson Silva or Vitor Belfort in his next action, it is going to be hard for Marquardt to reach this position again. He has been in the top contender slot more than once, but his second loss in his last three bouts, likely demotes him to the middle of the 185-pound pack.
