UFC 123 Results: UFC 123 Fight Card Results
UFC 123 took place on November 20, 2010 at the Palace of Auburn Hills near Detroit, Michigan, and was a Pay Per View televised event. UFC 123 was headlined by two former UFC Light Heavyweight Champions as Quinton "Rampage" Jackson faced Lyoto Machida, and the UFC 123 fight card results are listed below. The UFC 123 fight card is listed below and be sure to check out our UFC 123 predictions leading up to the November 20 event. Also be sure to check back for the official UFC 123 results here at ProFighting-fans.com after the fights are complete.
Where Are They Now? UFC 123 EditionThis past weekend, the UFC made a visit to the Motor City and delivered an exciting night of fights with a star-studded lineup. Four former UFC champions battled on the card, as well as an elite group of rising stars. Below, ProFighting-Fans.com writer Curt Heinrichs makes his best guesses as to where the fighters may find themselves in their respective divisions and who they may be fighting next.
Quinton “Rampage” Jackson Former Light Heavyweight Champion Rampage Jackson showed signs of returning to his former self by defeating Lyoto Machida in UFC 123’s Main Event. Though some will dispute the decision victory (even Jackson himself stated that he feels Machida won the fight), what’s done is done. Dana White stated that there will be no discussion about a rematch between the former champs and that means Rampage will sit near the top of the Light Heavyweight division in a strange predicament: I don’t feel that Rampage has earned a title shot, but he belongs near the top. Could Jackson be a high level gatekeeper in the division? At this stage in the game, Jackson doesn’t deserve a shot at the title, which is up for grabs when Shogun Rua defends against Rashad Evans. Evans defeated Jackson in Rampage’s last match quite handily and Rampage didn’t come out and blow Machida’s doors off to prove he is still one of the elite. I would love to see Rampage take on the winner of the upcoming Jon Jones/Ryan Bader fight. With Bader and Jones squaring off early in 2011, the winner will establish himself as a strong contender in the division, and Rampage would get to test himself against a tough opponent before getting a crack at the title.
Lyoto Machida Machida’s efforts against Rampage seemed to be a case of “too little, too late,” and now he finds himself treading water outside of the top tier of the division. Machida has wins over both Rua and Rashad Evans, but he has lost his last 2 (and some could make the argument that he lost the first fight against Shogun), and doesn’t demonstrate the killer instinct that he showed against Thiago Silva or Rashad Evans. I’d like to see a matchup between Machida and either the loser of the Jones/Bader fight, or the winner of the upcoming Forrest Griffin/Rich Franklin fight. Both fights could be entertaining and would help to paint a more clear picture of the Light Heavyweight division.
BJ Penn The cat’s out of the bag on this one, as UFC President Dana White has already announced that Penn will face off against Jon Fitch. Though this is a shocking move, it will help solidify the welterweight ranks and guarantee that Penn will fight at least one more match in the welterweight division. The matchup also could have been due to the WEC merger, since the WEC’s Lightweights will join up with the UFC and Penn has twice shown that he can’t hang with the skills of Frankie Edgar. There can be no debating that Penn still has skills after looking at his dismantling of Diego Sanchez and Matt Hughes, but as always the questions marks surrounding Penn are his desire and conditioning.
Matt Hughes Hughes has accomplished lots in his storied UFC career, but in his dismantling at the hands of BJ Penn, he may have finally shown that the fight game has passed him by. There are rumors that Hughes may be lined up for a third match against Dennis Hallman, even though Hughes doesn’t want to fight that fight. I’m not completely convinced that Hughes should retire, though he showed that he no longer deserves to be ranked among the elite. I’d like to see Hughes face a Nate Diaz or Martin Kampmann, and if he embarrasses himself, it’s time for Hughes to move on from being a fighter.
Gerald Harris Harris looked tough in a loss to Maiquel Falcao, but the Brazilian derailed Harris’ rise to the top. I’d like to see Harris take on former pro boxer Marcus Davis, in what would potentially be an exciting fight.
Maiquel Falcao Falcao looked unnerved in his UFC debut when he won by decision against Gerald Harris. I’d like to see Falcao against submission ace C.B. Dollaway, in what could be a matchup of strength vs. strength. Another intriguing matchup could feature Falcao against Rousimar Palhares, who is coming off a loss against Nate Marquardt.
Phil Davis NCAA Wrestling Champion Phil Davis tacked on another win to his résumé against UFC veteran Tim Boetsch. Dana White has expressed that he doesn’t find Davis to be as big of a star as the media has made him out to be, but I am high on Davis, who has demonstrated that he has evolved into more than just a pure wrestler. A matchup between Davis and the loser of the Forrest Griffin/Rich Franklin match could be an appealing test of Davis’ skills. I could also see Davis matching up with Jason Brilz to determine a pecking order in the Light Heavyweight division.
Tim Boetsch Boetsch seemed to have been thrown to the lions against Davis, who has the edge in wrestling, striking, and apparently jiu-jitsu. If Tito Ortiz is looking to hang around in the UFC, he may have to rack up some wins, possibly against guys like Tim Boetsch, who could benefit from beating a big-name fighter like Tito.
George Sotiropoulos Australian submission wiz George Sotiropoulos doesn’t have to wait long to find out his next opponent: UFC President Dana White already has announced that George will be fighting German kickboxer Denis Siver in February in Australia. While I don’t particularly like this matchup, I can see the drawing power of two exciting international stars clashing. I think Sotiropoulos would be better served by facing some of the incoming WEC stars (perhaps Donald Cerrone?) to sort out the humongous Lightweight division.
Joe Lauzon After a long layoff due to injury, Lauzon returned with a dominant performance against Gabe Ruediger, but didn’t have the same outcome against Sotiropoulos. Lauzon should probably take on one of the incoming WEC Lightweights to see how the division will shake out.
