UFC 95: Sanchez vs. Stevenson from the O2 Arena in London, England was a pleasant surprise. While lacking a superstar fighter on the card, the show still was an all around success. It was full of stoppages and only two of the ten fights were decided by the judges. The fight was also a surprising hit on the money end of it as well. The show produced 13,268 fight fans at the arena. It also generated more than one million dollars, which had to be somewhat of a surprise. Lastly, the British fans got exactly what they wanted by seeing 3 of the 4 British fighters on the card leave successfully. Terry Etim vs Brian CobbEnglish fighter, Terry Etim was victorious in his return to the octagon. Etim simply outclassed the UFC rookie and earned the TKO win 0:10 into the 2nd round. The strategy was basic for the much taller Etim when in the octagon. Etim wanted to use his slight reach advantage to keep Brian “The Bandit” Cobb from taking him to the ground where he could utilize his superior wrestling skills. The first round began with the two fighters trying to “feel” their opponent out. Etim started the striking off with some beautiful inside leg kicks. Cobb, not liking the kicks on his leg caught the next kick and took Etim to the ground. However, when on the ground Cobb was unable to mount any type of offense and the two were eventually stood back on their feet by the referee. This routine of leg kicks (by Etim), takedowns (Cobb) and little action (both) prompted the referee to stand the two back up once again. The second round was little like the first by starting and ending with an explosion. Ten seconds into the second round Etim landed a head kick which dropped Cobb and put him on his back. Etim jumped on the confused Cobb and delivered two unanswered bombs from a standing position which led to the stoppage by the referee. Cobb argued that the stoppage was a bit premature and it may have been but the referee did fulfill his duties by protecting a fighter that is defenseless. The official decision is a TKO at 0:10 in the 2nd round. This win makes it two in a row for Terry Etim and on pace for a match up with a significant lightweight fighter. His record has improved to 12-2 overall and 3-2 within the UFC. Cobb was simply outclassed in his debut fight with the organization. His 9 fight win streak has ended and his overall MMA record drops to 15-5.
Paul Kelly vs Troy MandalonizPaul “Tellys” Kelly picked apart a very tough Troy “Rude Boy” Mandaloniz landing a variety of different strikes on his way to a unanimous decision victory. Kelly and Mandaloniz began the fight on a torrid pace which lasted throughout much of the first two rounds. Kelly, who trains with the Wolfslair Academy, looked greatly improved since his October 2008 submission loss to Marcus Davis. The first round looked as if both fighters were shot out of a cannon and into the ring. Both fighters traded combinations that were landing to the body and the head. Early on Mandaloniz had the advantage in strength, as he was pushing Kelly all over the octagon. Kelly wasn’t bullied for long as he landed several devastating body shots that looked as if they did some damage to the Hawaiian-born fighter. The second round featured a fresh Kelly and battered Mandaloniz. Madaloniz began the second looking very tired and pulled guard on Kelly right away. Mandaloniz did manage to get Kelly to the ground and even had position on his back for a short time. Kelly was able to reverse positions and ground and pound, shaking off a half-hearted armbar attempt from “Rude Boy”. The final round looked similar to the second as Mandaloniz looked very tired but hung tough with the rejuvenated Kelly. The two fighters traded for a short time, with Kelly landing combinations from the body to the head. With Kelly dominating the stand up game, Mandaloniz attempted another takedown, this time succeeding. When on the ground “Rude Boy” and Kelly traded positions more than one time. The end of the round was very similar to the rest of the fight with Kelly executing his ground and pound on Mandaloniz, who was unable to match the striking effort from Kelly. Kelly used his very precise striking ability to out point Mandaloniz on the judges’ scorecards. He improved his record to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the UFC. Madaloniz did a good job of surviving all three rounds but saw his record fall to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the UFC.
Per Eklund vs Evan DunhamEvan Dunham was successful in his debut bout in the UFC lightweight division. He took little time in impressing the UFC executives with a 1st round knockout of the Swedish fighter. The action began quickly as Dunham took Eklund down in a guillotine choke attempt. Eklund shrugged off the attempt and was back on his feet. Eklund stood with Dunham very little and tried to pull guard attempting to take Dunham’s arm with him. The armbar try failed again and the two were back face-to-face. As the lightweights squared off again Dunham dropped Eklund with a straight left. The straight left was followed by five unanswered ground and pound strikes that were to the face of a knocked-out Eklund. The referee was late to react but did wave off the fight before any other damage could be done. The official decision was a KO at the 2:14 mark of the 1st round. Eklund now will wait and see if he will get another chance to fight in the octagon. His 14-4-1 overall record is respectable but he now has lost 2 of 3 fights in the UFC, which usually doesn’t mean great things are ahead. Dunham, on the other hand, will almost definitely get another shot to put back-to-back wins together in his new fight home. He improves his overall win streak to 8 and keeps his undefeated record (8-0) as well.
Mike Ciesnolevicz vs Neil GroveThe heavyweight fight between Mike Ciesnolevicz and Neil “The Goliath” Grove was not the type of fight that a lot of people expected. Many expected Grove to use his karate background to stand and finish the wrestler, Ciesnolevicz. The exact opposite happened. Ciesnolevicz took advantage of a mistake by Grove and capitalized on it. He earned a submission (heel hook) win over the much larger Grove. The fight only lasted 1:03 but featured three different submission attempts. The first attempt came when Ciesnolevicz pulled guard on Grove only thirty seconds into the match. Ciesnolevicz quickly went for a leg lock that was matched by an ankle lock from Grove. It seemed as if Grove was getting the better of Ciesnolevicz when Grove suddenly tapped out. Ciesnolevicz had turned his leg lock to a heel hook that was well disguised. Not much was learned from either fighter other than the fact that heavyweights can pull submissions just like the smaller weight classes. Ciesnolevicz took advantage of an opportunity to fight in the UFC and will get another shot in the heavyweight division. Grove, with only his second career loss (7-2) should get another opportunity to use his strength in a UFC heavyweight bout.
Junior dos Santos vs Stefan StruveStefan Struve made his rookie fight in the octagon as one of the tallest competitors in UFC history. The 6’11” Struve, had his 5 fight win streak snapped as dos Santos continued his tear in the UFC heavyweight division. The 54 second TKO of Struve makes the Team Nogueira member a winner in both his UFC fights and 8 of 9 total. The dismantling of Struve was as impressive as his upset win over a heavy favored Fabricio Werdum at UFC 90. “Cigano” was able to get a body lock on the lanky Struve and demonstrate his power. As the two fighters were separating from the body lock, dos Santos connected flush with a combination of punches that not only dropped the Dutch fighter but made the referee put an immediate halt to the fight. Although Struve half-heartedly argued the decision, there was no question about this stoppage. Struve was not defending himself, as the referee gave him more than enough time to recover after being dropped. With his second TKO win in as many UFC fights dos Santos will surely see a top level heavyweight opponent in his next fight. He has now fought a total of 2:15 in two UFC fights.
Wilson Gouveia vs Nate MarquardtWilson Gouveias’ second fight in the middleweight division had a different result than his debut at middleweight. In his middleweight debut he ran right through Jason McDonald to a first round TKO victory. He was up against a different level of competition this fight when he met Nate “The Great” Marquardt. Marquardt outlasted Gouveia for a TKO win at the 3:10 point of the 3 rd round. The first round began with the two fighters trading leg kicks. Gouveia seemed determined to push forward trying to chase Marquardt all over the octagon. Marquardt tried to pick and choose his spots of execution by exchanging then retreating. The first round featured one takedown (Marquardt), one submission attempt (Gouveia), and an excellent knee from Marquardt to end the round. The second began much like the first by trading leg kicks. The pace picked up and both landed some damaging punches, knees and elbows. The second round may have been decided in the last 20-30 seconds when Marquardt unleashed a flurry of strikes that seemed to fluster Gouveia. Wilson Gouveia started the third round determined to try and get the KO. He knew he was behind on the scorecards which made him more anxious. He marched after Marquardt who was backpedaling. Gouvieia had his arm cocked and loaded to strike when Marquardt landed a right knee to the head. Gouveia, now stunned began to wilt as Marquardt followed the knee with a head kick, punch and another knee. After the combination of strikes Gouveia dropped and the referee called the action off. The win improves Marquardt’s UFC record to 7-2 and gives him a better chance to get back in the picture for a title shot. The loss makes Gouveia 1-1 in the middleweight division and 6-3 overall in the UFC. He will not be mentioned in the crowded picture for a middleweight title shot until he beats a legitimate middleweight contender.
Paulo Thiago vs Josh KoscheckPaulo Thiago made the most of a huge opportunity when he was matched up against Josh Koscheck in his first UFC fight. Koscheck is an elite welterweight fighter that only fights against top contenders. Thiago proved to the world that he may just be a top contender by upsetting Koscheck with a KO at 3:29 in the 1st round. The first round started with a Paulo Thiago kick. Thiago wanted to keep his distance from the dangerous KO artist. Koscheck countered the kick with an overhand right to Thaigo’s head. Koscheck continued to win the early stand up battle with his straight jabs and overhand punches. Thiago didn’t seem to be attempting to block any of Koschecks’ strikes. His hands were continually down when he wasn’t punching. Koscheck moved in for the big punch and was dropped when he got hit with a right uppercut and a left hook that were right on the target. Koscheck was visibly knocked out and not able to defend himself when the referee jumped in to stop the fight. Koscheck was upset and arguing the stoppage from the referee as the decision was called out by ringside announcer Bruce Buffer. Although Koscheck did not like the call it was by the rules and was justified. He will now need to work his way back up the welterweight division, as this loss makes it 2 losses in his last 3 fights. Thiago will continue his rise up the UFC welterweight division with his undefeated 11-0 record intact. He will also collect $40,000 for the KO of the Night bonus. His UFC future looks very bright.
Demain Maia vs Chael SonnenChael Sonnen made his return to the UFC one to remember at UFC 95. Unfortunately for him, it will be remembered for the wrong reasons. Demian Maia demonstrated once again why he is so dangerous and why he should be considered as the next contender for the middleweight belt. Maia made Sonnen his fourth Team Quest member that he has defeated in the UFC. Maia, who is a second degree black belt in jiu-jitsu, has been working with Wanderlei Silva on his striking. He wouldn’t need it tonight. He immediately went to the ground as the two engaged for the first time early in the first round. Sonnen was very careful in his movements as they got closer. Sonnen and Maia eventually hit the ground where Sonnen tried to land a couple jabs from the bottom position. The two fighters then switched positions until they quickly rose back to their feet. When they got back to their feet, Maia moved close to Chael Sonnen getting into position for a takedown. Maia did one better by not only taking him down but dropping him in a position that he immediately secured a triangle choke when they hit the mat. Sonnen tried to fight out of the triangle choke for a few moments but quickly realized that he would not escape this time. Maia won the official decision at 2:37 on the 1st round via submission (triangle choke). The win not only makes Maia 10-0 overall and 5-0 UFC but also makes him a perfect candidate to fight the winner of the upcoming Thales Leites/Anderson Silva title fight. Also with the win, Maia received the Submission of the Night award which comes with a $40,000 bonus. The loss makes Sonnen 1-3 over two different stints with the organization. His UFC future is very cloudy and undetermined at this time.
Dan Hardy vs Rory MarkhamDan “The Outlaw” Hardy took very little time in setting the pace of this welterweight bout. Hardy spent very little time caring about what Rory Markham was trying to do. Hardy jumped all over his opponent to secure his second straight win in the octagon. He looked every bit as impressive as his first victory in the UFC with his accurate striking. The first round started with Hardy utilizing his Tae Kwon Do background by connecting with leg kicks. Hardy’s leg kicks were answered by a sharp left hook that connected from Markham. Hardy quickly pressured Markham and didn’t give him any room to unleash his excellent head kicks. After Rory Markham just missed on a right hook, Hardy countered with a left hook of his own to drop his opponent. When on the ground, Hardy continued the onslaught with another right to completely put Markham out. The referee quickly jumped in and put a stop to the destruction. The win gives Hardy a record of 21-6 overall and puts him in line for a top level welterweight competitor. If he continues his evolution as a fighter Hardy will be at the top of the division for a very long time. The loss drops Markham’s MMA record to 16-5 overall and 1-1 UFC. He will need an impressive performance, if he gets the chance, to keep fighting in the #1 MMA promotion.
Diego Sanchez vs Joe StevensonAlthough the main event for UFC 95 didn’t have a title at steak it was still a match-up of two elite competitors who are heading in different directions. After a loaded fight card that featured 8 stoppages the main event put a cap on an exciting night of fights. Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez lived up to his name as he slowly but surely overwhelmed Joe “Daddy” Stevenson in a three round war that saw Sanchez awarded with the unanimous decision. The first round was one that saw Sanchez deliver precise punches that had Stevenson running back most of the round. Sanchez was clearly the better striker as he landed several combinations. Stevenson was competitive as he landed a few straight punches of his own. Sanchez had the better game plan as he hit Stevenson with uppercuts, jabs, straights, hooks, knees and kicks. Stevenson relied mostly on straight punches that connected but didn’t do much damage to “The Nightmare.” The second round had the two stand in the middle of the octagon and trade for the first 30 seconds of the round. Diego then promptly landed one of his best knees to the head of Stevenson thus sending him crashing to the mat. Always hard to finish off, Stevenson quickly recovered and managed to get back on his feet again. As the two engaged again Stevenson had his best opportunity of the night when he secured a standing guillotine choke. Sanchez realizing that the guillotine is one of “Daddy” best moves quickly nullified the choke by getting Stevenson in the air and slamming him to the mat to break him off the choke. The action-packed round continued as they traded failed submission attempts through the middle of the second. Sanchez continued to land more accurate punches and combinations compared to Stevenson. At the conclusion of the second round the two fighters demonstrated excellent striking with Sanchez coming out on top of that flurry as well. The final round started with Stevenson getting the better of the two at the start. When Diego failed in a takedown attempt they began to trade again with Diego landing the majority of the strikes. The third round also featured Stevensons’ last opportunity to submit Sanchez when he had his back for a short period of time. This attempt failed as well and so did his bid for the upset win. Diego simply outclassed Stevenson in every department possible. The judges agreed, making The Nightmare a winner in his debut in the lightweight division. The win marks Sanchez’ third in a row with the organization. The loss puts Stevenson in a tough position with 2 losses in a row and losing 3 of his last 4 fights. While Diego claims he is in the lightweight division permanently it is still too early to tell. Many believe that he can make a run at BJ Penn’s title. Others believe that a match up with the new and improved Kenny Florian would be better yet. One thing is for sure that after two losses in a row to top competitors, Diego is back and ready to put together another long win streak.
