UFC 99 Results: UFC 99 Results, Recap & Review
UFC 99 was filled with legends of the sport and fast rising prospects. Although no titles were at stake, future opportunities were on the line for several fighters. The German crowd cheered and jeered as several fights went the distance. In the end, Rich Franklin proved he is still one of the best fighters on the planet and Cain Velasquez silenced his doubters who felt he was all hype. A complete breakdown follows:
Cain Velasquez 5-0 vs. Cheick Kongo 24-4-1 - Heavyweight BoutTwo up and coming prospects in the heavyweight division with each looking for a shot at the UFC title. The classic wrestler vs. the striker matchup with Cain being an elite wrestler and Kongo an elite striker, the winner may be the next in line to face the winner of Mir/Lesnar. Kongo had a noticeable reach advantage and from the naked eye, looks like a superior physical specimen but in MMA that usually doesn’t matter. A very exciting 1st round with Kongo landing two wicked right hooks to start the fight which staggered Cain but Cain maintained his senses and grabbed a double leg takedown. From there Cain dominated the entire 1st round with several submission attempts and strikes from the mount. The 2nd round started in similar fashion with Kongo rocking Cain with a right hand to the temple, as in the 1st round Cain promptly took him down this time with a single leg. Cain dominated the 2nd round controlling the fight on the ground. In the 3rd round Kongo took Cain down but was unable to control the position. Cain quickly reversed it and took Kongo’s back and maintained control. Some questionable strategy employed by Kongo as he did not create distance instead would tie Cain up, then the fight would go to the ground. Official Decision: Cain Velasquez via Unanimous Decision
Mirko Cro Cop 24-6-2 vs. Mostapha Al-Turk 6-4 - Heavyweight BoutCro Cop is one of the greatest fighters in the history of the heavyweight division. Cro Cop was a legend in the Pride Fighting Championship but had a disappointing 1 st experience in the UFC with losses to Gabriel Gonzaga & Cheick Kongo. Cro Cop left the UFC and won 3 consecutive fights resulting in a txt message from Mirko to Dana White asking for a chance at redemption. His redemption came in the form of Mostapha Al-Turk. The 1 st round was slow with Mirko waiting to find an opening. Mirko exploded with several shots knocking Al-Turk to the canvas but was unable to finish him. The fight resumed in the stand up with Mirko landing a poke to the eye (undetected by the referee) which sent Mostapha to the ground. The referee quickly stopped the fight. Official Decision: Mirko Cro Cop via TKO in the 1st round
Ben Saunders 7-0-2 vs. Mike Swick 13-2 - Welterweight BoutA tremendous matchup with two long and lean fighters both looking to climb the Welterweight ladder to get a shot at champion, GSP. Saunders immediately pulled guard which resulted in Swick controlling the round until a minute left when the official stood them up. Saunders landed only one strike, a strong knee to Swick’s ribs. The 2nd round started slowly then with just over a minute left, Swick landed a barrage of punches knocking Saunders back then landed a fight ending shot to the temple. Official Decision: Swick via TKO in the 2nd round
Caol Uno 25-11-4 vs. Spencer Fisher 23-1 - Lightweight BoutA non-eventful 1st round with neither fighter doing much. Fisher did land a few shots which were enough to win the round. The 2nd round was very technical with both fighters showing excellent sprawls and escapes. A very close round to score but Uno should have edged this out. The chess match continued into the 3rd round as neither fighter could dictate their style. Uno tried for several takedowns as Fisher negated them until with less than a minute left Uno gained control landing several strikes. A close round to call, I have it 29-28 Fisher. Official Decision: Fisher via Unanimous Decision
Marcus “The Irish Hand Grenade” Davis 21-5 vs. Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy 21-6 - Welterweight BoutBoth fighters had plenty to say leading up to the fight as Hardy called Davis a fake Irishman. The 1st round started slowly with Davis measuring a takedown. Davis took Hardy to the mat and controlled the majority of the 1 st round but suffered a cut due to a Hardy elbow. The 2nd round was very close as Hardy landed a wicked knee to Davis’ chin. Marcus managed to survive and ended the round with a wicked left hook followed by an impressive takedown. In the 3rd round Davis controlled the early portion with a solid left hand then a takedown and submission attempt. Hardy escaped and brought the fight back to the stand up. Hardy took Davis down and landed an elbow which opened Davis up. Blood rand down Davis’ face to the point the referee asked the Doctor to look at it. The fight continued with Davis continually wiping blood from his face. The fight ended then Davis and Hardy gave the token hand shake. I scored the fight 29-28 Davis. Official Decision: Hardy via Split Decision As often happens, the judges scored the fight based on appearance. Davis looked the worse for wear but controlled the majority of the fight with Outlaw only really landing 3 shots in the entire fight. A tough loss for Davis.
Main Event Rich “Ace” Franklin 26-4 vs. Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva 32-9-1 (catch weight of 195lbs)Both fighters were at a crossroads in their career, each needing a victory to regain their place in the upper echelon of the UFC. The 1st round started slow with each fighter feeling out their opponent. Silva caught a Franklin kick and took him to the ground controlling the guard. Rich quickly got to his feet and took Silva to the ground. Rich landed some impressive punches and kicks, enough to win the 1st round. In the 2nd round Franklin was superior from a technical stand point until the latter part of the round as Silva landed several strikes. Rich was shaky on his feet and looked like he might be done. Rich landed a leg kick towards the end of the round wobbling Wanderlei. Both fighters survived the round on rubber legs. The 3rd round was very close with both fighters landing several strikes. Rich took Wand down near the end of the 3rd round which made a touch decision for the judges. I scored the fight 29-28 for Rich Franklin. Official Decision: Rich Franklin via a Unanimous Decision
