The people of Nashville sure got their moneys worth last night at the latest edition of Ultimate Fight Night, which was dedicated to the late great Charles “Mask” Lewis of TapouT. Two of the four televised fights could have won “fight of the night” honors in my opinion. It seemed to go by quick even though three fights went the distance and only one stopped early.

Junie Browning vs. Cole Miller

The night opened up with former TUF fighter Junie Browning and Cole Miller. It was the only fight that didn’t make it past the first round and it went basically how I thought it would.

The fight begins with Cole Miller landing some inside leg kicks and connecting with some punches. They get into the clinch and Junie scores a takedown by jumping on the back of Miller. They roll around for a minute then stand back up. Browning’s inexperience proved to be his downfall when he went for the takedown but left his head out. Miller jumped on the chance and put Browning in a guillotine until he tapped.

“Who’s overrated now!” the words of Cole Miller to Junie Browning just after the referee stopped the fight. Junie seemed to be trying not to mess up in his first big fight after the show, and Cole capitalized on it in his win.

Official Decision: Cole Miller wins by submission in the 1 st round.

Tyson Griffin vs. Rafael Dos Anjos

This was a very exciting fight. Tyson Griffin being the little ball of muscle that he is, mustered up enough fight to win this one. This could easily have been fight of the night if it wasn’t for the main event.

RD 1: Tyson Griffin was controlling the ring and moving Rafael to wherever he wanted. Griffin lands a nice strait right and gets the takedown. Rafael puts Tyson in some strange leg lock and you can tell your leg isn’t supposed to bend that way, (it even hurt me watching it). As they get back to their feet Tyson’s lead leg basically gives out but it doesn’t even phase him, though you can tell it hurts, he just goes on like nothing happened. Rafael connects with a flying knee and Tyson tries another takedown but the round ends.

RD 2: Griffin is still controlling the ring while they exchange a few punches. Rafael gets a hold of Tyson’s arm for a kimoura but gets out. Griffin lands a nice overhand right that shakes Anjos a little and continues to press the pace. Both fighters end the round well with a flurry of punches.

RD 3: Both men come out swinging for the fences. Each landing a few until Griffin gets a couple of overhand rights. Anjos lands a knee and loses another chance at the kimoura. Griffin finishes strong as he realizes he’s going to win.

Talk about a good fight with a lot of action, Tyson was pressing and controlling the ring the whole time without letting up once. Not to mention the nasty leg compression by Anjos on Griffin, it seemed to look pretty bad when it happened and into the second round, but by the third he looked good.

Official Decision: Tyson Griffin wins by unanimous decision.

Ryan Bader vs. Carmello Marrero

This was the most boring fight of the night, the only reason for this is that it was all Bader. Why I didn’t pick him to win is beyond me. He looked great and never did he let up.

The whole fight was basically Bader taking Marrero down and punishing him or Marrero taking Bader down and still getting pounded on. Either way Ryan controlled the fight all three rounds. Don’t get me wrong, Carmello had his chances. He got Ryan in a few guillotines and heel hooks but couldn’t seem to do anything with it.

Ryan “Darth” Bader impressed me and I’m sure everyone else within the UFC. After just winning The Ultimate Fighter it had to have been nice to get his first legit win off of the show. I honestly think that referee Dan Miragliotta could have put up a better fight.

Official Decision: Ryan “Darth” Bader wins by unanimous decision.

Main Event: Carlos Condit vs. Martin Kampmann

It’s too bad neither one of these guys have a belt because this one could have easily gone 5 rounds. This was a terrific fight that showcased both men’s capabilities, not only in toughness but in the technical aspect as well. The fight definitely lived up to the hype and was the perfect intro into the new season of The Ultimate Fighter.

RD 1: Kampmann gets the early takedown and immediately gets side control. Carlos gets caught in the guillotine but pulls out and stands back up. Condit then gets a takedown of his own and tries a heel hook but Martin nicely spins out and they stand back up. Condit delivers a nice knee to the head of Kampmann but gets taken down and is once again caught in a guillotine, but the round ends before anything further happens.

RD 2: The two exchange tastes of the others leather for a while until Marrero scores another takedown but nothing comes of it and they stand back up. Condit tries a flying knee and lands it followed by a takedown. Carlos gets Martin in another guillotine but finds his way free. Condit gets Kampmann’s back until the round ends.

RD 3: When the round starts Kampmann accidentally gets poked in the eye sending the fight into a short recess. As soon as it resumes Kampmann scores yet another takedown and shows off his ground and pound skills. Condit wiggles free and they stand up again. But Kampmann decides he’s had enough and gets his fifth takedown of the night. He gets side control and secures the fight.

This was a back and forth technical battle between two guys who knew what they were doing. Never for a second did the action take a break. I expected a great fight and a great fight I got. Never the less, some one had to win.

Official Decision: Martin Kampmann wins by split decision.
