In front of an impressive 7,500 spectators, the Cox Convention Center crowd went home happy with a card full of entertaining bouts. Accumulating $650,000 for the live event gate, the nineteenth edition of the successful Fight Night series proved valuable once again. Serving as a lead-in for the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter reality series, Fight Night 19 main carders, Nate Diaz, Nate Quarry, and Tim Credeur went home with $30,000 performance bonuses, as did preliminary card fighter, Jeremy Stephens. Stephens earned the “Knockout of the Night” honors after producing a fight-ending cut to his opponent, Justin Bucholtz. Diaz took home his bonus for “Submission of the Night” while Quarry and Credeur hammered each other for three rounds earning the “Fight of the Night” honors.
Melvin Guillard vs. Nate Diaz – Lightweight BoutMelvin Guillard looked refreshed and poised early in the bout, controlling Nate Diaz with his stand up game as well as mixing in an occasional takedown. “The Assassin”, who handed out more punishment in the second round, momentarily left his neck unprotected. Diaz, being the submission specialist that he is, grabbed his neck, forcing Guillard to tap out or pass out. Guillard chose the former, tapping out at the 2:13 mark in the second round. The loss drops Guillard’s record to 22-8-2 overall and 5-4 within the UFC. After getting another chance in the UFC and stringing together three straight victories, he becomes suspect to a submission for the seventh time in his career. Diaz, who happened to be on thin ice after losing two straight fights in the UFC, improves his overall record to 11-4 and a 6-2 mark inside the Octagon. Guillard should get one last crack at establishing himself as a lightweight while Diaz moves significantly upwards within the 155 division.
Gray Maynard vs. Roger Huerta – Lightweight BoutLightweight Gray Maynard took matters into his own hands, ruining Roger Huerta’s good-bye party via split decision (28-29, 30-27, 30-27). Maynard chose the steady route consistent in all aspects, whereas Huerta used the crowd to motivate him to an all-out performance peaking late in the fight. Despite his announcement to put his MMA career on hold, Huerta didn’t hold back going toe-to-toe with “The Bully”. After two evenly contested rounds, Maynard gained control in the final round with takedowns and ground control. Huerta was almost finished before the final bell when Maynard twisted and turned his arm into a pretzel. Huerta amazingly escaped the submission attempt but couldn’t escape the final decision. Fighting for the first time in over a year, Huerta dropped back-to-back fights for the first time in his career. His overall record falls to 20-3-1 and is 6-2 as a lightweight for the UFC. Maynard, who is quickly advancing toward a title opportunity, moves to 8-0 overall and 6-0 for the UFC.
Jake Ellenberger vs. Carlos Condit – Welterweight BoutJake Ellenberger, filling in for an injured Chris Lytle, showed that he is a game competitor by displaying little nervousness fighting inside the Octagon for the first time. However, Ellenberger may have used all his energy in the action-packed first round, where he consistently caught Condit with hard right hands. Condit may have lost the round but won the fight, outlasting Ellenberger via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28). The UFC rookie put Condit on the ground during the first minute with a right hand then almost finished the former WEC champion on numerous occasions with ground strikes. As the fight grew older into the second and third rounds, Condit took control in the grappling department, where he grinded out the decision victory. Condit, who suffered a loss in his UFC debut, won for the ninth time in his last ten fight overall. With his first Octagon celebration, Condit improves to 24-5 overall and 1-1 UFC. Ellenberger, who may have earned another look inside the Octagon with his impressive performance, snaps a four-fight winning streak falling to 21-5 overall.
Nate Quarry vs. Tim Credeur – Middleweight BoutThe first of the night’s televised bouts provided fireworks in a wildly entertaining bout. Nate “Rock” Quarry survived a tight submission attempt and a knockdown courtesy of Credeur’s right hand to come back and win via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-27, and 29-28). Credeur used his technical striking skills to take the early advantage in a competitive first round. Sporting a badly bruised right eye, Quarry rebounded in the second round using his striking to mount a comeback. Just like Credeur, Quarry just missed finishing “Crazy” in the final frame settling instead on the decision. Quarry improves his record to 12-3 which includes a 7-2 UFC record. He has now won two straight bouts and four of his last five to position himself in the mix of the 185 pound division. Tim Credeur dropped his first fight inside the Octagon after winning his three most recent bouts. He currently sports a 3-1 UFC record and has compiled a 12-3 overall mark.
