WEC 39 was televised from Corpus Christi, Texas and the fans there got a show. I was 2 for 3½ on my predictions. 3½ because at the time I didn’t know Ricardo Lamas was going to fight Bart Palaszewski so I gave myself a half to make me feel better. Overall the card seemed to go pretty quick, filled with both exciting fights and some… well... not so exciting ones.

Rob McCullough vs Marcus Hicks

The first televised fight of the night had just about as much excitement as the last time my grandmother spent the night - really boring, then thrilling when she forgot the biscuits were in the oven, and then boring again.

In the first round the fighters come out “Respecting the power” of one another as color commentator Jens Pulver puts it. Hicks tries a couple of over hand lefts that send the fight to the clinch a couple of times, only to have the referee break it up.

The second round is where it picks up. Hicks catches McCullough with a strait left, shaking him up a little. Marcus picks up on the opportunity and basically tackles Rob bringing the fight to the ground. Hicks immediately goes for the guillotine and sinks it in deep. McCullough weaves his way out of it and starts pounding on Hicks. The two get to the feet and McCullough now has the definite advantage as Hicks’ lack of conditioning becomes apparent. The round ends.

The third round is so boring that the referee actually threatens with a no contest. The two continue to size each other up until the end of the fight.

Official Decision: McCullough wins by majority decision

Jose Aldo vs Chris Mickle

O.K. so I’ll admit that when I wrote the preview for WEC 39, I was a little overzealous. I predicted that Mickle would win after 3 rounds of fighting, pulling off the upset. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

As the fight starts, Mickle wants to reach for Aldo’s legs, which would ultimately back fire on him. Aldo nails Mickle with a knee followed by a swift kick to the head. Chris falls back into the cage and Aldo continues to rain down his fists.

Mickle never really had a chance when the referee declares a TKO for Aldo

Official Decision: Jose Aldo TKOs Chris Mickle 1:39 in the first round

Bart Palaszewski vs Ricardo Lamas

A very entertaining fight occurred between these two. It lasted all 3 scheduled rounds and was probably the most entertaining fight of the night.

The usual sizing up of the opponent occurred when the fight starts. Lamas goes for (and gets) the take down. Palaszewski looks for the triangle choke but can’t get it. Lamas gets a few nice shots on Bart as they stand up. Lamas trips and goes in the clinch. The round ends with a flurry of punches from both fighters as an exciting round comes to a close.

The second round starts out with neither fighter being afraid of the other. Palaszewski avoids a few take down attempts but gets in the clinch. Lamas somehow gets a kick from behind Palaszewski’s back to his head, and continues to push the pace. Once again the round ends with both fighters giving it their all.

The third and final round the two men exchange punches until Lamas extends an accidental low blow onto Palaszewski bringing the fight to a quick intermission. When the fight resumes Lamas gets a nice take down. Bart looks for a couple of submissions but Ricardo is having nothing of it.

Official Decision: Ricardo Lamas wins by unanimous decision after 3 rounds

The Main Event: Mike Brown vs Leonard Garcia

Though the main event of the evening featured a fight for the Feather-Weight Title between Brown and Garcia, it seemed more like a clip on the Mike Brown highlight reel. Coming fresh off of his victory, Mike Brown isn’t stopping for any one.

Early in the first round, Brown jammed Garcia with an overhand right knocking him down. Brown just keeps on beating the crap out of Garcia and eventually gets his back. There’s a little more ground and pound followed by the arm triangle until Garcia is forced to tap.

The reigning WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Brown is now a true champion as he gets his first win with the belt.

Official Decision: Mike Brown wins by submission 1:57 in the first round
