WEC 46 took place on January 10, 2010 at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California, as WEC Lightweight Champion Jamie Varner was unsuccessful in his title defense after a year layoff against Benson Henderson in the main event. Also on the fight card was WEC fan-favorite Urijah Faber as he defeated Raphael Assuncao in a Featherweight battle. The WEC 46 results are listed below now that all of the fights are complete.

Deividas Taurosevicius vs. Mackens Semerzier

The WEC 46 televised card kicked off with Deividas Taurosevicius taking on the young gun Mackens Semerzier. The first ten minutes of the fight were a credit to the craftiness and experience of Deividas Taurosevicius. He controlled Mackens, punishing him from the top with elbows and dominating him in position. Deividas Taurosevicius also did a great job stifling any hopes Semerzier had of submissions. In the third round Semerzier did grab a fairly tight guillotine, which Deividas Taurosevicius again did a superb job escaping. The third round was a much better round for Mackens Semerzier. In the third Mackens attacked with submissions and strikes but in the end it was too little too late. Deividas Taurosevicius took the unanimous decision on the cards. Semerzier is derailed in his second appearance in the WEC after that great win over Fabiano. For Deividas Taurosevicius, this is his second win in the WEC in as many fights. Two wins over two tough guys in Javi Vasquez and Mackens Semerzier will surely move Deividas Taurosevicius up in the WEC featherweight ranks.

Mike Brown vs. Anthony Morrison

Former WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown returned at WEC 46 to fight hungry newcomer Anthony Morrison. There were no surprises here. Morrison has outstanding toughness and is a solid striker but his grappling game isn’t on par with Mike Brown. After some time on the feet, Brown got Morrison to the ground. Eventually after some scrambling Brown took Morrison’s back. Brown quickly sunk in the rear naked choke and the fight was over. This is a solid win over a good opponent for Mike Brown. Anthony Morrison is a good signing by the WEC. Morrison at this point should get a fight where he can showcase his skills against someone near his own skill level. Mike Brown perhaps will again soon be in the mix for Jose Aldo’s title.

Dave Jansen vs. Kamal Shalorus

In a lightweight battle at WEC 46, “ The Fugitive” Dave Jansen took on Kamal Shalorus. First, let me say I honestly did not know anything about Shalorus’ exceptional wrestling background. If I had known that it would have severely changed how I thought the fight would go. I knew much more about Jansen seeing him fight many times before his time in the WEC than I did Shalorus. The only Shalorus fight I had seen prior to this was his WEC debut. That said, Shalorus did an excellent job of doing what he had to do to win. Jansen mainly looks to get top position in his fights and isn’t a great striker. Against Shalorus the takedown was not there at all, Shalorus of course being a good wrestler in international competition. Jansen is not on his level in terms of wrestling. Even though Shalorus’ wrestling is very good, his striking is sloppy. This worked against Jansen because Jansen isn’t a great striker himself and was getting the fight taken to him. Jansen was not able to go into his comfort zone on top. The submissions of Jansen were never a factor either as he was shrugged off repeatedly by Shalorus. Kamal dominated the fight and took a well earned unanimous decision stuffing takedowns and tagging Jansen with his hands. It will be interesting to see who they give Kamal in his next fight and how he will deal with a more well rounded fighter.

Bryan Caraway vs. Mark Hominick

Mark Hominick and Bryan Caraway had the pleasure of being the only prelim bout shown on the Versus broadcast. Caraway fell victim to underrating Mark Hominick’s grappling game, something perhaps now fighters will stop doing. This is two straight submission wins for Mark Hominick over Savant Young and Bryan Caraway. Caraway scored a takedown early and looked to get to work on top of Hominick. Hominick stayed active from the bottom and was moving well. Hominick tried to sweep Caraway and took advantage of Caraway being out of position locking up a triangle armbar. Hominick will be a dangerous opponent for many fighters in the WEC on the ground or on the feet. Caraway is a solid grappler and submitting him is impressive.

Urijah Faber vs. Rapheal Assuncao

The crowd favorite Urijah Faber came out to a roar of cheers at the ARCO arena before he took on the Brazilian Rapheal Assuncao. This was the best performance from Urijah Faber in quite some time. Submitting a great grappler like Rapheal Assuncao is a statement that Faber is still a presence in the WEC featherweight division, even though he isn’t champ and may not be champ again. Faber was just too fast for Rapheal in the striking realm. Faber tagged Rapheal dropping him several times. Faber’s work from on top was excellent as well. Faber was striking and moving around effectively. In the third round Faber followed a stunned Assuncao to the mat and took Assuncao’s back when Assuncao tried to escape from the bottom. Faber sunk in the choke and the fight came to a halt. It was announced earlier that the winner of this fight would most likely get the next shot at Jose Aldo’s belt. Assuncao will look to get back to the W column in his next fight; he still is a talented fighter in the featherweight division. Awesome showing by Urijah Faber.

WEC Lightweight Championship Fight: Ben Henderson vs. Jamie Varner

The lightweight title was unified in the main event of WEC 46. The Champion Jamie Varner faced off with the interim champion Ben “Smooth” Henderson. Varner looked excellent in the first five minutes of this fight. His movement and quick hands told the story of the opening frame. Shades of the Cerrone-Henderson fight when Varner locked on a tight guillotine choke in the first that he couldn’t finish. Henderon’s takedown attempts were defended by Varner. Henderson threw a lot of body and head kicks in the fight, most of which were partially blocked. The second round was very close. The second frame was possibly a drawn round with neither guy landing any shots that warrant winning a round. Ben’s kicks vs. Varner’s punches. Round three was going much the same as round two until Varner shot in on Ben. Ben jumped on a guillotine and in a flash Varner was tapping. Ben Henderson is the undisputed WEC lightweight champion. Perhaps a rematch with Cowboy is in one or both men’s future. Varner will no doubt still be in the WEC lightweight title picture.
