WEC 49: Varner vs Shalorus took place on June 20, 2010 at the Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada as the first WEC event to ever take place in Canada, and was televised on Versus. The WEC 49 fight card is listed below with the WEC 49 results now that the fights are complete.

Eddie Wineland vs. Will Campuzano

The night’s first Versus televised bout was a good one. Twenty-five year-old Indiana-based Eddie Wineland rocked Mexican-born Will Campuzano and later put him away by 2 nd round (4:44) TKO. The victory for the former bantamweight champion helps in making his claim for another shot at reclaiming his title.

Wineland fought to an early advantage after stumbling and knocking Campuzano down during the 1 st round. Campuzano proved to be a worthy opponent however, as he fought back numerous times using his stingy low leg kicks to create space. It wasn’t until the end of the 2nd frame that the full time firefighter, Wineland, folded his Dallas-based opponent with the help of a well-placed shot to the liver. The body shot dropped Campuzano and he was followed to the floor by Wineland where he landed several unanswered bombs until the referee stepped in to stop it.

Wineland is now 17-6-1 overall and an impressive 4-1 in the WEC. He has won three straight, all of which have been impressive performances. Campuzano drops to 7-2 overall and is now 1-2 in the WEC. His future with the organization should be safe; however he will need an impressive victory in his next bout to climb back into the 135-pound contender picture.

Chris Horodecki vs. Danny Downes

Ontario, Canada native Chris “The Polish Hammer” Horodecki was dominant in his WEC 49 main card bout against Danny “Danny Boy” Downes utilizing both his stand-up and ground and pound strategies. “The Polish Hammer” ended up finishing Duke Roufas-trained Downes in the 3 rd round (1:09) by rear naked choke submission.

Horodecki picked Downes apart on his feet, especially in the 2nd round hitting everything that he threw. Knees, elbows, hooks, jabs, low kicks, body kicks, head kicks were all finding a home on Downes’ body. When Downes finally realized that he better go for broke in the final round, Horodecki converted a takedown and worked his ground game to perfection. After Downes gave his back, Horodecki took very little time to sink in a rear naked choke submission.

The victory is the first career for Horodecki while fighting inside the WEC octagon. He improves his overall record to 15-2 including a 1-1 record with WEC. Downes, who took the fight with about one-week notice, falls to 6-1 overall and 0-1 in the organization.

Josh Grispi vs. LC Davis

Josh Grispi answered some questions concerning his finishing power today after submitting the “tough as nails” LC Davis in a WEC 49 main card bout pitting two top featherweights. The ending came in the 1st round (2:33) by guillotine choke submission.

Davis came out as expected connecting with his powerful strikes. Grispi choose to answer with his own strikes, although he landed mostly kicks. When Davis decided to take the fight to the ground, he slammed Grispi on his back. As he converted the takedown, he left his head for the taking and Grispi knew what to do with it. Grispi held on and made it tighter as Davis tried to free himself. The referee checked on Davis and determined that he was unconscious and waved off the bout.

Grispi moves his record to 14-1 overall and an impressive 4-0 under the WEC banner. He should not be far behind new featherweight contender Manny Gamburyan for a future title opportunity. Davis falls to 16-3 overall and 3-1 in the WEC. He remains at the top of the division, and should be back in action before long.

Mark Hominick vs. Yves Jabouin

The evening’s co-main event stole the show and was definitely the most action-packed bout of the night. In what was unofficially billed as the Canadian Featherweight Championship, Ontario-native, Mark Hominick used his powerful ground strikes to finish Montreal-based Yves Jabouin in the 2nd round (3:21) via TKO.

It was Jabouin that came out with the more impressive game plan, hitting with many more strikes than Hominick. Jabouin mixed it up between kicks and punches, and then later in the 2nd round, even hit with some spinning elbows as well. Hominick felt the strikes, however didn’t allow it to faze him as he was consistently picking his spots for his power punches. As Jabouin continued to hit with his flashy strikes, Hominick stayed in the pocket and leveled Haiti-born Jabouin with a left hook. The left connected, however Jabouin came back and landed a right of his own that put Hominick on his back. Working from Hominick’s guard, he was reversed as Hominick ended up in a mount position. From there, Hominick wailed down with some powerful strikes, and when Jabouin couldn’t fight back, the referee stepped in and waved it off.

Hominick improves to 18-8 overall and 2-2 within the WEC. Hominick has now won three consecutive including both of his fights since he returned to the organization after a brief Affliction stint. Jabouin falls to 14-6 overall and is 0-2 in the WEC, although both of his WEC bouts have been memorable. He may earn a third bout in the organization despite not winning either of his previous two.

Jaime Varner vs. Kamal Shalorus

The WEC 49 main event was supposed to be a striking battle between a former champ, Jaime Varner, and a top lightweight contender, Kamal Shalorus. It turned into one of the most confusing scoring decisions in the promotion’s history. Despite three low blows by Shalorus and a point deduction, the judge’s decision came to a draw with scores of 29-27 in favor of Shalorus, 29-27 Varner, and a 28-28 draw.

The first round was fairly even, however it looked as if Varner took the round after landing a hard straight right hand that had Shalorus on his heels. He did recover late in the 1st landing a nice body kick and two right hands as the round ended. The 2nd round was where the problems occurred for Shalorus. He first grazed Varner with a low kick that halted the action for a moment, a little over a minute later; he nailed him again that caused Varner to go to his knees. The second groin shot earned a deduction by referee Josh Rosenthal. With the deduction, Varner was thought to have had the advantage, especially after outfighting him despite the kicks. In the 3rd, Shalorus worked the fight to the ground where he worked his ground and pound and earned a decisive advantage. He didn’t finish without hitting Varner one more time with a low kick that dropped Varner to the ground where he laid for several moments. Referee Josh Rosenthal decided not to take a point from Shalorus for his third infraction which proved to be the final factor for the draw decision.

Varner’s record is now 16-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the WEC. He may not get the chance to avenge his loss to Benson Henderson for the lightweight belt. If that is the case, Shalorus will not get that opportunity either. He remains undefeated at 6-0-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the WEC, but will need another decisive victory to get that lost opportunity.
